Anti-psychotic drugs linked to deaths

A review of the use of anti-psychotic drugs for dementia patients in Britain has concluded they are largely unnecessary and sometimes deadly.

The review ordered by government ministers concludes about 1,800 deaths are linked to the drugs.

The anti-psychotic drugs in question were originally developed to treat schizophrenia but over the past 30 years they have been increasingly used to subdue disturbed or violent dementia patients.

According to the report commissioned by Britain's department of health, of the 180,000 patients given the drug, just 36,000 actually benefited.

For many others like Arthur Truman, it was a disaster. His health deteriorated rapidly after being prescribed powerful drugs known as the chemical cosh and his son Allan Truman feared the worst.

Report author Professor Sube Banerjee says not only are the drugs over-prescribed by the National Health Service (NHS), they are often given for too long.

Sharon Osbourne has apologized for saying that Britain's Got Talent runner-up Susan Boyle was hit by "the ugly stick."

Last month, Osbourne, 57, appeared on Sirius XM Radio's The Opie & Anthony Show and was asked about Boyle. She cracked, "You just want to say God bless and here's a Gillette razor."

But on her Twitter page this week, Osbourne changed her tune.

"Susan Boyle is a lovely gracious woman and I took advantage of that by poking fun at her," she wrote. "I would never want to be responsible for hurting Susan and I must apologize for getting a cheap laugh at her expense."

The singer said the X-Faxtor was 'TV karaoke', 'soap opera that has nothing to do with music' and that Simon Cowell had 'no recognisable talent', in what experts described as a 'horrifying blaze of correctness'.

Professor Henry Brubaker, of the Institute for Studies, said: "The Stockholm Commission of October 2003 established beyond doubt that Ten Summoner's Tales was the wrongest thing ever done.

"It was so wrong that millions of people based their entire lives on doing the diametric opposite of whatever came out of Sting's mouth. We are now in uncharted territory. May God protect us all."

Nikki Hollis, a terrified woman from Peterborough, said the makers of the X-Factor must be held accountable: "Do you see what you have done Mr Cowell? You have made 'it' right about something. Confront your shame!"

IN a rapidly changing global media landscape, Clive Marshall has no doubt about one thing - the future of news agencies.

The outgoing chief executive of Australia's AAP, soon to head Britain's Press Association, says the news agencies of half a century ago would have relished today's opportunities.

"A news agency's customer base back then would have been the newspapers, plus a public broadcaster," Mr Marshall said in an interview.

"Now we have the internet, mobile phones, every conceivable device that takes content.

"If you had said to the people who preceded us that in 50 years time there will be an almost unlimited demand for news and information, and an almost unlimited number of platforms, they would have said, 'We'll have that day today. Bring it on'.

Already they have the most comprehensive DNA database of citizens in the world (it has taken an EU court ruling to restrict the holding of innocent citizens DNA to 6 years) now they will be monitoring and storing every call, text, email and website a citizen visits. Every phone call, text message, email and website visit made by private citizens is to be stored for a year and will be available for monitoring by government bodies.

All telecoms companies and internet service providers will be required by law to keep a record of every customer’s personal communications, showing who they have contacted, when and where, as well as the websites they have visited.

The Home Office admitted that only one third of respondents to its six-month consultation on the issue supported its proposals, with 50 per cent fearing that the scheme lacked sufficient safeguards to protect the highly personal data from abuse.

Chris Huhne, the Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman, has criticised the amount the scheme will cost for what he said is effectively “state spying”.

John Yates, Britain’s head of anti-terrorism, has argued that the legislation is vital for his investigators.

Who Is a Jew? Court Ruling in Britain Raises Question

LONDON — The questions before the judges in Courtroom No. 1 of Britain’s Supreme Court were as ancient and as complex as Judaism itself.

Who is a Jew? And who gets to decide?

David Lightman with his daughter, who was denied admission to the Jews' Free School because her mother's conversion was not recognized. But a court ruling has voided the admissions policy.

The case began when a 12-year-old boy, an observant Jew whose father is Jewish and whose mother is a Jewish convert, applied to the school, JFS. Founded in 1732 as the Jews’ Free School, it is a centerpiece of North London’s Jewish community. It has around 1,900 students, but it gets far more applicants than it accepts.

Because M’s mother converted in a progressive, not an Orthodox, synagogue, the school said, she was not a Jew — nor was her son. It turned down his application.

State to 'spy' on every phone call, email and web search

Every phone call, text message, email and website visit made by private citizens is to be stored for a year and will be available for monitoring by government bodies.

Despite widespread opposition to the increasing amount of surveillance in Britain, 653 public bodies will be given access to the information, including police, local councils, the Financial Services Authority, the ambulance service, fire authorities and even prison governors.

They will not require the permission of a judge or a magistrate to obtain the information, but simply the authorisation of a senior police officer or the equivalent of a deputy head of department at a local authority.

The warning, which coincided with news that the biggest devaluation in the pound since the 1930s has failed to stem the rising trade deficit, is the latest blow for the UK's economic credibility.

David Riley, Fitch's co-head of global sovereign ratings, said that record levels of Government debt meant that unless the next Government makes serious efforts to bring spending under control and reduce that debt, Britain could lose its AAA rating.

In spite of the fall in sterling, the trade deficit widened in September to the biggest level since January, increasing from £6.1bn to £7.2bn, according to the Office for National Statistics. The increase was partly due to a rise in car imports, as the scrappage scheme encouraged households to spend and pushed car imports up by 30pc

"If there was another significant fiscal stimulus package in the UK, then UK rating would be at risk."

although exports rose by 3.9pc, imports increased by 7.5pc.

Viktoria Cowley was just a toddler when she was airlifted out of Vietnam, one of 99 children plucked from the war-torn country by the Daily Mail. Now she is trying to reunite the scattered evacuees.

Viktoria Cowley doesn't know how old she is, but she thinks about 36. Orphaned at a young age during the Vietnam War, she doesn't even know her parents' names.

Her earliest documented experience dates from April 1975, when she appeared on the front page of the Daily Mail, aged about two. She was one of 99 babies and children airlifted out of Saigon in the newspaper's mercy mission as the Vietcong advanced at the end of the war.

Now, three decades after her arrival in Britain, Viktoria, known as Vikki, of Eastbourne, has recently embarked on a mission of her own - to reunite her fellow travellers. She has made contact with 15 so far.

One million strollers recalled after fingertip amputations

US authorities have announced a recall of 1 million baby strollers made by Britain's Maclaren, saying they posed a risk of "fingertip amputation" to young children.

"Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed," the Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a statement.

The Chinese-manufactured strollers' hinge mechanism "poses a fingertip amputation and laceration hazard to the child when the consumer is unfolding/opening the stroller", the commission said.

The firm has received 15 reports of children placing their finger in the stroller's hinge mechanism, and 12 reports of fingertip amputations in the United States.

The recall involves all Maclaren single and double umbrella strollers. They have word "Maclaren" printed on the stroller and included models Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, TechnoXLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno and Easy Traveller.

The products sold from 1999 until this month for between $US100 and $US360.
