Defence officials said Sabi the dog was recovered by a US soldier at an isolated patrol base.

The dog returned to a celebrity welcome from visiting Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and US commander Gen Stanley McChrystal.

Sabi is being tested for disease before a possible return to Australia.

The black labrador bitch was with a joint Australian-Afghan patrol that was ambushed in Uruzgan province in September 2008.

Nine Australian soldiers, including Sabi's trainer, were wounded in the exchange.

After the battle there was no sign of the dog, and months of searching failed to find her. Sabi was officially declared Missing In Action.

it would probably never be known exactly what had happened to Sabi in the 14 months she was missing, but the fact that she was in good condition indicated she had been cared for by someone.

And despite being MIA for more than a year, she showed through a simple game of "catch" with a tennis ball that she hadn't forgotten her training.

Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler joined Joe Perry on stage in New York to set the record straight about the future of the feuding rock group.

"New York, I want you to know I'm not leaving Aerosmith," Tyler told fans in a surprise appearance on Tuesday night (US time) at a concert by Perry's solo side project.

Tyler, 61 and Perry - his songwriting partner of 40 years - then launched into a version of Walk This Way, music website NME.com reports.

The future of the band has been in doubt since a North American tour was cut short in August when Tyler fell off stage.

Relations between Perry and Tyler deteriorated to an all-time low this week with bitter Twitter messages and cryptic asides about whether Tyler is still with the band.

Tyler told celebrity website TMZ.com after Tuesday's appearance that: "There is absolutely no validity to the rumour that Aerosmith is breaking up."

Perry said of Tyler's appearance at his concert. "He just couldn't stay away."
