Stunningly Intricate: Curta Mechanical Calculator

For years Curta calculators enjoyed a cult status among collectors, and as recently as in 2003 they were featured in William Gibson's "Pattern Recognition" book. However, I daresay, not featured enough. This marvel of mechanical engineering should be given more exposure, especially given the bizarre and spooky circumstances of its origin.

Entirely mechanical, no electricity or batteries involved.
- Designed by Curt Herzstark in 1938 and perfected inside a concentration camp.
- Considered to be the most efficient portable calculator (until electronic calculators came in the 70s)

- Simply a thing of beauty, stunning piece of engineering art.

First, you gotta feel it in your hand... It purrs.

There is no electricity, wires, or batteries! Just a sophisticated package of miniature cogs and parts, that is a joy to disassemble and put together again...

WASILLA, Alaska: Shortly after taking office as governor in 2006, Sarah Palin sent an e-mail message to Paul Riley, her former pastor in the Assembly of God Church, which her family began attending when she was a youth. She needed spiritual advice in how to do her new job, said Riley, who is 78 and retired from the church.

"She asked for a biblical example of people who were great leaders and what was the secret of their leadership," Riley said.

He wrote back that she should read again from the Old Testament the story of Esther, a beauty queen who became a real one, gaining the king's ear to avert the slaughter of the Jews and vanquish their enemies. When Esther is called to serve, God grants her a strength she never knew she had.

The only reason the media "focused" on Bristol Palin's pregnancy is because Sarah Palin is a staunch advocate of "abstinence only" education - and her daughter is a perfect example of why that type of "education" does NOT work.

And if Davis wants to whine about objective journalism, what about the media frenzy over Obama's pastor, the flag pin non-issue, etc etc etc.

If she wants to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency, she had better start answering to the people of the United States.

And if she's being so secretive and arrogant now, while just a barely-known candidate, imagine what she would be like if (God forbid) she were to become POTUS?

Hell YEAH she's scared to answer to the people! Prove us wrong, beauty queen.

Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin isn't giving interviews to the news media and won't until ``the campaign is ready,'' campaign manager Rick Davis said today.

Palin will answer questions from reporters ``when we think it's time and when she feels comfortable doing it,''

``She's not scared to answer questions, but you know what?'' Davis said. ``We run our campaign, not the news media.''

`She will do interviews, but she'll do them on the terms and conditions'' the campaign decides.

Davis referred to the media as ``piranhas'' and said that reporters focused on Palin's personal life, including the pregnancy of her unmarried 17-year-old daughter.

The coverage last week was ``not what I would call objective journalism,'' Davis said. ``So until at which point in time we feel like the news media is going to treat her with some level of respect and deference, I think it would be foolhardy to put her out into that kind of environment.''

Palin threatened to evict Exxon Mobil Corp., the world’s biggest oil company, and partners BP Plc, Chevron Corp. and ConocoPhillips from a state-owned gas field, winning their promise to increase Alaska’s natural-gas output 17 percent. She raised taxes on oil profits by $1.5 billion a year and rejected industry ownership of a $25 billion pipeline.

Politicians and energy companies are haggling for revenue with oil around $100 a barrel. Exxon and partners say higher taxes may lead to fewer investments in Alaska, home to the second-largest U.S. reserves behind Texas. None has quit the state. Exxon and ConocoPhillips last year left Venezuela rather than accept lower profits when Chavez seized oil fields.

The Garni Gorge

Much like the Giant’s Causeway, the Garny Gorge is made out of a high number of basalt columns. It’s an absolute must-see if you find yourself in Armenia.

It’s a wonderful canyon shaped by the ever-flowing river Goght river. Atop the basalt walls of the gorge the famous 1st century Garni temple can be seen.

Garni Gorge offers its visitors an incredible view and makes them feel like they’re in a fantasy place.

It's that moment when the woman of the week
gets 'it'. That moment when she loves her body, loves herself, sees the
beauty standing there in the body she is currently living in.

No surgery. No painful diets. Not even exercise unless the woman
chooses to firm up the 'wobbly bits', as the host, Gok Wan calls them. I
understand there is a U.S. version of this show but I love Gok. He
genuinely sees the beauty of a woman and reflects it back to them until
they see it for themselves. That is a powerful moment.

One reason I love this show so much is because distorted body image
is a pet peeve of mine. I struggle with it myself although not so much
lately. As I've grown older I've learned to appreciate this body that holds me, providing protection for my heart and soul.

We're made to feel afraid and less than by the marketing
images all around us. We're afraid to look different, smell different
or even act in our own best interest when it might make us stand out

Bella Abzug -- the shrewd, hard-hitting, passionate and idealistic legislative genius who led the women’s movement and represented New York in Congress -- once remarked that we would only have true gender equality when an incompetent woman could go as far as an incompetent man. That milestone appears to have been achieved with the nomination of Sarah Palin for Vice President. Which is not to say that Palin couldn’t become competent, but Bella, who understood and believed in government so profoundly, would be horrified at how little expertise Palin brings to the table right now. Even the reportedly clear glasses she wears to play down her beauty-queen credential and enhance her gravitas can’t make up for experience. This is not an anti-woman statement; it is a pro-national leadership statement. Running the country is not a learn-as-you-go job.

Why does this particular pitbull in lipstick infuriate — and scare us — so viscerally? Why does her very existence make us feel — and act — so ugly?

Palin is a symbol for everything we hoped was not true in the world anymore. We hoped that we didn't have to hide our ambition or pretend that our goals were effortlessly achieved ("I never really set out to be in public affairs, much less to run for this office," the Governor has said.) We hoped that we could be mothers without having our motherhood be our defining characteristic, as it seems to be for Palin. We hoped that we did not have to be perfect beauty queens to get to where we wanted to be in life, that our looks, good or bad, wouldn't matter. Whether or not you think it's appropriate to comment on Palin's appearance, the fact of her attractiveness exists, and is being used to her advantage by Republican sloganeers ("the hottest Governor in the coldest state," et. al).
