YouTube censors ‘racist donor’ Planned Parenthood videos

Los Angeles, Sep 4, 2008 / 04:21 am (CNA).- The internet video sharing site YouTube has removed four well-viewed videos which criticize Planned Parenthood, including some featuring Planned Parenthood fundraisers agreeing to process a donation from a donor pretending to have racist motives. The move has prompted Live Action, the pro-life student organization which produced the videos, to charge YouTube with censorship.

The Live Action videos, some of which were the focus of national media attention in the past year, were removed over the past two weeks on the grounds they contain unspecified “inappropriate content.”

"It is discriminatory for YouTube to selectively censor material that clearly does not contain inappropriate content," stated Live Action President Lila Rose in a press release. "We will continue to apply pressure on YouTube until it restores the videos."

Representatives for a gallery in Gateshead appeared in court yesterday charged with outraging public decency, after featuring a statue of Jesus with an erection.

The artwork was part of the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art's September 2007-January 2008 exhibition Gone, Yet Still, by the controversial Chinese artist Terence Koh, which featured dozens of plaster figures including Mickey Mouse and ET - all in some state of arousal.

Britian Bank Changes "pants" password

Here’s some food for thought if you think your online banking password is securely hidden from curious eyes at the bank.

A British banking customer, Steve Jetley, phoned up his bank (Lloyds TSB Bank) and discovered that his password “Lloyds is pants” had been changed to “no it’s not” by a bank employee. He had made this password after having an argument with the bank over insurance.

He was then told he was banned from changing it back to “Lloyds is pants” or to another password “Barclays is better” (Barclays is a rival bank). He even tried the word “censorship” but the bank employee refused that one too on the grounds it was too long.

Lloyds claims the employee has now been fired and Mr Jetley has received a full apology. But this incident makes you wonder how many bank employees actually have full unrestricted access to your online banking password.

NBC Refutes Censorship in Coverage of Olympic Gay Diver Matthew Mitcham

NBC is denying they intentionally used censorship in the network's coverage of Olympic gold medalist Matthew Mitcham. In a shocking upset, the openly gay diver took home a gold medal in the 10-meter platform event at the Beijing Olympics, beating out the Chinese favorites. Despite intensive coverage of other gold medalist’s personal lives during the Games, NBC failed to mention Mitcham was gay, or show footage of the diver’s partner cheering him on and congratulating him after the win.

clipper's remarks: I'm very surprised at this action by Apple. I know they want to have approval over what gets added to it's App Store, but banning content because they feel it's too obscene or graphic is absolutely censorship.

A company like Apple that prides itself on "thinking different" should absolutely not be deciding what content is and is not appropriate for its users.

I can't stand it when corporate America decides it's in the best position to determine what is and is not appropriate for people.

If Apple is worried about kids accessing this content, what happened to the role of the parent? It should be a parent's job to determine what content their children access. Apple should not feel it needs to do this.

I'm a HUGE Apple fan and am a big proponent and user of its products. However, this action will seriously lead me to reconsider my perspective and stop using and promoting Apple products.

But Murderdrome has now joined the pantheon of suppressed fiction as the first digital book banished from Apple’s App Store by censors in Cupertino.

News that the work had been rejected by Apple was spread Tuesday evening by its publisher, Infurious Comics, which posted the entire first episode for free, along with a plea for support.

“PLEASE leave a comment,” wrote the strip’s creator, Paul Jason Holden. “We’ll forward ALL of these to Apple, so that we can ensure that not only Murderdrome, but that ANY comic submitted to Apple doesn’t fall foul of the same censorship.” (link)

Applications must not contain any obscene, pornographic, offensive or defamatory content or materials of any kind (text, graphics, images, photographs, etc.), or other content or materials that in Apple’s reasonable judgement may be found objectionable by iPhone or iPod touch users.

Censored: imam of Dibley is banned from ITV

Have you heard the one about the Islamic comedy sketch that ITV ordered its latest star to remove? Katy Brand was the victim of humourless lawyers who instructed her to delete a harmless-sounding spoof called The Iman of Dibley.

“It was not intended to be offensive,” says the comedian, whose Katy Brand’s Big Ass Show returns on ITV2. “A new iman arrives in a sleepy parish and the comedy arrives from the misunderstandings that causes. But the lawyers said it might be culturally insensitive.”

It’s no laughing matter, argues Brand, 29, an Oxford theology graduate. “The vast majority of Muslims are able to have a laugh at themselves just like everyone else.

Why should they be excluded from comedy? It’s funny that ITV had no problem with a new sketch about a pregnant Jesus’s girlfriend who has to deal with dating the Son of God.”

Brand is particularly peeved to lose her iman of Dibley. “I really liked the outfit.”

NEW YORK — A racy, historical novel based on the Prophet Muhammad's child bride A'isha was supposed to hit book stores in the U.S. Tuesday.

But in a rare case of self-censorship to preempt possible violent reaction by Muslims, one of the world's largest publishing houses pulled the plug on the book just before its release date.

Sherry Jones, author of The Jewel of Medina, said she received word from Random House Inc. that the book's release would be "postponed indefinitely." The decision came after copies of her book were sent to stores, her book tour was scheduled and her work of fiction was accepted by the Book of the Month Club (it was scheduled to be in the August selection).

"My book is a respectful portrayal of Islam, of A'isha, of Muhammad. And anyone who reads it with [an] open mind will come away with an understanding of Islam as a peaceful religion," said the American author.
