Botany of an Antarctic Voyage (1847)

(Sir) Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817-1911) came from an eminent family of naturalists and botanists and developed a passion for plants early in life, when, from the age of seven, he attended lectures given by his father on botany at Glasgow University. Travel stories that he heard as a child, particularly those related to the voyages of Captain Cook, would prove equally influential in the trajectory of Dalton's career.

After completing his medical training, Hooker signed on to the position of Assistant Surgeon aboard HMS Erebus. The Erebus and HMS Terror, under the command of renowned polar explorer, Captain James Clark Ross, left Britain in 1839 on a three year expedition - the last major voyage of discovery powered by sail alone - attempting to locate the south magnetic pole.

Hello, it's a new species of Pacific iguana

A new species of Pacific iguana has been uncovered by Australian and US researchers, but already its future is looking grim.

In a paper published online in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B, the team shows there are three living species of Brachylophus iguanas, not two as indicated in current taxonomy.

The new species is named Brachylophus bulabula after the Fijian word for hello.

"In the reptile world the Fijian iguanas are iconic," says lead author Associate Professor Scott Keogh, of the Australian National University's School of Botany and Zoology.

"To discover a new species of them is very exciting."

But he says the new species and its cousins are under threat from habitat loss and attacks by feral cats and mongooses.

Two species of the iguana are already extinct, having been eaten out of existence about 2800 years ago by the earliest arrivals on the island, Keogh says.

Um britânico foi preso sob suspeita de ter feito uma série de ataques sexuais a ovelhas, disse a polícia londrina nesta sexta-feira (18).

O homem de 27 anos foi preso em sua residência em Dulwich, no sul de Londres. Ele também era procurado por posse de drogas com a intenção de traficar. Detetives disseram que a prisão veio depois de acusações feitas contra ele em maio e junho.

"Dois homens disseram que viram um homem molestando as ovelhas em um campo, enquanto corriam em Botany Bay Lane, em Chislehurst", afirmou a polícia em nota. "Um incidente semelhante foi reportado à polícia por um empregado de um estábulo na área."

Segundo informações da imprensa o homem havia sido proibido de visitar áreas rurais enquanto as autoridades conduziam a investigação.

The Medieval News blog printed a press release in relation to Oxford University's Bodleian Library and the institutional subscription site, ARTstor (announcement), whereby some 24,000 manuscript images are being made available to subscribers.

Additionally, a proportion of these images is accessible by the general public. While I was actively looking through this very impressive collection, the number of images available actually increased from 7,500 to over 8000.

I have so far only scanned through about 2000 of these

selection is a fair cross section of the types of material available. Perhaps 15% of the images concentrate on initials and margin motifs. There are Book of Hours, bestiaries, alphabet forms and calligraphy, astronomy and astrology, medical anatomy/botany, building drawings, miniatures and the very occasional binding

Day to Day, June 18, 2008 · In the early 1940s, Harvard botanist Richard Evans Schultes went exploring in the Colombian Amazon. He returned not only with scientific research, but also with art.

Schultes' photos offer hypnotic insights into his journey through the Amazon.

There, amid the untamed life — colorful birds, enormous insects, otherwordly plants — he found beauty in the human form. His big, soft-focused photographs, now on display at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, offer hypnotic insights into the expedition that gave birth to the field of ethnobotany.

Throughout his 12 years in lands where no naturalist had gone before, Schultes became captivated by the connection between botany and people. Although the U.S. government initially sent him in search of rubber, he focused his studies on how remote tribal people used flowers and vines for medicinal and hallucinogenic purposes.

'Suicide' Plant Hailed As Botanical Wonder

The 'suicide' palm tree

A 70ft-tall plant that commits suicide when it blooms has been discovered in a remote region of Madagascar.

Scientists say the spectacular giant palm introduces an entirely new family of species, making it one of the botanical wonders of the world.

The palm sprouts a 70ft-long spire of tiny flowers once in its lifetime, dripping with nectar to beckon a host of pollinating insects.

After blooming and fruiting, the plant's nutrient resources are completely exhausted, causing it to collapse and die. Although the palm flowers fatally just once, no one knows how long it lives.

Almost as remarkable is the fact that scientists have not found it until now.

Standing at up to 65ft, with a spread of at least 30ft, the giant palm is in fact large enough to be visible on Google Earth.

clipper's remarks: In fact, in 1893 the Supreme Court of the United Stated curiously decreed the tomato a vegetable, although recognizing that botanically speaking it is a fruit. This unusual declaration was based on the existence of an 1883 tariff that charged ten percent on imported vegetables, including tomatoes. A frustrated tomato importer decided to challenge the tariff, arguing that tomatoes were actually a fruit and thus should be excluded from the vegetable tariff. The Supreme Court agreed that tomatoes were botanically a fruit, but argued that they were commonly grown in kitchen gardens with vegetables and treated as vegetables in markets and American households. In other words, the United States Government wanted its tariff money—the heck with botany!

Fruits are botanically defined as the reproductive part of a plant that forms from the fertilization of an ovum. Fruits generally contain seeds inside some kind of covering, although some fruits like strawberries grow their seeds on the outside. If you want to get technical, though, tomatoes are really “berries,” and strawberries are actually “brambles!” Confused? Check out this site about fruits and vegetables.

The term “vegetable” is more of a popular term than a botanical one. Vegetables don’t contain seeds and include non-productive parts of plants including roots, stalks, leaves, etc. Given the botanical definition mentioned above, tomatoes are a fruit, although they are more popularly considered a vegetable.
