Obama Searching for the Root Causes of Ft. Hood Massacre

It looks like the man who killed 13 soldiers and police at Ft. Hood was a Muslim radical who hated America, resented our occupation of Muslim lands, would not be photographed with women, and chanted "Allahu Akbar" before he launched a one-man terrorist attack, but according to CBS White House Correspondent Mark Knoller, Obama wants to know what really made him do it:

Obama said he met today with FBI Director et al to discuss "what caused one individual to turn his gun on fellow servicemen and women.”

It's hard not to be reminded of Obama's famous post-9/11 remarks, which first came to light in the New Yorker last summer. This from a speech the week after the attacks in which he likewise wanted to know, what would cause a bunch of Muslim fanatics to fly airplanes into American buildings:

Entitlement to a New Lease

The Landlord and Tenant Act 1980 which was amended by Landlord and Tenant Act 1994 provide statutory entitlements to tenants in a landlord/tenant relationship.

The reliefs apply where the property that is the subject of the agreement is a tenement which is a legal description but has been interpreted fairly generously. It includes buildings which are not permanent and can include sheds erected without planning permission.

To qualify for the statutory entitlements the main purpose/use must attach to the buildings. If there is land involved then the land must be subsidiary and ancillary to the main use of the buildings.

Section 16 of Landlord and Tenant Act 1980 provides that a tenant will be entitled to a new tenancy at the expiry of his existing lease if he can prove one of the following equities

Hitchhiking through Romania

While wandering around the Carpathian Mountains on a recent trip through Romania, I spent a lot of time asking people for insight on facets of Transylvania more interesting than the Dracula tomfoolery. I was hoping that I would talk to a stranger who could tell me where I would find the gypsy camp where the best most exotic acrobats are manufactured, or something just as hypothetically awesome like a Romanian warship factory or a peasant curling league, but no one was really giving me answers. Then, as I was eating supper in what seemed like the Romanian equivalent to The Cracker Barrel, a dodgy looking Irish expat started talking to me about medieval citadels.

We passed through one in particular that looked as close as I may ever see to the final result of a 14^th-century Nordic pillaging. Everything in the entire town was burned to ashes except for some of the original wooden structural supports of the buildings.

Literally the entire city was decimated.

Twin Towers warship arrived in New York

A warship built with steel salvaged from the World Trade Center has arrived in New York City.

The USS New York sailed up the Hudson River to near Ground Zero, where it fired a 21-gun salute in tribute to those killed in the 2001 attacks.

It was watched by relatives of 9/11 victims, along with members of the emergency services and the public.

The US Navy is to hold an official commissioning ceremony for the new warship on Saturday.

The New York set off on its maiden voyage from Louisiana, where it was built, nearly three weeks ago.

The bow of the boat contains 7.5 tonnes of melted steel from the fallen buildings of the World Trade Center.

The ship's crest includes images of the Twin Towers and features the colours of the city departments that first responded to the terrorist attacks in which nearly 3,000 people died.

People gathered by the waterfront to watch the ship's 21-gun salute honouring those who died in the 11 September attacks.

Does President of SEIU Have Preferential Access To White House?

As far as I can tell, THE Andrew Stern was the top outside visitor to the White House with approximately 20 visits, or about three visits per month, including four relatively small meetings with the president and a dozen with other White House staffers. Stern has openly bragged about the SEIU's $61 million investment in Barack Obama. It certainly bought him a lot of access.

Update: And while we're on the subject of the SEIU, here's an interesting entry: On March 3, ACORN spokesman Scott Levenson met with White House political affairs director Patrick Gaspard, who came to the White House from SEIU. Unsurprising, given the groups' close ties. I wonder what they talked about.

The White House has posted 481 visitor records, covering requested names from the period between January and July. But as White House special counsel Norm Eisen points out, not all the names belong to the people you think they do:

A lot of people visit the White House, up to 100,000 each month, with many of those folks coming to tour the buildings. Given this large amount of data, the records we are publishing today include a few “false positives” –

Nevertheless, we were asked for those names and so we have included records for those individuals who were here and share the same names.

I've been playing with the list and figured out a useful tip for weeding out false positives: Look at the "Total people" category in the spreadsheet. The Andrew Stern who had a one-on-one with Rahm Emanuel in February is probably the president of the SEIU. The one who toured the White House with 542 other people is probably a different guy.

History of the Christmas Advent Calendar

As a child, Gerhard Lang's mother had made him a basic advent calendar so that he could count down the days until Christmas. She placed 24 sweets onto a piece of cardboard and each day the young Gerhard would take and eat a sweet. When he grew up Gerhard Lang made the first printed advent calendar in 1908.

Later, in 1946, we see Richard Sellmer producing calendars in Germany. The US authorities had to grant him a license in the now post war Germany which led to his advent calendars becoming known and indeed very popular in the USA.

Sellmer's first advent calendar was called 'The Little Town'. The calendar had pictures of many buildings in the town and you would open the windows and the doors to find nice things underneath for each day of advent.

By the end of the 1950s, chocolate advent calendars had appeared, and by the following decade they had become widespread.
