Amid their gleaming, modern apartment buildings, residents say they have little in common with the people who have hauled mobile homes to hilltops in hopes of deepening Israel's presence in the occupied West Bank. But they expect the bulldozers and cement mixers to keep supplying larger schools and more housing, a demand that the country's political leadership is finding hard to refuse.

The sun is out and shining bright. The sky is blue and the grass is green. Summers here and it seems everyone is wanting a new family portrait on the beach, at the park, or in downtown.

Here are some things to keep in mind when creating family portraits:

Think in “mini-groups”.

Use groups of two’s and three’s to compose your family shot.

Remember “levels”.

vary the levels of your subjects

Consider “color”.

Watching even lighting, but don’t stress about it.

Pick shade:

find awnings, the shaded back side of buildings, or tree cover to diffuse the harsh sunlight

Move quickly:

The more people you have in a shot, the less time you have to create it

Be fun and spontaneous!

Background work:

Most of all, spend some time asking questions of what the family wants.

WWII poison darts secret emerges

Top secret War Office papers have revealed a strange and macabre weapons project tested by the Allies during World War II.

Lethal clouds of tiny poisoned darts were to be tipped with mustard gas to kill enemy troops without damaging nearby buildings or equipment.

The concept was developed between 1941 and 1945 at the Porton Down research base in Wiltshire.

Research scientists thought clouds of poison darts, blasted from canisters high above the battlefield, could be even more lethal against enemy troop concentrations than high-explosive shells.

Mustard gas compounds in the needles would ensure anyone whose skin was broken would die a swift and horrible death, or at least have terrible injuries.

"But it shows the Allies were prepared to consider anything - no matter how gruesome - to secure a victory."

The file shows the darts were never used because they were a "highly uneconomical weapon" and only a small proportion of people would have been killed.

Three Bay Area cities have made it into a recently released ranking of the top ten greenest cities in the nation.

San Francisco (at number two), Oakland (ranked fourth) and Berkeley (at seven) are all taking key measures to reduce their carbon footprint, according to Mother Nature Network.

San Francisco is lauded for its goal to be America's solar energy leader, its innovative recycling program, and for being the first US city to ban plastic grocery bags, a concept that supports its effort to divert 75% of landfill waste by 2010.

Oakland is cited as being home to the nation's cleanest tap water, hydrogen-powered public transit and the country's oldest wildlife refuge. The port city also plans to have zero waste and be oil-independent by 2020, and already gets 17% of its energy from renewable sources.

While Berkeley is recognized as being a leader in the incubation of clean technology for wind power, solar power, biofuels and hydropower.

In order for the destructive surface waves to pass smoothly into the plastic, the stiffness and elasticity of the rings must be very closely controlled. The path can be molded into an arc that directs surface waves away from objects inside the cloak by tweaking the characteristics of the plastic. The result of their research is an “earthquake cloak” that could render objects “invisible” to shocks, storm waves or tsunamis. And they aren’t even Level 8 mages!

How does the cloak work? In order to understand the mechanics, it’s important to know that the seismic waves of an earthquake fall into two main categories: body waves that roll through the Earth, and surface waves that travel, naturally, across the surface. The team’s findings show that controlling body waves would be too complex, but they’ve also concluded that controlling surface waves is possible within the constructs of conventional engineering. This conclusion actually works out quite well since it is surface waves that are more destructive
