Just wanted to share the cookie sheet calendar that we are making at my next workshop. I created this countdown calendar to get the girls around here excited about CTMH products as well as add a little family fun to the holiday season. The calendar pieces are stuck on the cookie sheet with magnets in between the solid cardstock and decorated top embellishment so they can be moved and changed with each year to come. On the back of the cardstock once the day is removed there is room for a holiday themed activity on the back and then the countdown number remains on the cookie sheet. I am doing a lot of cutting and stamping to get ready for the workshop but am excited to create something with the girls that they can use this holiday season. Let me know what you think.

Circle Nov. 17 on your calendar, for early that morning a moderate to possibly very strong showing of annual Leonid meteor shower is likely.

The very strong display will favor those living across most of central and eastern Asia. In this region, meteor rates might briefly rise to a few hundred per hour (the time frame for the most intense activity is anticipated sometime around 21:40 GMT).

A far more modest, but still potentially enjoyable display of a few dozen Leonid meteors per hour is expected to favor North America. In the United States and Canada, eastern observers will be particularly well-positioned for maximum activity, expected sometime between 3:30 and 5:30 a.m. EST, when the radiant of the Leonid shower will be well up in the dark southeastern sky.

The Leonid radiant is within the so-called "Sickle" of Leo; a backwards question-mark pattern of stars that outlines the head and mane of the constellation Leo, the Lion. Hence the meteors are known as "Leonids."

The Ancient Origins of Halloween

In today's world it is often difficult for us to imagine that there were ancient civilizations that came long before us, who were more aware and in tune with nature, astronomy and astrology than we are today with all of our advanced knowledge and technology.

Approximately one thousand years B.C., a religious order of Celtic priests known as the Druids lived in the British Isles. They used a lunar calendar that consisted of 13 months, with each month having within it 28 days, plus an additional day which was added to the calendar as in a leap year, to correspond to the solar/lunar year. This 13 month calendar was used by the Druids to calculate their year and important festivals. The Druidic religion focused on the natural and supernatural energies of the universe which they identified with the spirits of their sacred trees. These sacred trees formed the basis of the Druid astrological zodiac.

Celts believed that on the night before their new year, which they celebrated on Novermber 1, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, the Druids celebrated Samhain (pronounced sow-in), when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For someone who's entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter.

The term Halloween, originally spelled Hallowe’en, is shortened from All Hallows' Even – e'en is a shortening of even, which is a shortening of evening. This is ultimately derived from the Old English Eallra Hālgena ǣfen.

Will the world end in 2012? No, it won't.

Will there be a major cataclysm in 2012? Quite possibly.

Although this book concentrates on a potential global catastrophe at a random date within our immediate future, the ancient Mayan Long Count calendar is a powerful argument for that date being Dec 21, 2012.

2. The Mayan Calendar

Zero was an advanced concept in those days, something that the Romans were not aware of. Yet the Maya were comfortable enough with it to use a shell as its symbol, a tangible object representing an abstract concept. The Maya also used metrical calculation and place numeration, which were very clever for a culture that didn't use the wheel!

Although they had many calendars, they marked the passage of time with three cycles that ran in parallel.

I came up with the two different versions pictured above. I made the red one in a "book" style. Here's the inside, can you guess what it is?

It's an advent calendar that counts down with gum! You remove the gum packs from the cardboard sleeves and pop open a gum a day until Christmas. Here's what the gum packs look like on the foil side.
