It's not only that there are people to peel biographies, investigate, reveal or create "scandals", and others to buy them, "friends" to be paid for their secrets and bargain their betrayal... in short, a whole system implying

Tags: sarah palin, john edwards, barack obama, elections, democrats, scandal, gossip

<clipSource>http://claudeperes.blogspot.com/</clipSource>

RuneScape news: 22 August 2008 - Jagex Store - Official Launch!

clipped by: vakama380

Clip Source: news.runescape.com

22 August 2008 - Jagex Store - Official Launch!

The Jagex Store has expanded to include a range of official RuneScape merchandise. Pain caused by emotional distress is felt more deeply and lasts longer tan pain caused by physical injuries, a new study has found out.

Study participants in the emotional pain condition reported higher levels of pain than participants in the physical pain condition, found the researchers. In an experiment that involved giving participants cognitive tasks after reliving a socially or physically painful event, those in the emotional pain condition performed worse than those thinking about physical injury.

One of the authors, Dr Kip Williams from Purdue, said: "While both types of pain can hurt very much at the time they occur, social pain has the unique ability to come back over and over again, whereas physical pain lingers only as an awareness that it was indeed at one time painful. Why aren't we always suffering pain by recollections of social betrayal and other forms of social pain? Because we are pretty good at keeping these memories at bay."

As a Russian jet bombed fields around his village, Djimali Avago, a Georgian

A similar sense of betrayal coursed through the conversations of many
Georgians here yesterday as their troops retreated under shellfire and the
Russian Army pressed forward to take full control of South Ossetia.

it overcomes its loss of willpower. In a state of psychological
weakness, weapons become a burden for the capitulating side. To defend
oneself, one must also be ready to die; there is little such readiness
in a society raised in the cult of material well-being. Nothing is
left, then, but concessions, attempts to gain time and betrayal.

Tags: alexander solzhenitsyn

<clipSource>http://www.columbia.edu/cu/augustine/arch/solzhenitsyn/harvard1978.html</clipSource>

Word of the Day: Bombast

clipped by: clipper43

Clip Source: www.dailywritingtips.com

Word of the Day: Bombast

Bombast (bŏm’băst’) means loud-mouthed, inflated speech. Bombast was cotton stuffing used to pad some types of clothing. The adjective is bombastic.

No, really - rent it [V or Vendetta] tonight, adjust your mental filter so you’re expecting a parody of bombastic posturing guff, and I guarantee you’ll be roaring with laughter at least eight times. (The Guardian)

“300” is about as violent as “Apocalypto” and twice as stupid. Adapted from a graphic novel by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley, it offers up a bombastic spectacle of honor and betrayal, rendered in images that might have been airbrushed onto a customized van sometime in the late 1970s. (NY Times)

<clipSource>http://www.dailywritingtips.com/word-of-the-day-bombast/</clipSource>

About Obama’s Comments At The Holocaust Memorial And Museum

clipped by: merrie
clipper's remarks: continued;
going without at home to help the fighting men overseas.

Words matter. Perhaps my words in the post, Obama: WWII won by speaking out as one voice, were not adequate to portray the betrayal of America’s–and the worlds–greatest generation. Perhaps I am simply making too much of nothing. Sure, Obama will say, it was just a euphemism; of course he honors the sacrifices, blah blah blah.

But I do not believe this is the truth. I believe that his words do mean something. His words assault the reality and remove the sacrifices. His words turn my grandparents and great uncles and great aunts into nothing, pushed aside in favor of modern liberal rhetoric with no goal beyond winning an election.

Our greatest generation did not speak out. Here's how:

The Bush administration is about to release a rule that will make it possible
for federal funding that is specifically designed to prevent unintended
pregnancy and promote reproductive health to now be used for anything but that.
This proposed rule will put women’s access to birth control and the information
they need to make health care decisions at risk.

If it happens, it will be a massive betrayal of women and families, and we
must stop it. We need you to speak out. Please let President Bush know that this
change is very wrong.

Tricking women when they are most vulnerable is wrong — and the federal government shouldn't pay people to do it.

<clipSource>http://www.plannedparenthood.org/issues-action/birth-control/stop-president-bushs-massive-sellout-womens-health-care-21522.htm</clipSource>

Archbishop of Canterbury: 'Christian doctrine is offensive to Muslims'

clipped by: Smoke TNT

Clip Source: www.dailymail.co.uk

15th July

Christian doctrine is offensive to Muslims, the Archbishop of Canterbury said yesterday.

Dr Rowan Williams also criticised Christianity's history for its violence, its use of harsh punishments and its betrayal of its peaceful principles.

His comments came in a highly conciliatory letter to Islamic leaders calling for an alliance between the two faiths for 'the common good'.

For instance, application of oxytocin to “investors” in experimental games increases their tendency to engage in social risks and trust someone else with their money (see this and this). The study by Baumgartner and his colleagues highlights the neural mechanisms through which oxytocin acts to facilitate trust behavior by investigating what happens in the brain when trust breaks down.

Clip Source: www.sciam.com

The development of trust is an essential social tool, allowing people to form productive and meaningful relationships, both at a professional and personal level. Bonds of trust are also extremely fragile, however and a single act of betrayal—such as a marital affair—can instantly erase years of trustworthy behavior. The consequences of such breaches in confidence can be disastrous, and not only for a relationship. People who have been betrayed in the past will sometimes start avoiding future social interactions, which is a potential precursor to social phobia. In light of these connections, recent research has attempted to elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying trust behavior. This is the goal of an exciting new study by neuroscientist Thomas Baumgartner and colleagues at the University of Zurich in Germany that combines different disciplines (economics and neuroscience) and methodologies (neuroimaging and neuropharmacology) to investigate how the brain adapts to breaches of trust.

Tags: trust, neuroscience

<clipSource>http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=to-trust-or-not-to-trust&sc=rss</clipSource>

Congress Votes to Immunize Lawbreaking Telecoms, Legalize Warrantless Eavesdropping

clipped by: papananook
clipper's remarks: What did I say about Obama--I reserved judgment---? The vote in favor of the new FISA bill was 69-28. Barack Obama joined every Senate Republican (and every House Republican other than one) by voting in favor of it, while his now-vanquished primary rival, Sen. Hillary Clinton, voted against it. The bill will now be sent to an extremely happy George Bush, who already announced that he enthusiastically supports it, and he will sign it into law very shortly.

. AMMAN, JORDAN --
A year ago, Sunni Arab fighter Abu Abed led an improbable revolt against Al Qaeda in Iraq. As he killed its leaders and burned down hide-outs, he became a symbol of a new group called the Sons of Iraq -- the man who dared to stand up to the extremists in Baghdad when it still ranked as a suicidal act.

Abu Abed's rise and fall encapsulates the complexities of the U.S.-funded Sons of Iraq program. Although the Shiite-led Iraqi government has regarded the Sons of Iraq as little more than a front for insurgent groups, the Sunni fighters' war helped end the cycle of car bombings and reprisal killings by Shiite militias that had sent Baghdad headlong into civil war. America's new friends also helped bring down the death rate of U.S. forces in Iraq.

Perhaps even more significantly, the charges against him belie the notion of an Iraqi government moving toward reconciliation among its Sunni and Shiite populations.

Tags: iraq, war, sunni, shiite, reconciliation, betrayal

<clipSource>http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fg-sons29-2008jun29,0,208236.story</clipSource>
