Brothel offers discounts to cyclists

A Berlin brothel is doing its bit for the environment - by offering discounts to customers who arrive on bicycles.

"The recession has hit our industry hard," said Thomas Goetz, owner of the Maison d'envie brothel.

"Obviously we hope that the discount will attract more people. It's good for business, it's good for the environment - and it's good for the girls."

Customers who arrive on a bicycle or who can prove they took public transportation get a five euro (£4.30) discount from the usual 70-euro fee for a 45 minute session.

"We have around three to five new customers coming in daily to take advantage of the discount," he said, adding the green rebate has helped alleviate traffic and parking congestion in the neighbourhood.

Riding Your Bike at Night – How to Stay Safe

Riding a bicycle at night is a lot more dangerous than riding during the day. Most bicycles are equipped for daylight riding, but need to be adapted for night time use. Apart from the fact that your ability to see is going to be diminished, a cyclist is very difficult for motorists and pedestrians to see.

It is highly advisable that children should never ride at dawn, at dusk or at night. Adults who chose to accept the greatly increased risk of riding at dawn, at dusk or at night need to take extra care both riding and choosing specialized equipment which helps reduce that risk.

Joyriders tried to steal helicopter

Police in Hertfordshire are hunting two ambitious teenage joyriders who tried to take a helicopter for a spin.

The pair struck while the unlocked aircraft was parked in a field at Letchworth Rugby Club, reports Sky News.

The pilot, in his 40s, returned from a meeting to find an iPod, first aid kit, torches and fire extinguisher stolen.

He then discovered that the light-fingered culprits had also undertaken the first stages of starting the engine.

After carrying out safety checks, the helicopter owner took off and hovered at low altitude to check nothing was awry.

At this point he spotted two teenagers, both with bicycles, hiding in a bush nearby and watching him.

PC Quentin Lane, who is investigating the incident, said the pilot discovered that a series of electrical switches had been tampered with.

One youth is described as white, aged about 15, and was wearing a grey and white hooded top. The second is slightly younger and was wearing a camouflage top.

Not long ago, on a weekend jaunt from Sacramento to Davis, my co-conspirator and I happened upon a lycra-clad lass looking lost atop her carbon-fiber racer

She was riding in a group, she explained to us, a pack of her lycra-clad pals. Only she got left behind somehow. Everyone else had barreled on ahead, she reluctantly admitted, and she was unfamiliar with the route and feeling a bit uncertain.

‘This is a joy ride?’ I wondered. Such unchapliness! It’s unseemly.

Thank goodness, then, for Newton and his laws — the “equal and opposite reaction” bit. Which we will casually adapt to the social realm, particularly bicycles:

Here is to camaraderie, lugged steel, and plus fours. Here is to the (truly) social ride. Here is to tippling from hip flasks, maintaining a leisurely pace, and flaunting with style.

Here is to more cycling and less lycra.

Folks, that is a photograph of seven year old Kylie Bruehler. She is at a funeral service to bury her parents, both of whom were killed last week when a driver veered onto the shoulder and drove his pickup truck into them.

They were riding together on a tandem.

The local news reports that “investigators say there are no charges on the driver. They believe this was an accident and that somehow the driver lost control of his truck.”

Texas’s governor recently vetoed a law that would mandate a safe passing distance for cyclists, saying it was unnecessary.
