2012 fears are down for Maya 'Long Count' calendar

Fears about the year 2012 rest on just one of at least three Maya calendar systems unearthed by scholars, the "Long Count," which began on Aug. 13, 3114 B.C.

The Long Count tracks the duration of what the Maya called "great cycles" of time. The cycle we're currently in ends on 13.0.0.0.0, what we non-Maya call Dec. 23, 2012.

"I tell my students it is similar to an odometer," says archaeologist Lisa Lucero of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "After it hits 100,000 miles, it starts again – but there is no new car, nor does the car self-destruct."

Worries about the date rest from a Maya inscription fragment suggesting the date's importance at the site of Tortuguero in Mexico, says archaeologist Kristin Romey, science adviser to Asylum.com. "The only problem is the Maya had Long Count calendar inscriptions mentioning baktuns (millennia) much further in the future at other sites, so 2012 hardly seems the end of the world."

Advent calendars have been a holiday tradition for centuries, and over that time countless versions have come and gone. While the more common variety is the rectangular shape with small, paper windows for chocolates, there are more creative renditions to consider, such as the walnut shell idea presented here. Besides the high level of creativity this one requires (teeny, tiny gifts only!), the best part of this Advent calendar is that it's green; you're not buying anything new. (Well, you might have to make a trip to the store for the walnuts — organic, of course.) The world is not coming to an end on December 21, 2012, US space agency NASA insists.

The latest big screen offering from Sony Pictures, 2012, arrives in theatres today.

The $US200 million production about the end of the world is based on internet rumours and myths backed by the Mayan calendar.

The film claims that the end of time will come when an obscure planet - Nibiru - heads toward and collides with Earth.

The planet was supposedly discovered by the Sumerians, according to claims by pseudo-scientists, paranormal activity enthusiasts and internet theorists.

Some websites accuse NASA of concealing the truth on the wayward planet's existence, but the US space agency has denounced such stories as an "internet hoax."

"There is no factual basis for these claims," NASA said in a question-and-answer post on its website.

If such a collision were real "astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye," it added.

Germany observes no official holiday on November 9th, the day when, twenty years ago, crowds of stunned, delirious East Germans breached the Berlin Wall. This is because November 9th is also the date on which Kaiser Wilhelm abdicated, in 1918, two days before Germany’s defeat in the First World War. On November 9, 1923, Hitler attempted to overthrow the Weimar Republic, in the Munich Beer Hall Putsch. In 1938, November 9th was the Night of Broken Glass, when Nazi gangs attacked Jews and their property across Germany and Austria, foreshadowing the genocide to come. The German calendar is appropriately inconvenient: nothing good is conserved without the active remembrance of something bad.

The revolutions of 1989 were made possible by a multiplicity of conditions: the courage of East Bloc dissidents and the hundreds of thousands of fellow-citizens who finally joined them;

the disastrous economies of the Communist countries;

the crucial forbearance of Mikhail Gorbachev.

There was a time when long distance players would write as pen pals would do and play a game of chess. Each would have their own board and would write back and forth detailing their each and every move. Today is somewhat different.

The basic western chess version is played on a checkerboard that has sixty four squares. There are sixteen pieces that include a king, a queen, two rooks, two, bishops, two knights, and eight pawns. Each piece can only move a certain way and some may be able to move only one square at a time, while others is able to move many squares if desired. The main objective is to capture the opponents king. If one does, the game is over.

As mentioned earlier, there are many online chess games that are able to be played. Some of these web sites are also able to teach one to play this exciting and highly competitive game too.
