LENEXA, Kan. (Nov. 6, 2009) Two former employees of Mi Ranchito are accused of intentionally poisoning 48 patrons at the chain’s restaurant here in August.

Officials involved in the multi-agency investigation said the alleged poisonings were tied to one of the suspect’s firing from Mi Ranchito’s Olathe, Kan., restaurant and his belief that an owner of the six-unit chain was responsible for the loss of his vehicle.

Arnoldo Bazan, 30, and his wife, Yini De La Torre, 19, were charged in U.S. District Court after allegedly mixing Methomyl, a poisonous substance used in pesticide, into salsa served to patrons at a Mi Ranchito restaurant, U.S. attorney Lanny Welch said Thursday.

Neither Bazan nor De La Torre could be reached for comment as of press time.

“I’m very happy. My business has started to come back,” said Rulber Dela Torre, co-owner of Mi Ranchito. “People are seeing that it was not about the cleanliness of the restaurant, but an intentional act by somebody trying to hurt my business.”

Antonio Peck was in kindergarten in 1999 when his family filed suit against the Baldwinsville, N.Y., school district. Antonio is in 10th grade now — and his family is still waiting for the case to be resolved. At this rate, he’ll be a college graduate when the courts finally render a decision.

On Oct. 15, the Peck family’s legal marathon took another turn when a federal appeals court heard oral arguments in Peck v. Baldwinsville School District for an astounding third time in 10 years. In the unfortunate history of lawsuits over religion in schools, the Peck case ranks as one of the most wasteful, divisive and unnecessary of all time.

At the heart of the dispute is a poster created by kindergartener Antonio to fulfill an assignment designed to show what he had learned about protecting the environment. Antonio depicted people picking up trash and recycling, but he also included a figure of a kneeling man that Antonio meant to be Jesus.

Like many people, Gina Uberti wanted to take time off from work for a religious holiday.

Unlike most Connecticut workers, her religion is Wicca, the largest of the neo-pagan, earth-based faiths. Wiccans worship multiple deities, use magic in their rituals, adhere to a basic code of morality, and hold four major seasonally based festivals.

Uberti attended one of those festivals last October. A dispute with a supervisor over that vacation has led to an unusual federal lawsuit.

Jarad M. Lucan, who practices employment law at Durant, Nichols, Houston, Hodgson, & Cortese-Costa in Bridgeport, is not involved with the case. But he said it should send a message to employers that, no matter how common or obscure the religion, if a worker sincerely believes it to be their religion, then employers must reasonably accommodate them under the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964.

La Paz celebrates Day of the Skulls

Some inside the Church even link the practice to the occult.

"I receive them and not as enemies of the Catholic faith," the cemetery's Roman Catholic priest, Father Jaime Fernandez, told the BBC after giving an informal blessing to thousands of skull-carrying devotees at the cemetery's chapel.
"Officially the Catholic Church does not recognise such a thing," Father Fernandez adds. But, let's be honest, in the end, who am I to stop their uncontrollable faith?"

As Muslims met for weekly prayers in mosques here and nationwide, they underscored their solidarity for the victims of Thursday's rampage at Fort Hood, allegedly by a man whose very name manifests his Muslim heritage.

Muslims have condemned the attack blamed on Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan as cowardly and antithetical to core Islamic beliefs and practices, while also issuing warnings to the public and their own communities about the potential for backlash.

Several hundred Muslims gathered in the city's largest mosque, the Islamic Center of San Antonio, where they denounced the shooter's violence and distanced themselves from his version of Islam.

“Most Muslims that do join the Army are Americans first,” he said, “and they're there to protect their country first.”

“I just want to show myself in a positive way for the religion I represent,” he said. “I just hope people don't stereotype.”
