August 18, 2008—A fiery throated bird spotted in the jungles of Gabon several years ago (and pictured above) is a new African forest robin species, DNA studies prove.

The bird's distinguishing feature is its olive-colored backside, said John Gibbons

who noted that four other forest robin species have similar throat coloring.

Geneticists at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington, D.C., compared the newly identified bird's DNA to that of four known forest robins to establish the olive-backed forest robin as a separate species.

Smithsonian scientists noticed the bird—dubbed Stiphrornis pyrrholaemus or olive-backed forest thrush—while conducting the first ever biodiversity assessment of an oil-rich area in southeastern Gabon.

The discovery of new animal species is rarer these days than it used to be.

Brian Schmidt, the researcher who found the bird in Gabon, said in a press release that the discovery "is definitely a reminder that the world still holds surprises for us."

In a theory he calls organizational biomimetics, Thompson lays out the principles underlying nature's management strategies. So what can you learn from a bird or an ant? And you can put a number on the amount: At last week’s AOU meeting, I learned that existing wind-power plants typically kill about 1 to 12 birds per megawatt generated per year. (A megawatt can meet the electricity needs of roughly 1,000 Americans.)

Ken Otter’s task was to advise the Canadian power company about ways to get that number as low as possible. So he hauled out a mobile radar system to track birds as they flew over the steep-sided mountain ridges where the turbines would be built. Radars can’t identify bird species, so Otter also posted graduate students with binoculars to document what was flying over.

But after two years of study, Otter found bird movements tended to be fairly predictable.

Wind power will never be harmless to birds.

But climate change and pollution kill birds, too

<clipSource>http://birdsredesign.wordpress.com/2008/08/14/thursday-can-we-have-wind-power-and-birds-too/</clipSource>

New bird species discovered in Gabon

clipped by: JACraves

Clip Source: www.sciencedaily.com

Scientists at the Smithsonian Institution have discovered a new species of bird in Gabon, Africa, that was, until now, unknown to the scientific community.

The newly found olive-backed forest robin (Stiphrornis pyrrholaemus) was named by the scientists for its distinctive olive back and rump.

The bird was first observed by Smithsonian scientists in 2001 during a field expedition of the National Zoo's Monitoring and Assessment of Biodiversity Program in southwest Gabon. It was initially thought, however, to be an immature individual of an already-recognized species

These findings were published in the international science journal Zootaxa Aug. 15.

<clipSource>http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/08/080815130415.htm</clipSource>
