scrape
This is when a client sends a request to the tracker for information about the statistics of the torrent, like who to share the file with and how well those other users are sharing.

seed
a complete copy of the file being made available for download.

seeder/seeding
a peer that is done downloading a file and is now just making it available to others.

swarm
a group of seeds and peers sharing the same torrent.

torrent
generally, the instance of a file or group of files being distributed via BitTorrent.

torrent file
a file which describes what file or files are being distributed, where to find parts, and other info needed for the distribution of the file.

tracker
a server that keeps track of the peers and seeds in a swarm. A tracker does not have a copy of the file itself, but it helps manage the file transfer process.

What do all these different terms mean (seeder, tracker, peer, etc.)?

availability
The number of existing full copies of the file available to the client for downloading. The higher this number is, the potentially easier and quicker it can be to download the complete file (not accounting for other factors). If this number is less than one (for example, 0.65) then there is not a full copy of the file available to download.

block
A block is a piece of a file. When a file is distributed via BitTorrent, it is broken into smaller pieces, or blocks. Typically the block is 250kb in size, but it can vary with the size of the file being distributed. Breaking the file into pieces allows it to be distributed as efficiently as possible. Users get their files faster using less bandwidth.

iiNet case could set piracy precedent

The laws are cockeyed. In Australia, if you go to the pub, get pissed, drive and have an accident, you can sue the licensee of the pub. The govt will have already booked the licensee for selling to an intoxicated person.

A trial in Sydney could determine whether internet service providers (ISPs) can be held responsible for their users' pirated content.

One of Australia's largest ISPs, the Perth-based iiNet, is being sued by a consortium of film distribution companies.

The movie houses say the internet company has not been doing anything to stop its customers from illegally sharing movies and TV programs on the net.

But iiNet says if the movie company's demands are met, it would breach privacy laws and freedom of speech.

The case went before the Federal Court in Sydney this morning.

The entertainment companies compiled their evidence by hiring two investigators to subscribe to iiNet, to get accounts there and then begin trading files using different BitTorrent networks.

They kept track of what movies and TV shows they were sharing, when they downloaded them and the ID numbers of the computers they were sharing these files with.

If the 'I'm a Mac' ads are to be believed, one of the biggest selling points of the Apple computer is its supposed invulnerability to viruses, spyware, and other evil programs. Of course, those who follow these sorts of things know such a claim is misleading at best. OS X has seen a number of viruses and other nasties over the past several months, as the OS has gained popularity. And now Apple seems to finally be admitting, if rather quietly, that OS X is not quite immune to the Internet's more nefarious elements.

Intego, the company that broke the Snow Leopard anti-malware story, claims that the detection of the iServices Trojan won't work because Apple's software doesn't detect files downloaded through BitTorrent, just web browsers, e-mail clients and iChat. This seems hard to believe. It would be quite a blunder on Apple's part if true.

However, it seems that the tide is turning and these massive torrent sites are beginning to fall like dominos. Thepiratebay is on its deathbed, filelist.org has bitten the bullet, Suprnova went ages ago, and they keep on being taken down.

Every day it is getting harder to find those Bittorrent files and gradually everything is going underground. Maybe it is time to change you habit and ditch your BitTorrent addiction?

It found that the p2p users went to 34 percent more movies than regular ones, bought 34 percent more DVDs and also rented 24 percent more movies. Could it be that the ones that use file sharing do so precisely because they are more interested in media and entertainment content and, as such, also end up buying more than the average users?

Studies have shown in the past that file sharers also make good customers for the media companies, not that it has changed anything in the way the big companies approach the issue. Still, one more can't hurt, so here's yet another study that has found that users that engage in file sharing also purchase more DVDs, more media devices and are generally more engaged with entertainment content.

The Frank N. Magid Associates research firm was hired by peer-to-peer company Vuze, maker of the popular Java-based bittorrent client Vuze, formerly known as Azureus, to see if and how its users differentiated from the average Internet ones. While ordered by a p2p company, Mike Vorhaus, president of Magid Advisors, assures us that the results are not biased in any way. The study used a random sample of Vuze users and compared it with another one made up of regular Internet users aged 18 to 44.

In just a few days The Pirate Bay will be passed onto its new owners, marking the end of an era but not the end of BitTorrent. The nostalgic torrenters among us might want to download a copy of the site for archival purposes. It never hurts to have a backup of important data in place, especially when it’s free.

In common with music and movies, it’s not that hard to copy a website. It might take some serious server power to serve torrents to millions of people every day, but all the torrent files and site code don’t take up that much space.
