Balut seems to be on every "strange food" list, usually at the top, and for good reason. Though no longer wriggling on the plate like the live octopus in Korea, the fertilized duck or chicken egg with a nearly-developed embryo that is boiled and eaten in the shell is easily one of the strangest foods in the world. Balut is very common in the Philippines, Cambodia and Vietnam and usually sold by street vendors. It is said balut tastes like egg and duck (or chicken), which is essentially what it is. It is surprising to many that a food that appears so bizarre—often the with the bird's features clearly developed--can taste so banal. In the end, apparently everything does indeed, just taste like chicken.

Imagine, if you will, a world where your mother tells you to stay still when a bee flies up not because she's worried about you getting stung, but because the bee is on a mission. A mission to search you all over for bombs, contraband, what have you — anything it can sniff out.

Luckily for us, the little guys are securely taped down at the moment. A company called Inscentinel has been bribing bees with food to stick out their tongues when they detect certain smells. So far the bees have been trained to sniff out explosives, different drugs and foods as a camera keeps careful watch on whether or not their tongues pop out. Loaded onto a cartridge, the bees can be toted around in a handheld vapor detector and used in the field. If you keep looking at the picture above and worrying about the little detectors, Inscentinel reports on its site: "Bees are happy undertaking their sniffing tasks and are comfortable throughout, only healthy bees work effectively." — Kevin Hall

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Anything made by McDonald's tastes better, preschoolers said in a study that powerfully demonstrates how advertising can trick the taste buds of young children.

In comparing identical McDonald's foods in name-brand and plain wrappers, the unmarked foods always lost.

Even carrots, milk and apple juice tasted better to the kids when they were wrapped in the familiar packaging of the Golden Arches.

The study had youngsters sample identical McDonald's foods in name-brand and unmarked wrappers. The unmarked foods always lost the taste test.

"You see a McDonald's label and kids start salivating," said Diane Levin, a childhood development specialist who campaigns against advertising to kids. She had no role in the research.

Levin said it was "the first study I know of that has shown so simply and clearly what's going on with (marketing to) young children."

Man says he found snake head in a can of beans

Earl Hartman was a little rattled by something he says he found in a can of green beans: a snake head. The Philadelphia man said he found the inch-long head on his plate Wednesday night, right between a chicken breast and buttered noodles. He said it came out of the green bean can.

"When I sat down, I noticed something didn't look right," Hartman told WCAU-TV. "It didn't look like a green bean."

Hartman said he called the Pathmark store where he bought the beans, and got a call back from Seneca Foods in upstate New York, where the vegetables were canned.

Rich Savner, a spokesman for Carteret, N.J.-based Pathmark Stores Inc., confirmed that a customer reported finding a "foreign substance" in a can of green beans, but said officials had not determined what it was.

Organic food 'can add to allergies'

Parental trust in organic food could be a reason more children are suffering from allergies, an academic has suggested.

Jonathan O'B Hourihane, a professor of paediatrics, told peers yesterday that nearly half the population is now prone to allergies. But while many follow the accepted advice to eat a varied and fresh diet, it is the sheer variety of fresh foods now available that may be to blame for the prevalence of allergies.

"The impression that organic or exotic fresh food is better for children may by linked to the appearance of allergies to foods that would have appeared bizarre to previous generations," Prof O'B Hourihane said.

The professor, from University College Cork was addressing the Lords committee on science and technology. He stressed that allergic reactions can kill.

Around 20 million people in the Britain suffer from some form of food intolerance, according to a survey by the medical charity Allergy UK
