Scientists catch cells in the act of remembering

Scientists have for the first time recorded individual brain cells in the act of summoning a spontaneous memory, revealing not only where a remembered experience is registered but how the brain is able to re-create it.

The recordings, taken from the brains of epilepsy patients being prepared for surgery, demonstrate that these spontaneous memories reside in some of the very same neurons that fired most furiously when the recalled event was first experienced. Researchers had long theorized that this was the case but until now had only indirect evidence.

The new study, experts said, has all but closed the case: Remembering, for the brain, is a lot like doing.

The revolutionary surgery was carried out at Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital to destroy a brain tumor that wasn't responding to conventional treatment. Drilling a hole in somebody's skull and piping laser destruction into it, on the other hand, definitely counts as "unconventional treatment" and destroyed the tumor.

A laser's ability to vaporise things is widely known - thanks to movies it was known long before it was actually true. But in medical applications the trick isn't blowing things up, but convincing the laser to stop burning things up in a precisely controlled way. In this case fiber optic cabling (like copper wire for light) was used to direct the laser to the correct location, and constant Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) allowed surgeons to monitor its progress on a screen - like a very expensive videogame. And you only get one life.

Unbelievably, this incredible example of genuine Mad Science converted to humanitarian efforts is running out of funding. Apparently people think "curing brain cancer" isn't important enough for a few million dollars of funding. (Note: America alone spends four billion dollars a year on cat food.)

We can only hope that somebody official gets their act together and budgets for some more research

Senator Edward Kennedy unleashed high emotions and a surge of adrenalin on the opening night of Barack Obama's nominating convention by delivering a powerful speech in Denver less than two months after having brain surgery for a malignant brain tumour.

The liberal lion of the Democratic party and brother of the late John F Kennedy reduced many in Denver's Pepsi Centre to tears with a powerful call to arms on behalf of Mr Obama, after a day in which there were doubts that his dire health would allow him to even take the stage. The original plan had been for him simply to watch a filmed tribute to his life and legislative achievements in the US Senate, where he has served since 1962.

Retrolabyrinthine Balance (Vestibular) Nerve Section

This surgery is designed to preserve hearing. This procedure requires general anesthesia and a one week hospitalization. An incision is made behind the ear and the mastoid air cells removed. An opening is made in the posterior fossa dura (brain covering) and the eighth cranial nerve (hearing and balance) is identified behind the inner ear. The balance portion of the nerve is identified and selectively cut.

The immediate postoperative period is similar to a labyrinthectomy. (see "Labyrinthectomy" for more details)

There is a chance of developing a spinal fluid leak or meningitis. There is a 5% chance of total deafness in the affected ear. Temporary facial weakness or paralysis is rare but may last for several days, weeks or even months. It generally resolves completely.

Nurses posts brain surgery pictures on Facebook

A nurse posted photos of herself clutching a lump of human flesh beside a patient having a brain operation for her Facebook page.

Her job at a hospital in Stockholm is now at risk after she put 14 photos from a brain surgery and a back operation to her account on the popular social networking site.

One showed the operating assistant holding indeterminate parts of the patient's body.

Cameras are banned from operating theatres unless they are intended as teaching aids for students. It appears that the nurse, who is unnamed for legal reasons, used her mobile phone.

The woman, who has been suspended, is said to be "devastated" by her actions. It seems she wanted to impress her friends with her high powered job.

It is not the first time that Facebook has got employees into trouble.

Last month Crystal Palace footballer Ashley-Paul Robinson embarrassed his club when he posted a message on the site saying he was having a trial with Fulham FC.

Nurse suspended for brain surgery Facebook photos

A Swedish nurse has been suspended from her job after she used the camera from her mobile phone to take pictures of a brain surgery operation she was participating in. She then posted the pictures to her Facebook account.

She was apparently trying to impress her Facebook friends with her cool job - “look I’m staring straight at someone’s brain! That beats you flipping burgers any day of the week!”

Needless to say, the hospital where she worked totally flipped out and suspended her. The photos have apparently been removed from the Facebook account and she is said to be “devastated”.

How did she think this scenario was going to play out? With a big fat promotion and pay raise? Plus the surgeons who stood there and watched her take the pictures should be disciplined too - and that doesn’t even begin to address the lawsuit possibilities when the patient finds out that his brain was on a social network!

Sharper and more accurate than any surgeon's knife, the physicists' scalpel is composed of invisible hydrogen or helium atoms that have been stripped of their electrons and accelerated in cyclotrons to form particle beams of very high energy.

The process has found its widest use in brain surgery to correct conditions that would otherwise be inoperable because they involve areas that cannot be reached without damage to important surrounding tissue.

