Her last story, “The Canary”, was completed in February 1922, and is, as Claire Tomalin rightly noted in her excellent biography (1988), “truly mawkish”. She seems to have decided that any future writing would depend on her success in healing herself. “I am at the end of my source for the time”, she writes to Murry. “Life has brought me no flow.”

The rush to embrace Truman tells us more about contemporary politics than about the realities of his career. Unlike Palin, as demonstrated by her interviews, Truman had schooled himself in history and biography. He was the only 20th-century president without a college degree, but he was better educated than most of his predecessors or successors. Moreover, by the time Truman got to the vice presidency in 1944, he was a seasoned politician who had served as the chief judge of Jackson County, which was equivalent to being the mayor of Kansas City, and had served 10 years in the U.S. Senate, where he won prominence as chairman of a subcommittee investigating wartime waste in industrial mobilization. It netted him a Time cover and accolades as one of the country's most accomplished civilian contributors to victory in World War II.

A Catholic nun, Sister Alphonsa, has been made India's first female saint, at an event presided over by Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican.

The canonisation was greeted with delight by Christians in the southern Indian state of Kerala, where Sister Alphonsa lived until her death in 1946.

It is being described as a boost to the spirits of India's Christians.

According to a Vatican biography, when she was only 13 she deliberately thrust her foot into a pile of burning embers.

Her aim was to make herself less attractive, and therefore less likely to be forced into marriage.

Sister Alphonsa endured successive bouts of illness and died in her mid-30s.

In the Vatican's view, Jesus led her to perfection through a life of suffering.

WASHINGTON - Sen. John McCain and his Republican allies are readying a newly aggressive assault on Sen. Barack Obama's character, believing that to win in November they must shift the conversation back to questions about the Democrat's judgment, honesty and personal associations, several top Republicans said.

With just a month to go until Election Day, McCain's team has decided that its emphasis on the senator's biography as a war hero, experienced lawmaker and straight-talking maverick is insufficient to close a growing gap with Obama. The Arizonan's campaign is also eager to move the conversation away from the economy, an issue that strongly favors Obama and has helped him to a lead in many recent polls.

Regarding the birth date of Usamah Bin-Ladin, I've seen web pages that mention only a year – 1955, 1956, 1957, and 1958 – and I've seen web pages and posts that give a variety of dates: March 10, 1957; April 7, 1957; June 28, 1957; July 28, 1957; July 30, 1957; and October 3, 1957.
