Feel The Eyes Upon You

This image used to grace the inside walls of a bus I used to ride. It also had a caption: “Secure beneath the watchful eyes.”

Brrrr.

Humans are a highly social species; perhaps we’ve evolved to be sensitive to being watched because what other people see you doing may alter the way they treat you. In our evolutionary past, individuals seen to be selfish or greedy may have found themselves ostracized — or even killed.

To my mind, all this raises a slew of questions. Our cities are plastered with images of faces — do these influence our behavior? What about countries that have real dictators, whose photographs are ubiquitous — does that have an effect? Moreover, to date, experiments have looked at the effects of eyes on generosity and honesty. But can images of eyes modulate other aspects of our behavior — a tendency for vandalism, say? Instead of signs announcing, in words, the presence of surveillance systems, would pictures of pairs of eyes be more effective?

The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings as bitter winds and snow showers sweep across England.

Heavy snow has hit Scotland, north-east England, the Midlands and the south-east, with the north-east the worst affected area.

There has been widespread travel chaos with icy roads and up to 10cm (3.9in) of snow. Motorists have been warned not to travel unless absolutely necessary.

The snow spread into England after falling in Scotland overnight.

'Very icy'

The BBC Weather Centre said there would be an extremely wintry start to Easter morning for much of the country with "very treacherous" conditions on the roads.

The major problem is with the roads. It is horrendous

North Yorkshire Police

A number of lorries are already stuck and the snow gates are closed on both the Cumbria and Durham sides of the A66. The Highways Agency was using snow ploughs to clear the route.

QUEBEC CITY, Quebec (Reuters) - Although Canada is one of the snowiest countries in the world, a series of violent "snow rage" incidents reveal that even the locals have their limits.

Police in the French-speaking province of Quebec said on Wednesday that people were fighting over snow clearing and even parking spaces.

Recent Canadian winters have been mild but this one looks set to break all-time records for snow. One storm last weekend dumped 23 inches on the capital Ottawa and 19 inches on Quebec City, which has already received 210 inches this year.

Quebec City police said they had been called to a dozen violent disputes about snow from one property ending up on someone else's. The drifts outside some houses are 12 feet and higher.

"It's happened particularly often this year ... you have to be used to snow if you live in Quebec but it's been a bit extreme this year. People are fed up," she said. Continued...

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (AP) — Brace yourself for more wintry weather.

Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow Saturday, leading the groundhog to forecast six more weeks of winter.

The rodent was pulled from his stump by members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Inner Circle, top-hat- and tuxedo-wearing businessmen who carry out the tradition.

Each Feb. 2, thousands of people descend on Punxsutawney, a town of about 6,100 people some 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, to celebrate what had essentially been a German superstition

The belief is that if a hibernating animal cast a shadow on Feb. 2 — the Christian holiday of Candlemas — winter would last another six weeks. If no shadow was seen, legend said spring would come early.

Good news for your great-grandchildren! While they’re schvitzing up a storm thanks to the unstoppable effects of global warming, they can still take comfort in an ice cold Paris Hilton and her multitude of frozen pupsicles.

Alps host mass naked photo shoot

Nearly 600 men and women volunteers have stripped naked to pose for US photographer Spencer Tunick on the slope of a melting Swiss glacier.

The photo shoot on the Aletsch glacier was commissioned by environmental group Greenpeace as part of a campaign to raise awareness about global warming.

Despite the Alpine setting 2,300m (7545 feet) up, the temperature was well above freezing, at between 10 and 15C.

Tunick specialises in such scenes, which he calls "body landscapes".

His previous backdrops have ranged from Caracas to New York.

The Aletsch glacier is a protected Unesco World Heritage site.
