Amsterdam's streets deliver a succession of handsome, gabled houses and shapely humpbacked bridges

While one of the greatest pleasures of visiting Amsterdam – wandering along the canals admiring the old, gabled buildings – is always free, the city is not otherwise a cheap one to visit. Accommodation in the centre is in short supply and therefore expensive. The museums and art galleries all charge, with admission to the major ones costing £10 or more, and it's easy to spend £30 a head on dinner in a modest eetcafé. But there are ways to keep costs down and still eat well, see the sights and have a comfortable stay. For example, good b &b s (such as those we recommend, which need to be booked well in advance) are similarly priced to budget hotels but offer much better quality. And you can eat cheaply, but well, if you stick to Amsterdam's many ethnic restaurants and cafés.

East Bay bridges ready for bicyclists

The key missing link for one of the Bay Area's great bike road trips is complete.

The new bike lanes on the Benicia-Martinez and Carquinez bridges provide connections for a loop ride of 25 to 50 miles. Or use one of two parks, Martinez Regional Shoreline or Carquinez Strait Regional Shoreline, as launch points for great, short rides to the bridges.

Whether choosing an easy ride or a tough challenge, the payoff is a shoreline ride with spectacular views.

The most ambitious ride here is the Carquinez Strait Scenic Loop. I have not done this entire trip yet, but experts at bike shops call it a rewarding challenge. The Bay Area Ridge Trail Council is collaborating on completing a dedicated trail, but there are still gaps where you have to scramble on roads in traffic.

James Lakely, a research fellow at the Heartland Institute, recently pointed me to a new study he’s written on the network neutrality debate. (See also his op-ed summarizing the argument.) Lakely is clearly a smart guy, and his paper is backed up by a significant amount of research. However, the basic argument of his paper—that the network neutrality movement has “unwittingly bought into” the “radical agenda” of the free software movement—strikes me as pretty misguided.

Puente de Isabel II (Province of Cavite)

The bridge was built by Brother Matias Carbonell OSRA in 1857 and situated along Calle Liko and spans the Rio de Imus linking the town of Imus to Bacoor.

Puente Campol (Province of Nueva Vizcaya)

The bridge was built by the Spanish conquistadors in 1739 and situated in the southernmost portion of the Cagayan Valley.

Puente de Barit (Province of lIocos Norte)

The bridge is situated along the Laoag-Bacarra Nacional Road. Nothing much is known about its heritage, but it is a beautiful piece of civic infrastructure that serves as a very important link to towns of north of Laoag.

fourth year the annual Seven Bridges Walk will return on Sunday 25 October 2009

The course will be open from 8am to 5pm on event day. You can register for the event from 2 September by following the links on this site. This is a great day out for the whole family and it is FREE.

All participants walk in a clockwise direction only, this is to ease congestion and make the walk safer for all.

The Harbour Bridge and some surrounding roads will be closed from midnight till 1pm for Breakfast on the Bridge.
