Priest abuse survivor groups are criticizing the Roman Catholic Church's decision to have Pope Benedict XVI skip a visit to Boston next year, saying the pontiff is snubbing the city because of its history as a center of priest sex abuse scandals

The trip will include stops at the White House, the United Nations and the site of the World Trade Center tragedy. It will include two stadium open-air Masses.

But the 80-year-old church leader announced he will not be stopping in Boston, where details of the priest sex abuse scandal first emerged in 2001

Benedict is missing a "golden opportunity" to confront the crisis head-on, Time reported, saying the pope was trying to avoid protests in Boston

One activist said the pope's visit to New York was instead a show of papal support for that city's Cardinal Edward Egan, who has refused to release documents about priests, the Web site reported

The seven-month investigation found 2,570 educators whose teaching credentials were revoked, denied, voluntarily surrendered or limited from 2001 through 2005 following allegations of sexual misconduct.

Young people were the victims in at least 1,801 of the cases, and more than 80 percent of those were students. More than half the educators who were punished by their states also were convicted of crimes related to the misconduct.

The findings draw obvious comparisons to sex abuse scandals in other institutions, among them the Roman Catholic Church. A review by America's Catholic bishops found that about 4,400 of 110,000 priests were accused of molesting minors from 1950 through 2002.

An Italian politician has sparked a furore by urging state broadcaster Rai to block the transmission of a controversial BBC documentary.

The programme, aired in the UK in October, investigates the sexual abuse of children in the Catholic Church.

The Panorama programme, Sex Crimes and the Vatican, has been Google Italia's most popular online video choice since a version with translated subtitles was put online.

The investigation examines a secret document which sets out a procedure for dealing with child sex abuse scandals within the Catholic Church.

VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI said Saturday that clerical sex abuses were "egregious crimes" that had damaged the standing of the Catholic Church and its clergy, in his first explicit remarks on the subject since becoming pontiff.

Speaking to a group of bishops from Ireland _ an overwhelmingly Roman Catholic country where all but one seminary has closed following repeated scandals _ Benedict said it was urgent "to rebuild confidence and trust."

"The wounds caused by such acts run deep," Benedict said.

Benedict mentioned only the crisis in Ireland, but his comments were likely to resonate in other nations where the church has been plagued by sex abuse scandals, such as the United States.

The pope said however that "the fine work and selfless dedication of the great majority of priests and religious in Ireland should not be obscured by the transgressions of some of their brethren."

He added, "I am certain that the people understand this, and continue to regard their clergy with affection and esteem."

Benedict has rarely spoken openly about sex abuse cases.

In the United States, sex abuse allegations have shaken the church, with 783 new credible claims last year, most of which date back decades, and costs of nearly $1.5 billion since 1950, according to figures compiled from various studies by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

The total number of accusations against Catholic clergy in the United States now stands at more than 12,000 since 1950.

The Catholic Church has been hit by abuse scandals worldwide

More than 100 Catholic priests in the Dublin region of Ireland are suspected of having abused children in the last 66 years, according to a new report.

The Archdiocese of Dublin's report said at least 350 children may have been abused in the region since 1940.

More than 3% of some 2,800 priests to have worked in the archdiocese are suspected of abuse - the biggest such figure revealed so far in Ireland.

A series of sex-abuse scandals have dented the Irish Catholic Church's reputation since 1994.

So far, 32 priests in the archdiocese have been sued for damages by 105 victims, according to the report.

Late last year an investigation in a smaller diocese, in County Wexford, uncovered more than 100 allegations of abuse against 21 priests.
