Farewell Opus; Hello Pete, The Perfectly Practical Pig

All Things Considered, October 6, 2008 · This just in: The bowtie-wearing, tuba-playing, onetime vice presidential candidate on the National Radical Meadow Party ticket is headed for that great comic strip in the sky; cartoonist Berkeley Breathed announced today that he is giving up his Sunday comic strip Opus to focus on children's books instead.

That announcement signals the end of Opus, the charming penguin who has entertained comics readers for nearly 30 years, starting with Bloom County. Though Breathed has retired the character before, this time, he says, he means it.

"I'll be leaving Opus in a way that it should be very clear that this time there's no going back home," says Breathed.

Breathed says that he's not usually sentimental about his characters. Still, he found himself "unrealistically emotional" about drawing the final strip, taking pains to make sure the penguin's last pose was perfect.

Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Berkeley Breathed is retiring, leaving a hole in the Sunday funnies and the hearts of "Opus" fans.

The last strip featuring the beloved, large-beaked penguin will run in about 200 newspapers nationwide November 2. Breathed announced Monday he's calling it quits after a comics career that has spanned nearly 30 years.

Amy Lago, comics editor of The Washington Post Writers Group, said Breathed will pursue other interests, such as writing books and screenplays.

The writers group unveiled his "Bloom County" strip in 1980; he went on to win the Pulitzer for editorial cartooning in 1987. He ended that strip in 1989 and the same year began the Sunday-only strip "Outland," which he quit in 1995. In 2003, he launched "Opus."

This Sunday's strip will include a contest in which Breathed asks readers to guess the penguin's fate. Details on how to participate are not being released ahead of time. The answer will appear online after the last "Opus" runs next month,

#35. Re-enter my world. Back in Joburg all anyone can talk about is Zapiro’s cartoon that appeared in the Sunday Times. The image of ANC president Jacob Zuma unbuckling his pants while members of the alliance — the ANC Youth League, SA Communist Party and labour federation COSATU — hold down the figure of Justice and the ANC says “Go for it, Boss” is in a word, shocking!

Shocking in that it delivers such a powerful message about complicity, about corruption, the “rape” of justice and the pursuit of power for the sake of power. As Zapiro said in an interview with The Times yesterday the cartoon is about “the most powerful man in the country” … “violating the justice system that people fought and died for” while the alliance weighs in with their support.

As violence continues between Palestinian groups Fatah and Hamas, Artsworld meets a Gazan cartoonist trying to make a difference through her drawings.

One of the most recognisable symbols of Palestinian society is Handala, a ragged ten-year-old Palestinian refugee who is always viewed from behind and always observing the world.

Handala is a cartoon and his creator, Naji al Ali, was assassinated in London in 1987.

Known for his political criticism of both Israel and Arab regimes al Ali’s body was riddled with bullets and his killer has yet to be found.

Joha's work is a fusion of art politics and journalism and her cartoons reflect the harsh realities of refugee life and the Palestinian struggle. They are realities she knows all too well.

"I was born in the city of Gaza in 1972, but I am part of a family of refugees from al Muharaka, one of Palestinian villages that was attacked by the invading Zionists in 1948," she says.

A famous perceptual illusion in which the brain switches between seeing a young girl and an old woman (or "wife" and "mother in law"). An anonymous German postcard from 1888 (left figure) depicts the image in its earliest known form, and a rendition on an advertisement for the Anchor Buggy Company from 1890 (center figure) provides another early example (IllusionWorks). For many years, the creator of this figure was thought to be British cartoonist W. E. Hill, who published it in 1915 in Puck humor magazine, an American magazine inspired by the British magazine Punch. (right figure).
