Kentucky Politician: God First, Homeland Security Second

A fundamentalist state has ordered that God's name must always be mentioned in its security reports, and that a plaque must be posted on the door of the government's Emergency Operations Center. Woe be unto the officeholder who does not pay sufficient homage to the His Extreme Beneficence!

Is this some radical Islamofascist nation that requires its ministers to prostrate themselves before Allah? Nope, it's Kentucky. Representative Tom Riner (who sidelines as a Southern Baptist minister) added a provision to his state's 2006 Homeland Security legislation mandating that religious duties must come "before all else, including its distribution of millions of dollars in federal grants and its analysis of possible threats."

A lawyer calls attention to a Court of Appeals decision this week not to rehear an earlier ruling upholding a change of custody of a two-year-old from his mother to his father.

The Court of Appeals' original decision affirming the change of custody noted that the trial judge was influenced by the mother's statement that she followed Wicca -- although she later said it was just a casual remark and that she really was a Baptist. The opinion cited Judge Robert Vittitow's concern about care of the child, but also said:

"Finally, he stated his concern over her testimony regarding the Wicca religion, stating she probably was more involved in it than she led the court to believe."

The mother asked for a rehearing. It was denied yesterday without comment, except a stinging dissent from Judge Hart, who still believes a religious prejudice -- irrelevant to the law -- was the contributing factor in Vittitow's decision.

Billboard promoting atheism will be removed

The city recieved 90. YES only 90! (In an area that has a population of aprox 2 million) complaints about the billboard. And with those 90 complaints they went to the billboard company to have it yanked down. These bastards stomped all over the 1st amendment because they don't like the idea of people displaying anything that opposes their ideological illness.

An Ontario billboard company is removing a controversial Rancho Cucamonga billboard promoting atheism after receiving complaints, according to the group that paid for the advertisement.

The billboard, at the busy corner of Archibald Avenue and Foothill Boulevard, says "Imagine No Religion" in large letters on a stained-glass background. Underneath is the name of the group, "Freedom From Religion Foundation," and the group's Web address.

"We're being censored," Gaylor said.

The billboard was the group's first in California. Nine others had previously gone up in other cities.

Judy Rooze, administrator of First Baptist Church of Rancho Cucamonga, which is two blocks from the billboard, was relieved it was coming down.

Rooze said it was unsettling.

"I understand people have freedom of speech, but this is taking it too far," she said. "It's very jarring."

Religious viewpoints are constantly aired, but people rarely hear from atheists and agnostics, she said.

Decontee Williams was so excited by Barack Obama’s victory on Tuesday night that she started jumping up and down — and went into labor. Twelve hours later, Barack Jeilah was born at Phoenix Baptist Hospital to Ms. Williams and Prince Jeilah. The baby was 8 pounds 9 ounces and had a full head of hair.

“I love Barack Obama, and I love the name,” said Ms. Williams, 31, who came to the United States as a refugee from Liberia in 2003. “In Africa, we call it a blessing. That is a good name.”

In the last week, Barack, Obama, Michelle, Malia and Sasha have become inspirations for first and middle names across the United States, according to news reports. But the Obama baby boom has been even more pronounced in Kenya, particularly in Kisumu, an area in the western part of the country where relatives of Mr. Obama live.

This bill would:

• Provide child care to low-income and student parents.

• Make the Adoption Tax Credits permanent.

• Ensure that pregnant women are not denied health care by insurance companies and that coverage is continued for newborns.

• Codify the regulation that extends coverage under the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) to low-income pregnant women and unborn children.

• Increase funding for the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Nutrition Program.

• Provide grants to institutions of higher education to fund pregnant and parenting student services.

• Provide new mothers with free home visits by registered nurses.

“I’m going to vote like the spirit say vote,” Miss Harris chanted softly.

As they exited the voting booths, some in wheelchairs, others with canes, these foot soldiers of the civil rights movement could not suppress either their jubilation or their astonishment

Late Tuesday night, when the networks declared Mr. Obama the winner, Miss Harris could not hold back the tears, the emotions of a lifetime released in a flood. She shared a lengthy embrace with friends gathered at the Obama headquarters, and then led the exultant crowd in song.

the Westboro Baptist Church's appearances aren't intended as communication. They're intended as harassment, and they're meant to hurt.

More to the point, Fred Phelps has no more right to his message than anyone else has to theirs. A mournful, loving, and respectful funeral is a complex set of messages exchanged by family and friends at an emotionally charged moment in their lives. It's an important occasion for them. Fred Phelps does his best to disrupt that occasion and those messages -- not because it's necessary in order to convey his own message, but because he wants to make it hurt as much as possible.

clipper's remarks: With so many stories like this popping up this year, I'm really starting to like the idea of abolishing religious tax exemptions. They should only maintain exemption for the money they get for social assistance programs. They want a nice big fancy church, they should pay taxes on that just like everyone else. They set up a shelter for the homeless, as with secular programs, they receive tax exemption.

Americans United Asks IRS To Investigate N.C. Baptist Group That Hosted Obama Rally

Event Featuring Michelle Obama May Have Violated Federal Tax Law, Says Watchdog Group

The General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina may have violated federal tax law by hosting Michelle Obama, wife of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, at an event that appeared to be little more than a campaign rally, says Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

During her Oct. 29 appearance before the group, Obama praised her husband and told the crowd he is qualified to be president because of his past struggles. “Don’t we deserve a president with that kind of experience?” she asked. “Barack Obama gets it because he’s been there.”

The Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United, said the event was not the type of non-partisan activity that churches are permitted to host.

In a letter to the IRS today, Lynn requested an investigation of the matter.
