That’s where personal-fitness guru Bull Busch comes in. His passion for fitness is contagious, prompting even the laziest of couch potatoes to try on those jogging shoes collecting dust on the closet floor. In his podcast, Busch breaks away from the pack of exercise teachers by cracking the code of the body-mass-index chart, analyzing the mechanics of physical repetitions and flaunting his intimate knowledge of the human body. He addresses the physical weaknesses of individual clients and prescribes exercises based on Muscle Activation Techniques, a relatively new method for physical training.

Tags: fitness, health, nutrition, time, out, chicago, busch, muscle, activation, technique

<clipSource>http://www.timeout.com/chicago/articles/time-in/27346/radio-podcasts</clipSource>

5 Health Calculators You Dont Use, But Should

clipped by: missjackson

Clip Source: www.alobravo.com

1. Dr. Sears Body Fat Calculator

browse through the Zone forums, and read the threads or ask questions on how to get started.

Please keep in mind that the Body Mass Index Calculator is just an estimate of ideal weight. There are other factors to consider and everyone is different. So don't use this method as a true way of determining your ideal weight. It only gives you an approximate average. Consult your physician for any questions.

Divide your weight in pounds by 2.2. This will give you your weight in kilograms.

Divide your height in inches by 39.4. This will give you your height in meters.

Now square that number. Example: (65" divided by 39.4=1.65)(1.65x1.65=2.72)

Divide weight number by the height number squared. That is your BMI.

Below 18: Underweight to Anorexic
19 to 27: Healthy
28 to 39: Overweight

40 and up: Severe Obesity

The BMI chart gives you your BMI, which is a number that comes from using a calculation based on a person’s weight and height. BMI is a good indicator of body "fatness" even though it doesn’t measure it directly (as gyms and physicians do with body fat assessment tools). Finding out your BMI is an excellent method of screening for possible weight issues that can cause health problems. According to the BMI chart results, anyone with a BMI over 25 would be determined to be overweight and a BMI over 30 would be obese.

Now comes word from scientists that skimping on sleep may make a person fat.

According to a study at Eastern Virginia Medical School, people who sleep just 16 fewer minutes per night than the average person are significantly at risk of being overweight. As inconsequential as those moments sound, it adds up to nearly two hours of lost sleep per week. After controlling for other lifestyle and health factors, researchers calculated that missing two hours of sleep each week is associated with a 10-point increase in body mass index—or the difference between a healthy weight and obesity.

Tags: "sleep deprivation ", sleep, "sleep disorders", immunity, diabetes

<clipSource>http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/index.php?term=pto-3919.html&fromMod=emailed</clipSource>

BMI Formula

clipped by: nanopika

Clip Source: www.freebmicalculator.net

Metric Units: BMI = Weight (kg) / (Height (m) x Height (m))

As my colleague Norimitsu Onishi explains in today’s Times, a Japanese law that came into effect two months ago requires companies and local governments to measure the waistlines of Japanese adults. The government limits are 33.5 inches for men and 35.4 inches for women. Those who exceed the standard and also have another weight-related health concern are given “dieting guidance” to drop weight. Brutal Bridal Boot Camp

clipped by: merrie
clipper's remarks: First we're all measured and weighed. I'm here for one reason only - to look my best in my wedding photos. However, my BMI (Body Mass Index) is just about spot on as I'm 5ft 3in and 8 stone, so I'm told I might struggle, having less excess fat to draw on for energy.

dinner is made up of strictly controlled (ie meagre) portions of soup, a small piece of salmon and a few strips of vegetable. The hard work starts tomorrow with circuit training on the lawn at 6am sharp. I turn in feeling hungry and anxious.

Standing on the scales on the final morning, I've lost five pounds, and an inch from my thighs and hips. One of the other girls has lost a whopping 12 pounds and dropped not one, but two dress sizes.

The Camp gave me the bridal body I had hoped for, and equipped me with the know-how to stay trim well into my married life. But most impressive of all, I survived the week.

Clip Source: www.telegraph.co.uk

For most women, walking up the aisle is the ultimate red carpet moment - and the pressure to look amazing is immense. When I got married this year, that not only meant having immaculate hair and make-up, and a dress to die for, but a honed, super-toned body, too.

But drastic measures were needed to whittle my wobbly bits into shape before the big day. A friend recommended The Camp, an intense, seven-day residential course in Galloway, south-west Scotland, which promises to help women - many of them brides-to-be, it turns out - to lose a dress size.

Boot campers are woken up early, spend eight hours a day on team exercises with ex-Special Forces instructors, and endure nightly boxing classes - a disciplined routine designed to kickstart a sluggish metabolism and put the body into its fat-burning zone.

The thing is, I'm more Private Benjamin than GI Jane. Subcutaneous fat removed to the abdomen triggered body weight and fat mass losses, and a decrease in blood sugar levels. The rodents also got more responsive to insulin, the hormone controlling the way in which the body metabolizes sugar. Insulin resistance triggers the type 2 diabetes. When visceral fat was placed to other body regions, it induced no effect.

Clip Source: news.softpedia.com

We are told that an increased Body Mass Index (BMI) makes us prone to a large array of diseases. But, as it turns out, fat located under the skin, especially on the buttocks, seems to actually decrease the chances of developing type 2 diabetes, as signaled by a new research published in the Cell Metabolism journal and carried out at The Harvard Medical School.
