But it's not going anywhere. Why?

Seven Republican senators -- Tom Coburn, Jim DeMint, Jeff Sessions, Saxby Chambliss, David Vitter, Jim Bunning, and Richard Burr -- have placed a hold on the reauthorization.

The seven, led by Coburn, complain that the reauthorization is too costly.

politics is at play. Gerson writes that some Democratic senators have no interest in passing something that would give credit to the president.

[S]upporters of the PEPFAR reauthorization now estimate a 50 percent chance it will be shelved until next year. Without a five-year U.S. commitment on AIDS funding, other countries would be reluctant to put new people on treatment. And lives would be lost.

<HP _moz-userdefined=""></HP>Surely this is one place where saving lives should outweigh politics. The coal industry creates over 60,000 jobs in Kentucky, including approximately 15,000 coal miners. Over half of the country’s electricity is generated by coal, and coal constitutes over 90 percent of America’s fossil-fuel resources.

Clip Source: mcconnell.senate.gov

        Thursday, May 1, 2008

Bill to Increase Domestic Oil Production

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell joined his Republican colleagues Thursday in introducing the American Energy Production Act of 2008, which would increase domestic energy production and help lower gas prices.

“The coal we can mine in this country alone would be enough to supply our nation for more than 250 years,” Senator McConnell said. “What Saudi Arabia is to oil, America is to coal.”

The bill would also expand domestic energy production on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS), in Alaska and through the development of oil shale in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah. It would accelerate the development of advanced batteries to power plug-in hybrid vehicles, and encourage the construction of new refineries to bolster domestic supplies. And it would suspend filling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve for six months.

Tags: legislation, domestic oil production, mcconnell, bunning, american energy production act of 2008, continental shelf, alaska, oil shale, cto

<clipSource>http://mcconnell.senate.gov/record.cfm?id=297147&start=1</clipSource>

What does Sen. We have reason to wonder whether the hold was Ensign's doing all along. Similarly, Senator Jim Bunning (R-KY) now has an objection to moving forward with HR 1255, the Presidential Records Act Amendments of 2007. The bill would overturn an outrageous Executive Order that would keep presidential records hidden from public view indefinitely.

The EO turns on its head the purpose and principles of the Presidential Records Act, which was enacted in 1978 to ensure that presidential records are the property of the federal government. In a nutshell, the PRA says that once the president leaves office, the National Archives has control of his papers.

The Presidential Records Act Amendments of 2007 would lift this shroud of secrecy from presidential records.

Tags: politics, senate, executive order, records, disclosure

<clipSource>http://www.sunlightfoundation.com/presidential_records_in_the_dark</clipSource>

Open letter to the president

clipped by: n2sooners
clipper's remarks: One of the biggest lies about the recent immigration bill is that it is a 'comprehensive' bill. Fact is, all the border enforcement provisions in the bill are already authorized under law. And in the case of the physical security, the fence bill passed last year authorizes more than the current bill does.

In other words, it offers absolutely nothing when it comes to security if we would just enforce the laws already enacted. The bill offers nothing but amnesty to millions of people here illegally. And if we can't currently stem the tide of illegals entering the country, what will amnesty do to help?

Clip Source: demint.senate.gov

June 12th, 2007

Dear Mr. President:

We respectfully ask that your Administration enforce the border security laws that have already been authorized by Congress regardless of whether the Senate passes the immigration reform bill. The bill assumes that several critical border security benchmarks can be achieved within 18 months. These security triggers are already authorized under current law and can be completed without the immigration bill. We believe these enforcement measures are vital and should not wait until Congress passes additional immigration reforms.

Securing the border is the best way to restore trust with the American people and facilitate future improvements of our immigration policy.
