Darrel J. Vandeveld was in despair. The hard-nosed lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve, a self-described conformist praised by his superiors for his bravery in Iraq, had lost faith in the Guantanamo Bay war crimes tribunals in which he was a prosecutor.

In a declaration and subsequent testimony, he said the U.S. government was not providing defense lawyers with the evidence it had against their clients, including exculpatory information -- material considered helpful to the defense.

Saying that the accused enemy combatants were more likely to be wrongly convicted without that evidence, Vandeveld testified that he went from being a "true believer to someone who felt truly deceived" by the tribunals. The system in place at the U.S. military facility in Cuba, he wrote in his declaration, was so dysfunctional that it deprived "the accused of basic due process and subject[ed] the well-intentioned prosecutor to claims of ethical misconduct."

<clipSource>http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/front/la-na-gitmo12-2008oct12,0,5776503.story</clipSource>

Futuropolis 2058

clipped by: zalisan
clipper's remarks: Creating Sustainable Urban Environments through Innovation

Clip Source: www.futureofcities.com

How beautifully, the creators have changed the basic characters and introduced wonderful twists in their lives. The main attraction of the entire second season was Denise. PPC is defined as the guaranteed placement of a small "ad" on the search results page for a specific keyword or keywords in return for a specified payment, but ONLY when a visitor clicks on that ad. The advertiser pays nothing to appear on the results page; they only pay the amount they have agreed to (or bid for) when someone actually clicks on their ad and is taken to their landing page; therefore, the term "pay per click".

Tags: seo services

<clipSource>http://therealtraffic.com/ppc.htm</clipSource>

Still Undecided?
"All quantum security schemes are based on the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, on the fact that you cannot measure quantum information without disturbing it," he explained.

"Because of that, one can have a communications channel between two users on which it's impossible to eavesdrop without creating a disturbance. An eavesdropper would create a mark on it. That was the key idea."

In practice this means using the ultimate quantum objects: photons, the atoms of light. Incredibly faint beams of light equating to single photons fired a million times a second raced between the nodes in the Vienna network.

Each node, housed in a different Siemens office (Siemens has provided the fibre links), contains a small rack of electronics - boxes about the size of a PC, and a handful of sensitive light detectors.

<clipSource>http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7661311.stm</clipSource>

type 2 diabetes

clipped by: freddyp

Clip Source: www.diabetes.org

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy. When you eat food, the body breaks down all of the sugars and starches into glucose, which is the basic fuel for the cells in the body. Insulin takes the sugar from the blood into the cells. When glucose builds up in the blood instead of going into cells, it can cause two problems:

Right away, your cells may be starved for energy.

Over time, high blood glucose levels may hurt your eyes, kidneys, nerves or heart.

<clipSource>http://www.diabetes.org/type-2-diabetes.jsp</clipSource>

What is Ultrasonic Welding?

clipped by: laraluna50
clipper's remarks: Basic Steps for Ultra Sonic Welding

Clip Source: www.dukcorp.com

What is Ultrasonic Welding?

Ultrasonic plastic welding is the
joining or reforming of thermoplastics through the use of heat
generated from high-frequency mechanical motion. It is accomplished by
converting high-frequency electrical energy into high-frequency
mechanical motion. That mechanical motion, along with applied force,
creates frictional heat at the plastic components' mating surfaces
(joint area) so the plastic material will melt and form a molecular
bond between the parts. The following drawings illustrate the
          basic principle of ultrasonic welding.

Step 1 - Parts in fixture

In a word, no. As Frederick Soddy (1926 Nobel Laureate chemist and underground economist) pointed out long ago, “you cannot permanently pit an absurd human convention, such as the spontaneous increment of debt [compound interest] against the natural law of the spontaneous decrement of wealth [entropy]”. The population of “negative pigs” (debt) can grow without limit since it is merely a number; the population of “positive pigs” (real wealth) faces severe physical constraints. The dawning realization that Soddy’s common sense was right, even though no one publicly admits it, is what underlies the crisis.

The agglomerating of mortgages of differing quality into opaque and shuffled bundles should be outlawed. One of the basic assumptions of an efficient market with a meaningful price is a homogeneous product.

Tags: post:socialmedian, financial_crisis, economics, money, blogclip, commentary, !toread

<clipSource>http://www.theoildrum.com/node/4617</clipSource>

Why nature can't be reduced to mathematical laws

clipped by: Mohir
clipper's remarks: If so, then even perfect knowledge of the physics at one level would be inadequate for understanding organisation at higher levels. This conjecture has been debated ever since.
Now Mile Gu at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, and colleagues, claim that it may be possible to prove Anderson's idea. They studied a basic mathematical model called the Ising model, which is often used to study how magnetism arises in iron and other materials from the collective organisation of their atoms.
Using the model, the team focused on whether the pattern that the atoms adopt under various scenarios, such as a state of lowest energy, could be calculated from knowledge of those forces. They found that in some scenarios, the pattern of atoms could not be calculated from knowledge of the forces - even given unlimited computing power. In mathematical terms, the system is considered "formally undecidable".

Clip Source: www.newscientist.com

ONE of the grand aims of science is to explain every aspect of nature in terms of simple, fundamental laws - but is this possible? A team of physicists claims to have found a hint that some things simply cannot be computed, and that nature could be more than the sum of its parts.

The idea of reductionism, a key tool in science for centuries, holds that everything in nature can ultimately be understood by gaining knowledge of its constituent parts. The laws of fluid flows, for example, can be derived from the deeper laws of atomic and molecular motion, which in turn follow from quantum physics.

In 1972, physicist Philip Anderson pointed out that there could be a problem with this approach. Anderson suggested that some systems may be more than the sum of their parts. He championed "emergence" - the notion that important kinds of organisation might emerge in systems of many interacting parts, but not follow in any way from the properties of those parts.

Tags: nature, physics, laws, complexity, emergence

<clipSource>http://www.newscientist.com/channel/fundamentals/mg20026764.100-why-nature-cant-be-reduced-to-mathematical-laws.html</clipSource>

Inmotion hosting forum

clipped by: emsplanet
clipper's remarks: Inmotion hosting forum and review. I’ve loaded the header into my normal graphics file, but Pay Pal say I need to have it on a secure server which starts with https:// . They say that “If the image is not stored on a secure server, your customer’s web browser will display a message that the payment page contains insecure items”. I have no idea how to do this and can’t seem to find instructions basic enough for me to understand. Can anyone help please? Could you also give me the full URL for the folder? Thanks guys.
I'm thinking these would be a perfect activity for my little guy while his big brother is in school. They can be pretty expensive, so we decided to make our own (of course!).

Children's Lacing Cards Tutorial

Here's what you'll need:

*Craft foam
*Scissors
*Pen
*Shape to trace
*1/4" hole punch

*Shoelace for lacing

1. We started with one piece of foam sheet from a local craft store. It was only 99 cents and large enough to make four or five lacing shapes.

2. Trace a shape on the foam with a pen. Try using some cute clip art. We used a cute Japanese coaster as our pattern. Cut it out. We used a smaller hole punch on this hedgehog to give him an eye.

3. Use hole punch to punch holes around the edge of the shape. You may choose to mark the holes evenly with a ruler before starting, but it's not necessary.

4. Add your favorite shoelace--that's it!

<clipSource>http://littlebirdiesecrets.blogspot.com/2008/09/homemade-childrens-lacing-cards.html</clipSource>
