With research backgrounds ranging from materials engineering to molecular biophysics, the seventeen scientists issued the "Ilulissat Statement -The Merging of Bio and Nano: Towards Cyborg Cells" last summer at a conference in Greenland, announcing their view that the early twenty-first century is a time of tremendous promise and tremendous peril. We face daunting problems of climate change, energy, health, and water resources. Synthetic biology offers solutions to these issues: from microorganisms that convert plant matter to fuels or that synthesize new drugs or target and destroy rogue cells in the body.

"This is a critical moment for synthetic biology," said Paul McEuen, professor of physics, Cornell University. "The choices facing us now — the scientific investments we make and the rules we set down to govern the field — will impact society for decades to come."

"As with any powerful technology, the promise comes with risk," McEuen stressed.

When you've been working with bullshit for as long as I have, you start to spot recurring themes: quacks and the pharmaceutical industry use the exact same tricks to sell their pills, everybody loves a "science bit" - even if it's wrong - and when people introduce pseudoscience into any explanation, it's usually because there's something else they're trying desperately not to talk about. But my favourite is this: alternative therapists, the media, and the drug industry all conspire to sell us reductionist, bio-medical explanations for problems that might more sensibly and constructively be thought of as social, political, or personal. And this medicalisation of everyday life isn't done to us; in fact, we eat it up.

But there is debate among investors over whether early, promising results from studies in Russia will translate into effectiveness in larger clinical trials.

Pfizer will pay $225 up front and $500 million in bio-bucks. It will pay for 60% of development costs and get 60% of profits.

Under the terms of the agreement, Medivation will receive an up-front cash payment of $225 million. Medivation also is eligible to receive payments of up to $500 million upon the attainment of development and regulatory milestones plus additional undisclosed commercial milestone payments.

The companies will share all U.S. development and commercialization expenses along with U.S. profits/losses on a 60 percent/40 percent basis, with Pfizer assuming the larger share of both expenses and profit/losses. In addition, Medivation will co-promote Dimebon to specialty physicians in the U.S.

Biogas

A Renewable fuel

Biogas, composed largely of methane and carbon dioxide, is an exciting player in the field of emerging, renewable fuels chiefly because of its production process, which allows nature to do her thing under some controlled conditions, then picks up after her.

However, the production of biogas, which captures methane, prevents that methane from reaching the atmosphere, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Like natural gas, biogas can be blended with hydrogen to create hydrogen/natural gas blends (HCNG), a blend with even fewer nitrogen oxide emissions than natural gas.

Biogas can very easily use the entire infrastructure already in place for natural gas.

The Future …

… is very bright for biogas. 2007: United States Department of Energy estimates 12,000 biogas-powered vehicles worldwide, a number expected to increase to 70,000 by 2010.

Congress has become accustomed to Corporate America taking care of the economy. Henry Ford developed the most important part of the economy, the middle class, by doubling the minimum wage and instituting health care and retirement benefits. And Ford and other business foundations developed the communities. Enforcement of our trade laws was left to hearings before administrative bodies and Congress allowed treble damages to be awarded to a business that succeeded in enforcing our trade laws. Congress doesn't regulate outsourcing because the economists and business leadership keep telling us the economy may need a little stimulation but it is fundamentally strong. And now, Congress is fearful of stopping outsourcing because Corporate America that contributes to campaigns constantly admonishes "free trade," "protectionism."
