In San Antonio, Muslims stand with the massacre victims

As Muslims met for weekly prayers in mosques here and nationwide, they underscored their solidarity for the victims of Thursday's rampage at Fort Hood, allegedly by a man whose very name manifests his Muslim heritage.

Muslims have condemned the attack blamed on Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan as cowardly and antithetical to core Islamic beliefs and practices, while also issuing warnings to the public and their own communities about the potential for backlash.

Several hundred Muslims gathered in the city's largest mosque, the Islamic Center of San Antonio, where they denounced the shooter's violence and distanced themselves from his version of Islam.

“Most Muslims that do join the Army are Americans first,” he said, “and they're there to protect their country first.”

“I just want to show myself in a positive way for the religion I represent,” he said. “I just hope people don't stereotype.”

Many people who voted for Obama, including myself, did so primarily out of hope that his spirit and belief in change deserved a chance to succeed. My candid perspective is that his spirit began to diminish during his swearing in and has continued to dissipate ever since. It's hard to understand and very frustrating...but i think my feelings of disappointment are shared by many in this country.

Holy Tyr! Queens voters made American history tonight, when they chose Dan Halloran as the nation's first openly heathen elected official.

Halloran will serve as the City Council member from the 19th district, representing Bayside, Auburndale and part of Flushing. He and Kevin Kim were involved in a bruising campaign to the finish, which included many religious and racial fights and allegations.

Breaking with typical American tradition on Election Night, Halloran did not end his acceptance speech with "God bless America," or even "Gods bless America." But he did acknowledge the controversy his religion brought to his campaign. While thanking his law partner, he said "The next time you give me advice to take a website down, I'll do it." He joked about it again in relaying news to the assembled tea baggers of Republican victories in New Jersey and Virginia. "I would call this a Reagan revolution, except I'm not a protestant Irishman."

When I looked for an underdog bet in this week's "Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers" event I considered two things: The matchup odds and who on the list offers good underdog value, while also having a great shot at pulling off a moderate upset win.

In this week's event, I pick Jason "Mayhem" Miller. With online sportsbook posting up all the MMA odds early for this event, the current line on this bout has Jake Shields at -260 to win over Miller at +200. I like the value with Miller in this matchup.

If Miller sticks to his game plan and looks for the victory, not the battle, I think he can pull it off. Miller's proven ability, the fact that I think he's a smart guy that can figure out Shields, and my belief that he can stop his opponent from taking him to the mat and controlling him is making Miller my dog on this card.

Senate Democrats are proving once again that no judicial nominee is too extreme for them to stomach. A move seems to be afoot to open debate on the Senate floor this week on the nomination of David Hamilton of Indiana to the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. This judge is a radical's radical.

Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, the ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee, sent a letter on Friday to his fellow senators outlining his objections to Mr. Hamilton, who is a federal district judge. The senator first objected to Judge Hamilton's stated belief that judges should effectively amend the Constitution - "writing footnotes to the Constitution," the judge called it - through evolving case law. Second, Judge Hamilton has publicly and specifically embraced the president's "empathy standard," which even Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor has now openly rejected.

The European Court of Human Rights ruled on Tuesday that crucifixes should be removed from Italian classrooms, prompting Vatican anger and sparking uproar in Italy, where such icons are embedded in the national psyche.

"The ruling of the European court was received in the Vatican with shock and sadness," said Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi, adding that it was "wrong and myopic" to try to exclude a symbol of charity from education.

The ruling by the court in Strasbourg, which Italy said it would appeal, said crucifixes on school walls -- a common sight that is part of every Italian's life -- could disturb children who were not Christians.

Italy has been in the throes of national debate on how to deal with a growing population of immigrants, mostly Muslims, and the court sentence is likely to become another battle cry for the center-right government's policy to restrict newcomers.

In a recent poll, young adults (ages 18 to 25) predicted that 61 percent of their retirement income, on average, would need to come from personal savings. A startling 59 percent of young adults—higher than any other previous age group—assume they will be financially worse-off and less secure than prior generations.

It is not hard to see what drives this belief.

All Army chaplains wear the same uniform, and all of them answer to the same calling: to provide comfort and to relieve the suffering of American soldiers.

But one chaplain stands out from the crowd. Thomas Dyer is the first and only Buddhist chaplain in the history of the U.S. Army.

Although his faith is grounded in pacifism, the 43-year-old Dyer says war has become a necessary part of peace.

"My teacher has concluded that without the military, without civil protection, the world would enter into a very dark place very quickly," Dyer told Fox News. "There aren't that many caves to run to, there aren't that many mountains to go to anymore. And if we don't have protection, we suffer greatly."

A former Baptist preacher, Dyer found his new faith a few years ago through the practice of intense meditation. Born in Nashville, Tenn., he says his Christian background gives him an advantage in meeting the demands of a military with diverse spiritual needs.

it will have little success until the Afghan people and the population of Pakistan's Western territories are brought politically into the decision making

President Obama still has the credibility to do that, but his window of opportunity is closing
