Researchers at the Universities of Bath and Warwick are developing a new antibiotic that can kill bacteria in two minutes.

They have made a synthetic compound that kills the bacteria by binding to its DNA, making it coil up and prevent it from working properly.

The DNA binding properties of the compound were discovered at the University of Warwick by Professor Mike Hannon and Professor Alison Rodger.

Initially the researchers focused on the application of this useful property for targeting the DNA of cancer cells, however the team quickly realised that it might also be a clever way of targeting drug-resistant bacteria.

Strikingly, they found that the compound quickly bound to its intended target (the bacteria's DNA) and killed virtually every cell within two minutes of being added.

(BANG) -Plans to bury Michael Jackson at Neverland have been cancelled. The singer's family were reportedly hoping to lay the star to rest at his beloved ranch but are now scrambling to find a new location amid fears it would be illegal to bury Michael at his former home.

No matter where the funeral is held, Michael's beloved chimpanzee Bubbles will not attend.

Instead, the animal will spend the day listening to "calming flute music" at the animal sanctuary in Wauchula, Florida, where he was moved when he became "too aggressive" to live with the star.

A Centre For Great Apes spokesman said: "It is sad for Bubbles but it is better that he stays here. We have not said anything to Bubble about Michael's death.

"There has been no invitation for him to attend the funeral. Maybe we'll mark the occasion another way."

Michael rescued Bubbles from a cancer research centre in 1985. The pair lived together for years, even dressing in matching outfits. (C) BANG Media International

Another day, another Obama infomercial.

President Barack Obama held a townhall style meeting today, one in which the audience was "hand-picked" by White House staffers.

It was conveniently "moderated" by White House domestic policy chief Valerie Jarrett.

Questioners included members from, gag, the SEIU (Service Employees International Union) and the group Health Care For America Now.

At one point, Obama just happened to pick a woman, named Debbie Smith, who, by pure coincidence, is a volunteer for Obama's "Organizing For America" group. She received tickets through the White House staff. Debbie proceeded to give a tear-jerker of a speech concerning her kidney cancer and how she cannot get health insurance, nor a job.

Obama, in an "I feel your pain" moment, hugged her, and told her she would receive help immediately. (Hallelujah! Can I git an "Amen"?!)

Just another example of honesty taking a back seat to Obama's agenda.

A PIONEERING treatment that blasts prostate cancer with sound waves can cure the disease without the need for invasive surgery, say researchers.

Men with early prostate cancer were given general anaesthetic and treated with high-intensity-focused ultrasound, which kills cancer cells.

The technique accurately zaps small amounts of tissue by heating it up to a temperature of between 80C and 90C.

It is so accurate that it can be used to treat the whole prostate gland or just the areas with cancer.

It means many patients could avoid conventional treatment like surgery and radiotherapy which treat the whole prostate and can carry the risk of side effects, including impotence, incontinence and bowel changes.

Prostate is the most common cancer among men in Britain with more than 30,000 new cases each year. In a study, the experimental HIFU therapy was used on 172 men whose cancer had not spread beyond their prostate.

Vegetarians 'avoid more cancers'

Vegetarians are generally less likely than meat eaters to develop cancer but this does not apply to all forms of the disease, a major study has found.

The study involving 60,000 people found those who followed a vegetarian diet developed notably fewer cancers of the blood, bladder and stomach.

Overall, their results suggested that while in the general population about 33 people in 100 will develop cancer during their lifetime, for those who do not eat meat that risk is reduced to about 29 in 100.

The researchers said they found marked differences between meat-eaters and vegetarians in the propensity to cancers of the lymph and the blood, with vegetarians just over half as likely to develop these forms of the disease.

In the case of multiple myeloma, a relatively rare cancer of the bone marrow, vegetarians were 75% less likely to develop the disease than meat-eaters.

The reduction was less notable for fish-eaters with these cancers.

My friend, Bill is dying of cancer. He probably has two or three days left. He's not conscious and while the caretakers say that he can recognize my voice, I doubt it. He's being given a lot of drugs including morphine, but they don't seem to give him peace. His body struggles as if he is trying to free himself from unseen restraints. Perhaps he's pain-free, but he definitely does not seem comfortable. However, I was able to say goodbye to Bill with a smile on my face because of something his wife told me a few minutes earlier. She said, "Bill spent the last five days of his conscious life smoking pot." Now, if you knew Bill you'd know how utterly preposterous that statement sounds. Bill was a retired Pediatric Cardiologist. He voted Republican all his life until he voted for Obama. He did not waste money or words. And he definitely had never smoked marijuana.
