Same Old, Same Old at Fort Hood

This attack was the rule, not the exception.

Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan is accused of murdering last week 13 people (12 of whom were soldiers) and wounding another 30 at Fort Hood, Texas. It was not the first, nor will it be the last, domestic terrorist incident since Sept. 11, 2001.

We now see that authorities had, or should have had, reason to be suspicious of Hasan — including his contact with a radical cleric and a bizarre “medical” presentation he once gave to Army doctors that focused on Islam and the military.

Now, we’re also learning that someone going by the name Nidal Hasan posted extremist views on the Internet, and that at least one former classmate questioned his loyalty to America.

Yet no one acted.

Was, as there appears to be, a fear among would-be accusers of being charged with politically incorrect bias?

At first, they dismissed it as a childish fantasy, but began taking it seriously during a trip to a monastery in Mysore, southern India.At one point, he went into a trance in which he described a celebrated Buddhist monastery with a 35ft dragon on the roof.

The disappointments started early this decade. For years there had been rumblings about an impending IT meltdown due to the widespread (and rather short-sighted) abbreviation of years into two digits.

As media scaremongers counted down to the apocalyptic ’00 switchover, the Millenium Bug hype ramped up considerably and, as I remember it, people began stockpiling tins of analogue food and steam-powered hair straighteners in a desperate bid to stave off the annihilation of civilisation.

Non seulement ça ressemble à du suif, mais en plus ça doit avoir le même goût ! En plus de cela, c'est hyper salé, impossible d'avaler ce truc sans ressentir de la nausée. Et le goût reste en bouche même après un brossage vigoureux. Conclusion de cette première expérience : la Vegemite est une invention du diable, les Australiens sont des tarés, leurs papilles sont définitivement perdues pour la cause. Pas étonnant que ce truc ne se soit jamais imposé en-dehors de leurs frontières. Même les Anglais et les Américains n'en veulent pas, c'est dire. Franchement, cette chose devrait être interdite par la Convention de Genève. D'ailleurs, je suis sûr qu'ils en font bouffer aux prisonniers irakiens pour les faire parler, ça doit être plus efficace que la gégène.

Review: Mary And Max

Mary Dinkle is a lonely, chubby 8 year old girl with a weird birthmark on her forhead. She’s awkward and lonely and has no friends in her hometown of Melbourne, Australia, so she starts up a penpal relationship with a name she picks out of the phonebook.

Anyone who enjoyed director Adam Elliot’s previous Oscar-winning short Harvie Krumpet will find a lot to love here too. Max seems to almost be a most extreme version of poor tourettes sufferer Harvie, in fact, and from what I understand of Elliot’s other work it’s all peppered with socially awkward individuals trying to figure out why everything in the world seems so bizarre to them.

World Mountain Bike Bog Snorkelling Championships

A bizarre aquatic race whereby someone in full wetsuit and snorkel pedals an expensive mountain bike into a filthy bog just outside the small Welsh town of Llanwrtyd Wells (pronounced like the sound of a slop bucket hitting the floor) for reasons science isn't fully equipped to explain.

Entrants are timed as they cycle two lengths of the Waen Rhydd bog, which is 6-feet deep and 45-feet long, on a bicycle with a frame filled with lead. Toppling off your bike isn't penalized, and neither is vomiting from the fetid stench.

The sport draws competitors to Llanwrytd Wells from all over the world, but we think that may be because the Welsh citizenry mistakenly think every traveler with a chesty cough is asking directions to the town.

The sport began in 2000 and was developed from the similar, non-bike-related Bog Snorkelling Championships. Both were the brainchild of a local pub landlord, who dreamt it up after drinking a lot of booze.
