Cincinnati's Brewery District Recieves Historical Marker

The Brewery District Community Urban Redevelopment Corporation (BDCURC) is reporting that a new Ohio Historical Marker honoring Cincinnati's brewing heritage has now been installed at 231 W McMicken Avenue, in front of Hanna Park.

The signage made its debut on April 11 during a groundbreaking for BDCURC's $3 million The Clyffside condominium project.

In the future, BDCURC is planning additional, smaller brewery-inspired signage for various locations throughout the district.

At the height of production, a majority of the City's 36 breweries operated in Over-the-Rhine and the West End.

The Brewery District area of Over-the-Rhine now contains the majority of the remaining structures of those brewery complexes.

Flying Dog Will Grow through Word of Mouth

I had a great meeting with a very smart marketer - Neal Stewart from Flying Dog Brewery. We connected in his hometown of Denver where he was nice enough to take me out to the premier joint for craft brews in LoDo.

He gets word of mouth and so do his customers - he wants the beer bloggers to talk about the brand. While I am sure he would love to have them buy cases, that's not the point. He needs lots of WOM to raise awreness and get more people to try and buy.
Neal is fundamentally acclimated for innovation - he is trying new things all of the time. he is courageous by necessity (no $10m ad buy to save him!)
He has a small and nimble team - there is no bureaucracy of the big org to slow him down. He just does stuff and learns from each experience.

Watermelon with Sweet Balsamic Syrup and Fresh Mint

Recipe courtesy Dave Lieberman

Episode:	Brewery Picnic

1/2 cup good balsamic vinegar
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup water
1/2 large watermelon
6 fresh mint leaves, julienned

Combine balsamic, sugar and water in saucepan. Heat over medium-high heat and reduce slightly until syrup consistency, about 12 minutes. Cool to room temperature.

Cut up watermelon in wedges. Drizzle cooled balsamic syrup over watermelon. Garnish with mint.

Chagrin Falls Mill Slated for Exciting Renovation Project

CHAGRIN FALLS -- There will be new life for the 167-year-old mill on the Chagrin River here, as local developers plan to turn it into a combination 10-room inn-restaurant-theater and local brewery with a "brewed in Chagrin Falls" label.

Channel 3 News has confirmed that Pittsburgh-based Alcoa Inc., the current owner of the property, announced today that it has reached an agreement to sell the former Ivex paper mill property to Spillway LLC, a development group led by three Chagrin Falls residents -- developer Bob Darden of The Darden Group; Darren Wyville; and Chagrin Falls Firefighter Bill Phillips.

The group plans to preserve and renovate as many of the existing 28 buildings in the complex as they can.

In all, at least five separate businesses are proposed for the 50,000-square-foot buildings that will be saved, including some retail development.

As billions are going down the drain in Iraq, this wild misadventure is destroying the once strong U.S. dollar.

Economic vultures all over the world delight in seeing what was once the world's economic super power's financial stability being demolished.

Foreigners are buying out major assets as the dollar dramatically declines. Belgium may buy the biggest brewery in the U.S. In 2007 foreign investors spent $414 billion buying some of the biggest assets of the U.S.A.

There is even talk now of the New York City landmark Chrysler Building being sold.

Glancing back at the Vietnam War, which cost the lives of over 59,000 U.S. service personnel, and over 2.5 million Vietnamese and Cambodians, historians have asked in countless Vietnam books -What was the Vietnam War fought for and precisely what was accomplished?

Is Iraq a re-run?

Don't blame the international currency traders for contemplating this possibility. Blame Bush!

With the United States the target of anti-war demonstrators' anger, France's President Chirac has declared that despite his differences with the US, he still loves the country. And when you look at it, there are hundreds of things the US has done for us.

With London peace protesters toting effigies of President George Bush and placards lambasting the United States, Prime Minister Tony Blair has warned of the dangers of anti-Americanism.

Even France's Jacques Chirac - a one-time Harvard student and forklift driver at a US brewery - has said his fierce criticism of Washington does not lessen his fond regard for America as a nation.

Has the current tide of anti-Americanism blinded many to the United States' many positive contributions?

WEED, CALIF. -- -- This town is in a tempest over a bottle top.

The federal government is telling the owner of a small brewery here that the pun he's placed on caps of his Weed Ales crosses a line.

"Try Legal Weed," the caps joke.

The U.S. Treasury Department's Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau says those three little words allude to marijuana use.

Vaune Dillmann, owner of Mt. Shasta Brewing Co., says he was just trying to grab attention for his beers and this tough-luck place in the morning shadow of Mt. Shasta.

The bureau's bureaucrats have told Dillmann he needs to stop using the "Try Legal Weed" bottle caps. If he doesn't, he could risk fines or sanctions. His worst fear: being forced out of business.

"This is ludicrous, bizarre, like meeting Big Brother face-to-face," he grumbled recently. "Forget freedom of speech and the 1st Amendment. They are the regulatory gods, a judge and jury all rolled into one. This is a life-or-death issue for my business."

DUBLIN, Ireland — Guinness beer owner Diageo PLC rattled an Irish icon Friday, announcing plans to lay off more than half of its brewery workers, close two breweries and shift most beer production to a new, high-tech plant in the Dublin suburbs by 2013

The British beverage company decided not to close the landmark Guinness brewery, one of Dublin's oldest businesses and a top tourist attraction, after concluding this would do too much damage to its brand image and customer sentiment.

Half of the riverside St. James' Gate site will be sold for private development, and the volume of Guinness brewed there will be cut by about a third _ to about 500 million pints annually. This will exclusively supply the Irish and British markets, where demand has slipped over the past decade in line with pubgoers' diversifying tastes

A Wisconsin brewery is tapping into a subculture "it didn't know existed" to promote its Nude Beach Summer Wheat beer, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Joe Martino, Stevens Point Brewery operating partner, tells the newspaper his company came up with the name during a brainstorming session.

The name drew immediate inquiries from the American Association for Nude Recreation.

Now Martino will provide 25 cases of Nude Beach -- described as a wheat beer with a "full-bodied, yet smooth and creamy" taste -- for the group's convention in Michigan in return for some ads in the group's member publications.

Martino is excited about the exposure but says he won't attend: "I might have attended 20 years ago, when my body was in better shape."

Nude Beach Summer Wheat is the latest seasonal beer launched by Stevens Point Brewery, which has launched three other seasonal craft brews over the past year. The ale's name popped up during a brain-storming session, said the brewery's operating partner, Joe Martino.

"We decided to have a fanciful name," Martino said. That's a common marketing gimmick used in the brewing industry, where you don't even have to leave Wisconsin to find colorfully named beers such as Louie's Demise, Spotted Cow and Bitter Woman.

The beer's label features a nude beach scene - although the beachgoers have their naughty bits covered by such objects as a surfboard, towel and volleyball. The full monty would have not amused the federal regulators who approve beer labels, Martino said.
