After dipping below 8,000 for the first time in five years, the Dow see-sawed to a 8,451.19 close, a 128 point drop, to end one of its most turbulent weeks in history. Today's gyrations began with an early drop of more than 600 points following a panicked plunge in the international markets. Particularly hard hit today were Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs. As The Wall Street Journal points out, "The stock market has so far avoided a one day plunge of 10 percent, the traditional definition of a crash. But even in the two instances when such a single-day drop did happen, in 1929 and 1987, the full week bloodletting was not as bad" as this week has been. Not very reassuring, is it?

Turning Facts Into Speculation

How silly to put up one picture of a man who looks like a player with bad hair and bad jewelry and a huge package swathed in purple and make a statement that all women are bisexual because they found the second picture of the woman to be more appealing. Bisexuality is very complex and most likely a variant. Does that mean there aren't a lot of women who are bisexual and closeted? Of course not. Is attraction based on more than just the image in the retina? YES, YES, YES.
Do I have to post a link to a video of PINK to forget all of this? DUH.

It seems like every couple days another study is released. At that point the journalism machine spins into overdrive and starts turning facts into speculation, correlation into causation.

A recent example is the an article in the New York Times that summarizes a study on female bisexuality.

the journalist then speculates that all women are inherently bisexual, or at least significantly more so then men. This is a pretty big leap in my opinion.

Attraction is based on more than just the image on my retina.

Just because a select group of women were not as aroused by a certain photo of a naked man as they were by a certain photo of a naked woman does not instantly mean that all women are inherently bisexual.

It’s these sorts of extreme extrapolations that always bother me.

One illegal alien was arrested this year in Tucson after allegedly using a stolen social security number to buy two homes and rack up over $780,000 in bad debt.

Some five million fraudulent home mortgages are in the hands of illegal aliens, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

It's not known how many of those have contributed to the subprime housing mortgage meltdown, but it has affected every state, including Arizona.

The problem began years ago when banks were forced to give mortgages without confirming social security numbers or borrower identification. As a result, illegal immigrants were able to obtain home mortgages which they could not afford.

As the Dow continues to plummet, it's helpful to understand another metric (which still doesn't offer much room for optimism right now).

Ours is a crisis of credit: Financial firms are unwilling to lend to each other (at all-but-exorbitant rates) for fear that borrowing firms may fail or that they themselves may need the cash to fend off their own crisis.

the TED Spread measures credit conditions directly. Bloomberg tracks the TED Spread here.

Why TED? The T comes from "T-bill," shorthand for short-term Treasury bills, and the ED comes from "eurodollar contracts." Because interbank lending is international, loans between banks are often called eurodollar transactions. The three-month interbank interest rate is what an American bank can expect to receive for a dollar loan to a European bank (or any other bank, for that matter-"euro" is just a bad substitute for global here), or vice versa. Not surprisingly, interest rates on loans between banks are higher than the interest rate on T-bills.

CBS News Reporter Criticizes Obama Campaign

Why does Obama's aircraft smell bad? Chitlns? Naw - the elite don't eat what the common folk eat. Think about it. Someone who hangs around with shady characters and doesn't notice filth, probably wouldn't know if something has a bad odor.

I'll tell you this - Obama and Biden have a bad odor, and I hope America wakes up and notices that stench before they cast their votes.

After most of the previous 12 months covering Barack Obama's campaign for the presidency, it was interesting, instructive and, well, relaxing to follow John McCain for the last few days. The differences between the two are striking.

It is true that McCain enjoys taking questions from the audience in town hall-style settings. That doesn't mean he is the master of that kind of forum, it just means he's good at it. He likes to converse with voters. Obama does it well too, but seldom achieves that intangible bond with the people that all politicians crave -- or fake.

The national headquarters in Chicago airily dismisses complaints from journalists wondering why a schedule cannot be printed up or at least e-mailed in time to make coverage plans.

The McCain campaign plane is better than Obama's, which is cramped, uncomfortable and smells terrible most of the time. Somehow the McCain folks manage to keep their charter clean, even where the press is seated.

Hells Angels to the Bitter End

Check out this YouTube video of a Hells Angels funeral in Daly City, California. What a thunderous sendoff!

Mark “Papa” Guardado, president of the Hells Angels' San Francisco chapter, was murdered in a bar called the Dirty Thieves. The assassin was apparently a member of the Mongols Motorcycle Club. Can you think of a better way for an Angel to die? (By the way, if you make your living designing websites, check out the sites of both motorcycle clubs. Each site, in its own way, is brilliantly conceived and executed.)

Joining the Angels in the funeral procession were members of the She Devils Motorcycle Club. I recommend taking a look at the pictures on their site.
