Wind Energy Storage Gets Boost

Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) pumps air underground in places like depleted natural gas wells or salt caverns. The pressured air is then released later to drive a turbine to generate electricity. The system is capable of storing energy for several hours or even days, allowing utilities to deliver electricity during peak hours, when the demand and price for electricity is at its highest.

"It may be typical of the pro-Obama Dungeons & Dragons crowd to disparage a fellow countryman's memory of war from the comfort of mom's basement," said McCain aide Michael Goldfarb, in a posting to the campaign website. Barack Obama unveiled another shift in his energy policy Monday, reversing his opposition to tapping the nation’s strategic petroleum reserve as a means of lowering gasoline prices.

During a speech in Lansing, Mich., Obama said he’d like to release up to 10 percent of the 700 million barrels of oil kept in salt caverns in Texas and Louisiana. Obama also called for a revival of the windfall profits tax on oil companies.

“We meet at a moment when this country is facing a set of challenges greater than any that we have seen in generations. … And for too long, our leaders in Washington have been unable or unwilling to do anything about it,” Obama said.

Among the short-term parts of his plan, Obama said: “We should sell 70 million barrels of oil from our Strategic Petroleum Reserve for less expensive crude, which in the past has lowered gas prices within two weeks.”

The victims of human sacrifice by Mexico's ancient Mayans, who threw children into water-filled caverns, were likely boys and young men not virgin girls as previously believed, archeologists said on Tuesday

Maya priests in the city of Chichen Itza in the Yucatan peninsula sacrificed children to petition the gods for rain and fertile fields by throwing them into sacred sinkhole caves, known as "cenotes."

Archeologist Guillermo de Anda from the University of Yucatan pieced together the bones of 127 bodies discovered at the bottom of one of Chichen Itza's sacred caves and found over 80 percent were likely boys between the ages of 3 and 11

The other 20 percent were mostly adult men said de Anda, who scuba dives to uncover Mayan jewels and bones

He said children were often thrown alive to their watery graves to please the Mayan rain god Chaac. Some of the children were ritually skinned or dismembered before being offered to the gods, he said

A massive switch from coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear power plants to solar power plants could supply 69 percent of the U.S.’s electricity and 35 percent of its total energy by 2050.
A vast area of photovoltaic cells would have to be erected in the Southwest. Excess daytime energy would be stored as compressed air in underground caverns to be tapped during nighttime hours.
Large solar concentrator power plants would be built as well.
A new direct-current power transmission backbone would deliver solar electricity across the country.
But $420 billion in subsidies from 2011 to 2050 would be required to fund the infrastructure and make it cost-competitive.

PARIS, Jan. 1 The French government is taking steps to preserve the world's most celebrated prehistoric cave paintings from a second fungal invasion in seven years.

Experts are treating the caverns at Lascaux, nicknamed the Sistine Chapel of pre-history, with a fungicide to try to stop the spread of gray and black mold splotches. After the last treatment is applied on Jan. 8, the caves will be closed to nonessential visitors for three months, The Independent reported Tuesday.

No public visits to Lascaux have been allowed since 1963, the newspaper reported.

Some scientists believe the introduction of an air conditioning system may be partially to blame for the fungal invasions.

Kapadokya, Turkey is home to hundreds of linked rooms that, together, form an ancient system of underground cities over 2,500 years old. Areas are separated by narrow corridors lit once lit by oil lamps as well as other architectural devices for maximizing the defensibility of the spaces. Settlement initially started on the surface, then slowly moved underground over time.

Pembrokeshire, Wales is home to a family with a house straight out of The Hobbit. This amazing architectural wonder is created virtually completely from the natural materials found around the residence. The walls are made out of stone and mud and water enters the house by gravity from a nearby spring. Non-natural materials, such as windows and plumbing, were recovered from trash.

Divers Break Record for Longest Cave Passage

Jarrod Jablonski and Casey McKinlay dropped into a small cave entrance called Turner Sink on the afternoon of December 15 and dove to a depth of some 300 feet (91 meters).

They then swam through 7 miles (11.25 kilometers) of underground freshwater cave

It took the pair over 6 hours to complete the two-entrance cave traverse, and more than 14 more to gradually decompress before surfacing.

The Leon Sinks cave system—which divers with the project have explored for nearly 20 years—is the longest underwater explored cave in the United States and fourth longest in the world.

The record dive took the duo through passages as tight as ten feet by ten feet (three meters by three meters), and into soaring caverns big enough to accommodate office buildings.

During the dive's second half, visibility dropped from 50 feet

to about 5 feet

Next the team hopes to explore the cave system south, to its juncture with the Gulf of Mexico—some 8.5 miles (13.7 kilometers) as the crow flies.

Alaskan Ship-Wreck Found

A private dive team has discovered the wreckage of an American ship that sank off the south-central Alaska coast 139 years ago.

The shipwreck is the oldest American wreck ever found in Alaska.

"It's a very significant find because it's right after the purchase, during the transition from Russian to American authority,"

An array of objects, from guns, cannons, shoes and plates, are hidden beneath the broad leaves of giant kelp beds or concealed in caverns and crevices among massive boulders, Lloyd said.

Big finds include the two anchors, sections of hull and heavy bronze rudder hinges weighing about 100 lbs.

The Torrent is now being considered for listing in the National Registry of Historic Places.
