Being fat and lazy cat, Garfield is also portrayed as cynical, sarcastic, sadistic and pessimistic. He loves to destroy stuff, to maul the mailman and to torment his "colleague" pet Odie. He has comments sharp as a knife, usually on Jon being unable to find a date. But he has also his soft side, which is reserved for food, sleep and his teddy bear.

New York Post embroiled in racism row

The New York Post is facing allegations of racism and sexism in a lawsuit brought by a disgruntled former employee

Sandra Guzman was sacked by the newspaper at the end of September and believes she was targeted because she had spoken out about discrimination at the paper, and because she is black and female

In documents filed in the District Court in New York, Ms Guzman says there is a culture of discrimination at The Post that goes all the way to the top

Ms Guzman relates a series of alleged incidents involving executives from the newspaper making sexist, offensive and racist remarks

"Virtually all the executives, managing directors and news reporters are white males who wield enormous power and influence at the company,"

The paper's editor, Australian Col Allan, earned the nickname Col Pot for his take-no-prisoners approach to editing Sydney's Daily Telegraph.

Really? Aren’t the people who actually ever watched the Yogi Bear cartoons like 80 or dead? I don’t recall Yogi Bear cartoons ever really being a staple when I was a kid in the 80s. I think you could maybe find it randomly, but no one watched it. Nor have they since.

The most unusual included Aeroplane Ears, Ting Ching, Stolen, Fugly, Jesus, Rangatira Skid, Fish, Slimey, Tomato, Toaster, Communion, Botox, Coast Guard, Death, Samfoomfa, Awesum, Piddles, Griffy Griff Griff, Poopoo, Trevor the Wolf and X.

Some owners went for multiple moniker, such as Alfred Pupsicle Trounson Clarke, Hippo Musafa Nambala, Danger High Voltage and Berlios Rotunda Fancy Pup.

Alcohol was the inspiration for many names, with Tequila, Budweiser, Stella, Bollinger, Moet, Merlot, Cristal, Bourbon, Clicquot, Guiness, Whiskey, Speights and Tui registered around the North Island. Many dogs shared their names with international sports stars and celebrities - Brad Pitt, Robbie Williams, Bon Jovi, Zsa Zsa, Joe Cocker, Tua, Tyson, Beckham, Sonny Bill and Schumacher to name a few.

Names from movies, TV shows, books and cartoons included Mr Darcy, Fox Mulder, Dangermouse, Darth Vader, Batman, Frodo, Scooby, Snoopy, Lassie, Munter, McDreamy and Dracula.

Schoolboy's TV aerial disrupted airport

Government officials raided the home of a 12-year-old schoolboy - because his TV aerial was interfering with planes landing at Luton Airport.

Nickie Chamberlain had used the booster device for two years to watch cartoons, music channels and Big Brother on his 14-inch television, reports the Daily Telegraph.

But an Ofcom official turned up at his home in Linslade, Beds, and confiscated the £15 aerial which he said was affecting planes landing at the airport.

According to Ofcom, pilots coming into land at the airport had lost contact with the control tower because the faulty aerial was transmitting on the same frequency as the cockpit radios.

His father, DHL operations manager Dave Chamberlain, 46, said he could not believe a tiny aerial could affect aeroplanes flying over his house.

He said: "The engineer was waiting outside the house when I came home from work and told me pilots had been complaining and they had traced the signal to our house.

I am a person who saw everything – the evolution of cartoons and the coming of Anime in the world of animation. From Popeye, Scooby Doo, Tom and Jerry down to The Simpsons, I have seen it all. Gone where the old times I must say.

When Anime comes and the Japanese invade my T.V. screens with their creative works portrayed on those action-filled animation series, now we are talking! There is an instant shift from staying for hours watching The Simpsons over and over again to buying tons and tons of Anime DVDs which made me an insomniac. No wonder I am starting to have big puffy eyes with dark circles. I look like a zombie now!

Hundreds of animated films on NFB’s new iPhone app

iTunes approved the new NFB iPhone app yesterday. The app lets you watch hundreds of animated films and documentaries from NFB.ca, streaming, on your iPhone or iPod touch.

We also built in a “Watch Later” feature that lets you load films on your iPhone for up to 24 hours so you can watch them offline. Hopefully that will come in handy on subways and planes and other WiFi deserts.

IPI-CILS ‘War on Words’ Conference on Terrorism, Media and the Law Ends with Discussion on Draft Declaration of Principles

On the second and final day of the IPI-CILS conference "The War on Words" participants discussed on Tuesday the Danish cartoon controversy and the effect of laws criminalising blasphemy.

A second session discussed a draft declaration on terrorism, media and the law to be finalized in the coming weeks.

Endy Bayuni, editor-in-chief of The Jakarta Post in Indonesia, a country which has witnessed inter-religious tensions in recent years, said it was important on the one hand to promote free speech, while on the other not giving too much space to radical groups which hijack the news and use publicity to achieve their goals.

Although Bayuni argued that the cartoons were in "bad taste," he defended the right of journalists to "make mistakes" without fear of criminal punishment.

But anyone tempted by this theory has to admit just how wrong it feels, how poorly it fits with most of our experience.
