Organic Insect Repellent

Save onion skins, peels and ends then refrigerate in an empty margarine-sized tub or ziploc bag until the container is full.
Once you have enough, place the onion pieces in a pail and fill with warm water. Soak for a few days, up to a week. Optional: You can keep this on the patio in the sun to steep.
After one week, strain the onion bits out and store the onion water in spray bottles. Bury the onion bits around plants that are prone to aphids, spiders and other pests.
Spray both house and garden plants with the water to fight aphids and pests.

*You could also mix your garlic trimmings in with the onion pieces, bugs hate garlic too.

Alligator blood 'may fight bugs'

Proteins isolated from alligator blood may lead to new antibiotics to treat "superbugs", such as MRSA.

Speaking at the American Chemical Society conference, US researchers said the discovery could also lead to treatments for severe burns and ulcers.

Alligators can suffer serious injuries during fierce territorial battles but heal quickly despite contact with bacteria, viruses and fungi.

Antibiotic resistance is on the rise yet there is a lack of new treatments.

Humans build up immunity to infection-causing organisms after coming into contact with them.

But, the Louisiana researchers said, previous work has shown alligators have a particularly strong immune system which can fight microorganisms such as fungi, viruses, and bacteria without being previously exposed to them.

I’m an avid Facebook user, and I love some of the more recent features, especially the Live Feed and the Chat. The first gives me a great, thorough overview of what my friends have been doing lately, while a solid portion of my chatting (of which I do a lot) has moved to Facebook. However, these features have now been out for more than a couple of month, and unfortunatelly they’re still buggy as hell.

The Live Feed is laggy. Most of the time it’s not up to date - and we’re not talking seconds or minutes here, we’re talking hours late, after which it suddenly gets updated all at once. Sure, I can still use the News Feed, but I prefer to see all of my friends’ activity, not only what Facebook’s algorithms chose as relevant. Perhaps I’m alone here, but the Live Feed is basically the most important part of my Facebook experience, and in its current state it’s nearly unusable.

We're all familiar with hubcaps as the utilitarian devices that cover our wheels, helping travelers everywhere roll around in style. But one artist has found a new purpose for these protective pieces of metal: fashioning fantastical animals out of what used to be rubbish.

Ranging from the prosaic--turtles, fish, bugs--to the outlandish (full-sized dragons!) the artist Ptolemy reshapes hubcaps to create startlingly real-looking creatures. He often strategically incorporates the brand's logo into the sculpture's design; hence the BMW piranha.

All of Ptolemy's creations are made exclusively from 100% recycled materials. This means that everything that is now a sculpture, used to be spinning around on the wheels of a car, so the metal bears all the scratches and abrasions from it's former life, just like a real creature would.

SpaceX has made history. Its privately developed rocket has made it into space.

After three failed launches, the company founded by Elon Musk worked all of the bugs out of their Falcon 1 launch vehicles.

The entire spectacle was broadcast live from Kwajalein Atoll in the South Pacific. Cameras mounted on the spacecraft showed our planet shrinking in the distance and the empty first stage engine falling back to Earth.

"I don't know what to say... because my mind is just blown," said Musk, during a brief address to his staff after the successful launch. "This is just the first step of many."

The feat is a giant leap forward for privately-funded space ventures, and follows the spectacular 2004 suborbital flight of SpaceShipOne.

Musk seemed almost overcome with emotion. In the coming years, his company will try to make space transportation ten times cheaper and more reliable.

Why leaves fall off trees is discovered

Deciduous - Latin for 'falling' - trees, use an elaborate cellular mechanism to part company from their leaves, which act as "solar cells" in the summer but become superfluous in the darker winter months.

At the base of each leaf is a special layer called the abscission zone. When the time comes in autumn to shed a leaf, cells in this layer begin to swell, slowing the transport of nutrients between the tree and leaf.

Once the abscission zone has been blocked, a tear line forms and moves downwards, until eventually the leaf is blown away or falls off. A protective layer seals the wound, preventing water evaporating and bugs getting in.

Leaves naturally turn yellow as the green chlorophyl that generates energy from sunlight is drained from them but the colour attracts aphids. To conceal themselves from the invading insects, some species inject a bright red pigment.

SpaceX has made history. Their privately-developed rocket has made it into space!

After three failed launches, the company founded by Elon Musk worked all of the bugs out of their Falcon 1 launch vehicles.

As the rocket ascended, cheers rang out during every crucial step of the launch sequence, and now, their headquarters in Hawthorne, California has erupted in excitement.

The most tense moment came just before stage separation. At that critical moment, the third launch attempt had failed. This time, it worked out perfectly.

Eight minutes after leaving the ground, Falcon 1 reached a speed of 5200 meters per second and passed above the International Space Station.
