Battle of interpretations over the 350 years of the Treaty of the Pyrenees

This Saturday November 7, the downtown area of Perpignan will accomodate the important manifestation of the 350 years of the Treaty of the Pyrenees, by which the Northern part of Catalonia passed under French administration, before becoming the department of the Eastern Pyrenees in 1790. After a simple recall mémoriel in 1959, it is in 1985 that the first identity demonstration was organized, attracting from now on several thousands of people, in presence, this year, of the direction of the political party souverainist ERC (left republican of Catalonia), established in Barcelona. Ten organizing associations, in a Catalan vision of the History, asserts a feeling of "resistance", but on the other hand, in a French vision, the city council man perpignanais MRC (Republican Movement and Citizen) Olivier Amiel, considers that the term "annexation" of Roussillon in France, usual in Catalonia, goes to "misinterpretation of the history".

A Senate climate change panel gives a feel-good nod to the collapsing Copenhagen process:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A controversial climate change bill cleared its first hurdle in the U.S. Senate on Thursday, allowing President Barack Obama to tout progress in the run-up to next month's global warming talks in Copenhagen.

...But Democrats are likely to fall far short of their goal of passing legislation in the full Senate before Copenhagen as Boxer's bill lacks enough support for full approval.

BARCELONA/WASHINGTON, Nov 5, Reuters - A U.N. climate treaty may need an extra year beyond a December deadline to agree details, delegates at U.N. talks said on Thursday even as a U.S. Senate committee approved a carbon-capping bill.

The Nov. 2-6 meeting of 175 nations in Spain, the last session before a U.N. accord is due in Copenhagen next month, turned gloomy about salvaging a strong deal after two years of negotiations.

Llorenç Riber tuvo la fortuna singular de nacer en una de las casas de pisos construidas por Gaudí en Barcelona; su padre decía que parecía una conejera. It’s not that Barcelona is a dangerous city. Of course, like in any other big city there are pickpockets who focus especially on tourists. But with a little common sense and precaution, nothing will happen. Here are some guidelines to help tourists visiting Barcelona feel and be more safe!