The technique is still rare, however, because very few cyclotrons are available for medical use, according to Dr. Raymond Kjellberg, who pioneered the use of proton beam surgery at Massachussets General Hospital in Boston. But he said he hoped the required machinery could eventually be made small enough, and portable enough, so that surgeons around the country could use the technique.

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (CNN) -- One night last spring, Conor Mather-Licht was celebrating the end of his freshman year in college. Out to dinner with friends, he started to read the menu, but couldn't.

Conor Mather-Licht, 19, lies awake during surgery to remove a brain tumor.

He saw the pictures, and the words, but he just couldn't comprehend what was in front of him. The feeling lasted just a moment, but he knew something was wrong.

When he returned home to Indianapolis, Indiana, a few days later, he mentioned the episode to this parents. They took him to the doctor immediately. The diagnosis wasn't good.

Because the tumor was located in a very delicate area of the brain, his surgeon recommended a procedure called "awake craniotomy with mapping." It's much like standard brain surgery, with one critical difference: The patient is awake.

clipper's remarks: July 17, 2008...my granddaughter had brain surgery to rid her of seizures that she has been having for the last 4 years...they got so bad she wasn't able to go to school. Her medication could not keep them under control.
It all started out as what everyone though was a cold or the flu...she contracted viral encephalitis , they don't know how or why.
All I could think of to do at the time was ask everyone to pray for her and that's how the story ended up on MySpace...
Except for one seizure last Tuesday, she seems to be doing well...

Surgery taking place in Chapel Hill, NC (UNC)

Hannah was taken into surgery at 1:40 pm...

I've been making things with Hannah's pictures like the one below...to thank everyone for their prayers.

I know Hannah appreciates all the prayers for her and I told her this morning just what I was doing.

She said " Thank you grandma, I love you." and was out the door...

I've been numb ever since...I don't even feel like calling anyone right now.

Hannah is out of surgery, doctors say everthing went well.

She is taken to the ICU and her mother has not seen her yet.

We still have a while to go before we can relax, but I know with your prayers she will be well.

Thanks again from the bottom of my heart, to all for your friendship and prayers.

Everthing seems to be working, though they have her drugged fairly well and she isn't talking.

Stomach-shrinking operations have captured the headlines recently, with the post-operative death in June of 29-year-old Suzanne Murphy, who wanted to lose weight so she could play with her young son,

The numbers having NHS stomach surgery leapt by 41 per cent between 2006 and 2007.

But amid the rush to slim by scalpel, doctors and patients are ignoring the fact that it isn't an easy cheat

“If you are eating because of a need in your brain rather than a need for stomach satiety signals, having your stomach reduced is not going to solve that,”

But given the psychiatric evidence, it may be wiser to consider carefully the long-term emotional fallout from all these operations - and to develop effective ways of preventing it before weighing in with even more.

Engineers at the University of Texas at Austin have patented a laser microscalpel that allows a surgeon to operate on tissue one cell at a time, precisely targeting disease while leaving healthy surrounding cells alive.

The device combines two technologies--a femtosecond laser and two-photon fluorescence microscopy--into a single miniaturized, flexible probe. The probe can target single cells in three-dimensional space, penetrating up to 250 micrometers into tissue.

The probe could be a significant advance for endoscopic surgery that requires high precision, such as destroying cancer cells scattered throughout brain tissue or operating on delicate tissue like vocal cords

Imagine sitting in your home and being able to control a device in a different room, a different city or even a different country by thought alone. Sounds impossible doesn’t it? Well, accordingly to this fascinating article from Popular Mechanics, advances in the field of cybernetics are occurring so rapidly that such things may be possible in the not-too-distant future.

Consider this: a monkey in North Carolina can already send a signal to Japan (where it controls a robot) faster than it can send a message from its brain to its own muscles. One immediate practical application of this technology may occur in the field of surgery whereby a surgeon could control a small robotic device faster and more precisely than she could move her hand. In a field like brain surgery such a distinction could make a big difference.

Shona Robertson-Holmes was a mess. She had crushing headaches, insomnia and adrenaline levels so high that she constantly felt as if she had just stepped in front of a speeding bus. And that’s not to mention her rapidly deteriorating eyesight.

She headed to her family doctor, who recommended that she see two specialists.

But Robertson-Holmes is Canadian, and her state-provided health care gave her a wait time of four months to see a neurologist and six months to see an endocrinologist. Unable to get an expedited appointment, and with her eyesight worsening, Robertson-Holmes called the Mayo Clinic in Arizona and went in for tests and a diagnosis within a week.

The doctors there told her she had a four-to-six-week window to have a marble-sized tumor on her pituitary gland removed before her vision loss would be irreversible.

Returning home with the diagnosis, the Ontario native was still unable to expedite the surgery. Three weeks later, she came back to Mayo for brain surgery.
