Celebrity Cruises are big supporters of breast cancer causes and have a vey special relationship with Walk the Walk. We are pleased to annouce our new and very exciting challenge to celebrate the launch of our latest ship Celebrity Eclipse, based in Southampton next summer.

Saturday 24th April 2010 will be a day to get everybody excited…there will be a 5K and 10k SunWalk challenge and just by entering you have the opportunity to be put into a draw to win a place at the two day naming ceremony onboard our wonderful ship. Soy estrogens and breast cancer: Researcher offers overview

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Are soy products healthy additions to a person’s diet, safe alternatives to hormone-replacement therapy or cancer-causing agents? The answer, according to University of Illinois food science and human nutrition professor William Helferich, is, “It depends.”

“The resolution of this paradox may lie in the timing of estrogen administration,” Helferich said. Exposure to genistein, an estrogen, before puberty causes mammary gland differentiation. “A differentiated cell undergoes less proliferation and therefore is less likely to progress through the cancer process,” he said. “However, if the estrogen is administered to an animal after the development of an estrogen-responsive tumor, the growth of this tumor will be stimulated,” he said.

Your body is probably home to a chemical called bisphenol A, or BPA. It’s a synthetic estrogen that United States factories now use in everything from plastics to epoxies — to the tune of six pounds per American per year. That’s a lot of estrogen.

More than 92 percent of Americans have BPA in their urine, and scientists have linked it — though not conclusively — to everything from breast cancer to obesity, from attention deficit disorder to genital abnormalities in boys and girls alike.

Consumer Reports magazine tested an array of brand-name canned foods for a report in its December issue and found BPA in almost all of them.

The BPA in the food probably came from an interior coating used in many cans.

“The vast majority of independent scientists — those not working for industry — are concerned about early-life low-dose exposures to BPA,”

All said mammograms were still important — after all, breast cancer kills 40,000 women a year in this country — but they differed about who really needed them and how often. All agreed that research was badly needed to figure out how to tell dangerous tumors from the so-called indolent ones…

Dr. Formenti said the emphasis on screening by groups like the cancer society might have misled the public into thinking that screening could prevent cancer. “It’s a giant misconception,” she said. “…I have to confess that I’m happy if the public gets offended or infuriated” by the debate…"I want taxpayers to say: ‘You have no clarity. Study it. Stop telling us you are a good girl if you get a mammogram.’ ”

Here we go again. Another study raises questions about the benefits of mammograms, and another set of confusing statements issue forth from experts.
Last month, Dr. Otis Brawley, the American Cancer Society’s chief medical officer, told The New York Times that the medical profession had exaggerated the benefits of cancer screening, and that if a woman refused mammography, “I would not think badly of her, but I would like her to get it.”
Then, the cancer society issued a statement saying women over 40 should keep having mammograms every year, because seven studies have shown that the test decreases the risk of death from breast cancer.
But the statement also said mammography can “miss cancers that need treatment, and in some cases finds disease that does not need treatment.” In other words, the test may lead to some women being treated, and being exposed to serious side effects, for cancers that would not have killed them.

Carly Fiorina Enters California Senate Race to Unseat Barbara Boxer

True to her word, she wasted no time going directly after Boxer. "Sometimes I wonder whether California even has two U.S. Senators," Fiorina said. "There's Dianne Feinstein and then there's...what's her name?"

Fiorina charged that during Boxer's 17 years in Washington, she had passed only three pieces of legislation and written two fiction novels. "What do you say we work together to give Barbara Boxer the chance next year to be a full-time novelist?"

The Boxer campaign responded immediately to the assertion that Boxer had not produced meaningful legislation in the Senate. "Fiorina is just plain wrong about the Boxer record. More than 1,000 of Senator Boxer's provisions have been adopted and enacted into law," the campaign said in a statement.

Carly Fiorina, the former CEO of technology giant Hewlett-Packard, announced her campaign for the U.S. Senate Wednesday. Her entry into the race as a business-oriented, moderate Republican immediately raised the stakes in the 2010 California Senate contest in both the primary, which will include conservative assemblyman Chuck DeVore, as well as the general election contest against incumbent Democrat Barbara Boxer.

Speaking to supporters in Orange County, Fiorina promised to use her business expertise to create jobs, cut government waste, stop out-of-control federal spending and trim the national deficit. "Let's start with living within our own means. The rest of us do, why shouldn't Washington?" she said.

Fiorina was diagnosed with breast cancer nine months ago and mentioned her close-cropped hair before starting her speech. "Let me answer the question, what's with the hair?" she said. "After surgery and chemotherapy, breast cancer is officially behind me.

SCIENTISTS have come a step closer to destroying breast cancer cells without killing healthy cells.

Experts around the globe are looking at a range of ways to do this, including new drugs and special lasers.

But now a team in Israel has demonstrated that a drugs therapy already shown to work in genetic breast cancer may also kill other breast cancer cells without damaging healthy ones.

A paper in the journal Breast Cancer Research reveals the drugs can block an enzyme that all cells need to thrive.

However, a team led by Professor Cohen-Armon of Tel-Aviv University found that cancer cells seem more reliant on this enzyme, known as PARP, than other cells.

The team hope the discovery will one day work on other cancers and British research led by Dr Alan Ashworth suggests the drugs may in fact work on a far wider number of cancers.

But he stresses that tests have so far been carried out only on mice and treatment is a long way off.

Twelve Mormon moms are putting modesty aside and becoming calendar girls -- all in the name of raising breast cancer research dollars.

"Hot Mormon Muffins" features the "Devout Dozen" -- moms touting recipes alongside revealing outfits and suggestive poses. The calendars cost $15.99.

As expected, the calendar has raised concern in the Mormon community.

Tami Roberts is "Miss May" and says she sees no reason for her church to be upset.

"We're not all in a stereotype, we're not all the same. And I'm not a stereotypical Mormon for sure," Roberts said.

She doesn't believe posing for the calender is a violation of her faith, but instead a way to challenge the misconceptions of her religion.

New Test Gives Women Faster Breast Cancer Results

There's nothing more nerve-wracking for a woman than when she's told there's a suspicious spot on her mammogram.

The patient either has to have a biopsy to figure out whether it's cancer... or wait six months and come back for a repeat mammogram.

But now Lahey Hospital is offering a new alternative that can tell women them right away whether or not they have cancer.

a new breast gamma imaging procedure called breast scintigraphy.

Doctors inject a radioactive substance into a patient, then use a specialized high-resolution camera to take pictures of the breast. It enables them to see so-called "hot spots" where cancer is present.

Dr. Betsy Angelakis, Director of Breast Imaging at Lahey Clinic explains, "It allows us to look through very cloudy or dense breast tissue or areas of concern to see if cancer cells are there."

And instead of having to wait days or weeks to find out, patients get the results right away

The big loser in the cancer funding race is lung cancer. It is the biggest cancer killer in the country, yet on a per-death basis receives the least N.C.I. funding among major cancers. In 2006, the N.C.I. spent $1,518 for each new case of lung cancer and $1,630 for each lung cancer death, according to data from the institute and the American Cancer Society.

it is becoming increasingly clear that cancers require more than mutations to progress. They need the cooperation of surrounding cells and even, he said, “the whole organism, the person,” whose immune system or hormone levels, for example, can squelch or fuel a tumor.

But knowing more about how tumors develop and sometimes reverse course might help doctors decide which tumors can be left alone and which need to be treated, something that is now not known in most cases.
