Lexus' self-parking feature is optional on the LS sedan. Line up the superimposed square in the backup camera with your intended parking spot, gently let off the brakes and the LS will slowly steer around adjacent cars as it backs into the spot. You have to press the brakes to bring the car to a stop at the end. We didn't know Big Brother had a valet job, either.

But apparently this type of behavior—something I've dubbed "not being a three year-old toddler"—is beyond the capability of humanity. We'd prefer to suffer enormously instead.

I first learned about the Great Depression when I was ten or so. And I remember thinking: I don't get it. I was mystified by the way this could have happened—everyone suddenly becoming much poorer for ten years—when nothing whatsoever had changed in physical reality.

I understand the process of the Great Depression now. But it's certainly an education to watch a gigantic financial panic in real time. I look outside, and the sun is shining. The world still has all the same people and buildings and cars and factories—i.e., it's not like we've just suffered from a virulent plague or half the planet's been destroyed by bombs. And yet we really may all become much poorer for the next ten years.

It's completely insane. And it could be avoided if we would all just calm down and look at reality, which is not that scary. So we don't have $8 trillion of imaginary wealth we thought we did. Who cares?

World's first flying car, to ship late next year

Flying cars are all hat, no cattle. But wait. What's this? A flying car that will actually exist, roll on real streets and highways and then take off into the wild blue? You betcha. Pony up your $194,000, and by the end of next year you'll be cruising skyward in a 1300-pound Terrafugia Transition and then parking it in your garage when you're done. It's more like a drivable airplane, but we'd rather call it a flying car.

Let's do a walkaround. Out back is a push prop, and the front canard does double duty as a wing and bumper. Its gas engine will push it over a range of 460 miles through the air. Look at the cool way the wings fold up into a compact package, completing its metamorphosis from airworthy flying machine to street-legal road rocket.

The first flying prototype is scheduled to take off next month. Nice. Covert that prop to a jet engine and give it vertical takeoff capabilities, and we'll be living in the future.

Le constructeur automobile suédois Volvo Cars, filiale du géant américain Ford, a annoncé aujourd'hui qu'il allait supprimer plus de 3.000 emplois supplémentaires en Suède et dans le monde.

Quelque 2.700 emplois vont être supprimés en Suède et 700 à l'étranger, tandis que 700 contrats de consultants seront résiliés, de façon à "rédondre à la détérioration rapide du marché mondial de l'automobile", a précisé le groupe dans un communiqué.

Ces réductions s'ajoutent aux 2.900 suppressions d'emploi déjà annoncées par Volvo Cars cette année.

Brake lines cut, cars damaged at homes

Toronto police patrolled a midtown area overnight, after vandals cut brake lines on at least 10 cars parked at homes with Liberal election signs on their lawns.

"There are two child seats in the back of my car," said Andrew Lane, chief financial officer for Bennett's campaign. "To cut the brake line on a car like that is just evil. Awful."

Added Lane, whose children are 6 months and 22 months: "You have to crawl under someone's car and cut the brake line, knowing that it could kill someone, or their whole family."

He, too, has two young children and shudders to think what might have happened if he had driven the car with a cut brake line.

Said Steele: "Only a very small number of people took their signs down. It speaks to the resilience of the people of this riding... We're here to stay."

Sick of traffic jams? wish there was an easier way to get to work? Well now you can buy a flying car on eBay with a starting bid of $20,000.

Moller International, makes of flying cars, has the M200X prototype vehicle shown in the video above up for sale. This particular car was the first ever working model, and Moller is pitching it as a collectors item that will increase with value over time.

There is one small catch though, and it’s not listed in the auction, but answered in the questions from eBay members section: it isn’t safe to fly: “We do not recommend flying the M200X in its current configuration. The fans are currently fitted with aluminum blades with a known failure mode.”

The $700 billion bailout passed by US lawmakers on Friday may amount to indirect aid to America's ailing automobile industry, Berlin fears. Even worse, Germans are furious over a $25 billion handout to carmakers made earlier last week.

The German automobile industry is unhappy. Twice in the last week, the United States government has reached deep into the American pocketbook in an attempt to shore up the country's economy. And both times, struggling US carmakers have been the beneficiaries. According to information obtained by SPIEGEL, the government in Berlin is concerned that fair competition in the automobile industry may have been compromised.

Scientists Reach Hydrogen Storage Milestone

Hydrogen cars may be feasible sooner than previously thought thanks to the efforts of a research team at the University of Crete in Greece. The scientists have developed a hydrogen storage model that can store up to 41 grams of hydrogen per liter— almost matching the US Department of Energy’s target of 45 grams per liter.

The storage structure consists of graphene sheets that are only one atom thick connected by vertical columns of carbon nanotubes. Hydrogen is stored in the gaps between the nanotubes and the graphene sheets. The researchers also added lithium ions to the structure for increased storage capacity.

In the past, one of the major drawbacks in using hydrogen for transportation purposes has been a lack of storage ability. This new discovery comes close to removing that hurdle. But since most hydrogen is still produced using fossil fuels, we still have a ways to go before hydrogen-powered cars are ready for commercial use.

Norway cops chase speeding 10-year-old

With police cars wailing behind him, a 10-year-old boy sped and swerved at up to 90km/h along a Norwegian highway on Friday morning before he was finally forced to a halt, police said.

"A 10-year-old boy drove a car for about 20km along the highway at up to 90km/h," Birgit Monsaas, the duty officer at the Soer-Troendelag regional police force in central Norway, said.

"We had to put in patrol cars in front and in back of him, but he didn't want to stop. In the end we had to force him off the road," she said.

Miraculously no one was injured as the boy, hardly tall enough to peak over the steering wheel, zig-zagged and swerved uncontrollably along the busy highway towards the town of Trondheim, several times veering over into the opposite lane, according to media reports.

"The car he was driving was slightly damaged though," Monsaas said.

Police would not comment on how the boy had gained access to the car.
