Virtual worlds threaten 'values'

The growing number of toy-themed virtual worlds aimed at young people risks undermining the basic human values we wish to instil in children.

So said industry veteran Lord Puttnam opening a London conference devoted to discussing virtual worlds.

Lego Universe is an example of the type of virtual worlds Lord Puttnam is critical of.

Lord Puttnam was especially concerned about worlds created and run by toy makers, which are intended to tie in to a product line and encourage kids to buy the toys as well as play the game. Webkinz, Funkeys, BarbieGirls and TyGirlz were among the examples he pointed to according to the BBC.

clipper's remarks: Yes, this is my worry as well... and so I ask, why can't Webkinz rise above this? Bring in more challenging material? They need to "pump it up" soon, or kids will tire of rearranging their virtual rooms, and hopefully, also tire of endless, mindless buying.

Or maybe this will serve as a "vaccine" and they'll move all the way through the consumerism-dark-side, and come out on top, realizing that all this junk doesn't make their stuffed animal (or themselves) any happier.

Webkinz Pets are the Latest Toy Craze

The latest craze to hit toyland is Webkinz World. Webkinz pets are stuffed animals that come with their own serial number. You buy the animal in the store and then use the serial number to access the Webkinz web site.

You adopt your pet and give it a name. Your pet is then given some basic items like a room, some food, a balloon and 2000 in Kinzcash, the money that you can use to buy things for your pet in Webkinz World. By playing educational games, you earn more Kinzcash and are able to make sure your pet has the food, clothing and the necessities that he/she needs.

Webkinz World also allows your pet to play with the pets of your friends. You can also chat with your friends in a safe online environment.

They are called Webkinz, huggable, plush toys with elaborate virtual lives that spotlight how children's play is changing, moving effortlessly between the real world and the Web. And in less than two years, they have become must-have items for tech-savvy 'tweeners.

Webkinz combines classic stuffed animals with popular online trends, such as social networking and instant messaging. Other toys and Web sites have made similar efforts. Remember the late-1990s craze of Tamagotchi, billed as the world's first digital pet? More recently, Neopets.com began manufacturing such plush toys as the "cybunny," which mirrored the virtual animals on its site. But Webkinz claims to be the first to marry the physical and the virtual from its inception.

Each stuffed animal comes with an identification number that gives children access to the Webkinz site ( http://www.webkinz.com/). There, owners discover their pets' online personas ("I'll let you in on a secret," reads the profile of a cocker spaniel. "I love fish sticks, and I've always wanted a bunny clown.") Children can buy clothes for their pets using virtual money, outfitting them in baggy jeans or pink tutus. They can also decorate their pets' virtual rooms with such items as a stove, a boy-band poster or a bed shaped like a pirate ship.
