There have been people on St Kilda since prehistoric times, exploiting the rich resources of the sea, growing crops and keeping animals. It is not clear when the first settlers came to St Kilda, but simple stone tools found on Hirta suggest that Bronze Age travellers may have visited St Kilda from the Western Isles some 4,000 to 5,000 years ago. In the 1830s the Rev Neil Mackenzie found what were probably remains of burial cists in Village Bay. Excavations in 1995 revealed a possible burial structure dating from the Bronze Age.

Gaddafi son says Lockerbie families were 'greedy'

He said: “I just wish that the needs of the relatives, namely a thirst for the truth and for justice would be attended to, rather than an alleged hunger for money. So far as many relatives I know would say, we would gladly repay any ’compensation’ money if we could just have our loved ones back.

“Financial ’compensation’ must remain in its inverted commas. Money cannot buy our families back.”

In a letter published in The Herald newspaper today, Dr Swire said the Libyan government’s admission of guilt for the Lockerbie bombing had allowed its economy to recover while giving the West access to the country’s oil industry.

Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's son has accused relatives of the Lockerbie bombing victims of "trading with the blood of their sons and daughters” in their demands for compensation.

Saif al-Islam al-Gaddafi, who is seen as the leading candidate to succeed his father as Libyan leader, said that the Lockerbie families were "very greedy” during negotiations over payouts for the deaths of loved ones.

Mr Gaddafi also told BBC2’s The Conspiracy Files that the Libyan government had only taken responsibility for Britain’s worst terrorist attack in order to get international sanctions lifted.

“You have to ask the families of the victims,” he said. “The negotiation with them, it was very terrible and very materialistic and was very greedy. They were asking for more money and more money and more money.”

He continued: “I think they were very greedy and I think they were trading with the blood of their sons and daughters.”

The clock is ticking on two of Britain’s most important paintings and £100million must be found from the public purse by 1st January, 2009 to keep them.

Together valued at £300million on the open market and owned by the Duke of Sutherland, the Titian masterpieces are currently on display in the National Gallery of Scotland. They form part of a 27 piece ‘Old Masters’ collection held by the Duke, estimated in total to be worth over £1billion.

LONDON - A British politician says he has won a victory for an endangered icon - the red telephone booth.

Thousands of the kiosks have been removed in recent years as mobile telephones have cut into payphone use.

Conservative Party lawmaker Alan Duncan says phone company BT PLC has agreed to let communities adopt the booths - minus their telephones - to help preserve local heritage. Local authorities can keep the phones as well if they pay part of the maintenance costs.

BT announced plans in April to remove 9,000 phone booths, including many of the red models designed by Giles Gilbert Scott.

Duncan said Thursday that the "adopt-a-kiosk" plan would help ensure "that red phone boxes do not disappear into the great gray blur of the modern British streetscape."

Mystery Chinese iPhone worker becomes Internet star

CANBERRA, (Reuters) - A Chinese factory worker has become an Internet sensation after a picture of her smiling and flashing a peace sign to a co-worker testing an Apple iPhone stayed on the phone that was sold to a man in Britain.

Photos of the unidentified, smiling woman were posted on the Apple discussion website MacRumours.com by a customer identified as "markm49uk" from Kingston-upon-Hull and quickly posted around other sites.

"It would appear that someone on the production line was having a bit of fun - has anyone else found this?"

Dr Sabine Begall and colleagues from the University of Duisburg-Essen looked at thousands of images of cattle on Google Earth in Britain, Ireland, India and the USA. They also studied 3,000 deer in the Czech Republic. The deer tended to face north when resting or grazing.

The scientists concluded that they were behaving in the same way as the deer.

Huge variations in the wind direction and sunlight in the areas where the beasts were found meant that the scientists were able to rule out those factors as being responsible for the direction they were facing.

"We conclude that the magnetic field is the only common and most likely factor responsible for the observed alignment," the scientists wrote in an article published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal.

The British economy will contract in 2009 in its first full year of recession since the early 1990s, one of the country's leading economic forecasting groups said today.

Capital Economics said a combination of a weaker than anticipated domestic economy, a recession in the eurozone and the threat of a contraction in bank lending would result in a quarter-point reduction in gross domestic product next year.

A separate report yesterday from the ratings agency Standard & Poor's said Europe was no longer likely to remain immune from the US-prompted slowdown and should be braced for a period of stagflation, while the chief executive of Britain's biggest independent financial adviser warned that Britain was heading for further trouble.

"The state of the economy is very worrying and I don't think people have properly factored in how bad things really are," said Hargreaves Lansdown boss Peter Hargreaves.

The sub-prime crisis is not over and could get worse. Even if the US economy survives this one, it will remain a mountain of risk and delusion. “America is the greatest financial risk you can think of.”

Its primary problem is that both banks and government are staffed by academic economists running their deluded models. Britain and Europe have better prospects because our economists tend to be more pragmatic, adapting to conditions rather than following models. But still we are dependent on American folly.

“Complex systems don’t allow for slack and everybody protects that system. The banking system doesn’t have that slack. In a normal ecology, banks go bankrupt every day. But in a complex system there is a tendency to cluster around powerful units. Every bank becomes the same bank so they can all go bust together.”

'IRA Semtex' used in Northern Ireland attack

The Provisional IRA was meant to have decommissioned its stockpiles of weaponry in what had proved to be the most difficult part of the peace process to accomplish, with an independent group led by the retired Canadian General John de Chastelain overseeing the operation. The decommissioning process was formally concluded in 2005.

The admission by the police that Semtex was used confirms a long-held suspicion that the Provisionals never surrendered all their weaponry and suggests that some of its members are now actively assisting the dissidents – in groups such as the Real IRA and the Continuity IRA – or have crossed over into their ranks, taking with them resources previously controlled and held by PIRA.

LONDON - A computer containing banking security details of more than a million people has been sold on eBay for 35 pounds ($92), bank officials said - the latest in a series of losses of personal data in the U.K.

The computer contained account numbers, passwords, mobile telephone numbers and signatures. It belonged to MailSource UK - an arm of Graphic Data, an archiving company that holds financial information for Royal Bank of Scotland, NatWest and American Express.

The security breach became known when the computer's buyer found the information and contacted authorities.

Britain's Information Commissioner's Office has launched an investigation into the incident. Banks in Britain are obligated under the Data Protection Act to secure personal information. But banking and other highly sensitive information is being lost with increasing frequency.

Our Olympic success is just one of many things to celebrate

In 1996, after 17 years of Conservative government, the past six under the premiership of the cricketing Major, Great Britain went to the Atlanta Olympics and won precisely one gold medal.

And if Gordon Brown is to get it in the neck for every ill, real and imagined, why should he not get some credit for this?

Last week the Mayor of London, surfing the new narrative, praised modern British youth, adding: “If you believe the politicians, we have a broken society, in which the courage and morals of young people have been sapped by welfarism and political correctness. And if you look at what is happening at the Beijing Olympics, you can see what piffle that is.”

Britain is demonstrably less “broken” than it was in the late 70s and at the height of the Thatcher era in the mid and late 80s.
