The entire cargo of radioactive sand, obtained by Iran from China (the latter buys desperately needed oil from the former) and sealed in containers which, when the charges on the ship are set off after the crew took to the boats, will be blasted high into the air where prevailing winds will push the highly dangerous and radioactive cloud ashore.

Tags: hoshienu

<clipSource>http://patdollard.com/2008/10/hijacked-iranian-ship-was-a-dirty-bomb-meant-for-israel-on-yom-kippur/</clipSource>

Cristinanismo

clipped by: clot21

Clip Source: www.artehistoria.jcyl.es

Designed to rapidly hoist 40-foot-long containers from super-sized cargo ships, they had to be transported beneath the Oakland Bridge to reach their final destination, the Port of Oakland. The tidal range of San Francisco Bay when these cranes were transported was 4.1 feet and the bridge had a motion of approximately 6 inches. With light chop on the bay and winds blowing at around 10 mph, there was little room for error. With detailed knowledge of the tidal cycle and skillful piloting of the vessel, the cranes cleared the bottom of the bridge by about 6 feet.

<clipSource>http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/education/kits/tides/media/supp_tide09a.html</clipSource>

Modern Pirates

clipped by: balthazarus
clipper's remarks: looking at the picture it seems like sizes are not everything...

Clip Source: www.latimes.com

Another ship seized as pirates issue threat

In this picture released by U.S. Navy September 28, Somali pirates in small boats are seen alongside the hijacked "Faina." The Navy's Military Sealift Command (MSC) has chartered the "kite-assisted", fuel-saving 400 foot, MV Beluga to deliver Air Force and Army cargo to from Europe to the US.

The MV Beluga uses a paraglider-shaped, SkySails-System, which supplements its conventional, internal combustion engines. The sail is basically a huge, computer-controlled kite that soars 100 to 300 yards into the air, using the wind to tow the ship at the end of a long tear-proof, synthetic rope.

Tags: cargo, kite, shipping, skysails, cargos sip, us military

<clipSource>http://news.cnet.com/8601-13639_3-10063876.html?communityId=2036&targetCommunityId=2036&blogId=42#5018078</clipSource>

Pirates

clipped by: The advantage of this is that you can put both feet on the ground while in the saddle. Like I said, forget everything you know about bikes.
Forget everything I know about bikes, okay. But pedaling or pumping with one's knees bent, regardless of what kind of vehicle or machine is being pedaled or pumped, is tiring and less efficient than having one's legs more fully extended. Hm.

Clip Source: velo-orange.blogspot.com

Once you forget most of what you know about bikes, the Strida makes perfect sense. It can be stored in the corner of an apartment closet, rolled (still folded) onto the elevator, unfolded in 10 seconds on the sidewalk and ridden around town at about three-times walking speed. Re-folded it will accompany you on the subway or bus. It's also great for plane travel so long as you just need transportation around a city. For a commute of less than 10 miles it's perfect and you can store it in your office. The little rack can even carry a small shopping bag or briefcase if used with a cargo net.

What the Strida is not for is touring, randonneuring, or club rides. My only complaint with the Strida is the gearing. I find that I can spin along comfortably a an estimated 12-14 mph, but I wish this was more like 16-18 mph. On the other hand I can make it up any hill around here easily and without getting out of the saddle. That's a good thing since it's tricky to ride a Strida out of the saddle.

Tags: bikes, folding-bikes, strida, review

<clipSource>http://velo-orange.blogspot.com/2007/11/strida-folding-bikes-are-here.html</clipSource>

370 penguins mysteriously show up in Brazil

clipped by: in place like a helicopter. The two-meter-long Odyssey IV will be able to move autonomously up to depths of 6,000 meters at a speed of 2.5 meters per second. But unlike other underwater robots, it will be able to stop at a specific location. It could be used by oil companies to inspect the footings of offshore oil platforms. It also could be used by marine archaeologists or oceanographers for specific missions — depending on its price.
