The consequences of Lehman’s fall were apparent within days, yet key policy players have largely wasted the past four weeks. Now they’ve reached a moment of truth: They’d better do something soon — in fact, they’d better announce a coordinated rescue plan this weekend — or the world economy may well experience its worst slump since the Great Depression.

What he should have proposed instead, many economists agree, was direct injection of capital into financial firms

The question now is whether these moves are too little, too late. I don’t think so, but it will be very alarming if this weekend rolls by without a credible announcement of a new financial rescue plan, involving not just the United States but all the major players.

And the time to act is now. You may think that things can’t get any worse — but they can, and if nothing is done in the next few days, they will.

he falsely claimed that Mr. Obama supported “comprehensive sex education” for kindergartners

Mr. McCain repeatedly, and incorrectly, asserted that Mr. Obama would raise taxes on the middle class

A McCain advertisement called “Fact Check” was itself found to be “less than honest” by FactCheck.org

“The last month, for sure, I think the predominance of liberty taken with truth and the facts has been more McCain than Obama,” said Don Sipple, a Republican advertising strategist.

Being called out
Indeed, in recent days, Mr. McCain has been increasingly called out by news organizations, editorial boards and independent analysts like FactCheck.org. The group, which does not judge whether one candidate is more misleading than another, has cried foul on Mr. McCain more than twice as often since the start of the political conventions as it has on Mr. Obama.

Harsh advertisements and negative attacks are a staple of presidential campaigns, but Senator John McCain has drawn an avalanche of criticism this week from Democrats, independent groups and even some Republicans for regularly stretching the truth in attacking Senator Barack Obama’s record and positions.

Mr. Obama has also been accused of distortions, but this week Mr. McCain has found himself under particularly heavy fire for a pair of headline-grabbing attacks

Indeed, in recent days, Mr. McCain has been increasingly called out by news organizations, editorial boards and independent analysts like FactCheck.org.

Some who have criticized Mr. McCain have accused him of blatant untruths and of failing to correct himself when errors were pointed out.

Finally, what I think we are seeing is the collapse of the Republican party - and it's from within.

Americans that I know (Republicans) are publically towing the line, privately, from what some tell me, are either not going to vote this time around, or are going to change sides.

Democrats have a leader. Several in fact, and that will change things forever.

Finally, the web has undermined the incompetance of the media, probably once and for all.

Sarah Palin is the nail in the coffin ot the Republican effort, but I believe that Obama had it sown up already. It isn't going to be a landslide, it will be an avalanche to Obama in 08.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) — A helicopter plucked two frostbitten Dutch climbers from K-2 on Monday after an avalanche and exposure left at least 11 people presumed dead on the world's second-highest mountain. The rescue of a stranded Italian was aborted but, he told a colleague, "I am surely not going to give up now."

Helicopters save two Dutch climbers after K2 disaster

GILGIT, Pakistan (AFP) — Pakistani army helicopters airlifted two frostbitten mountaineers from K2 and tried to save another Monday after a catastrophic ice fall on the world's second highest peak killed 11 climbers.

The avalanche is believed to be the deadliest single incident on the 28,251-foot (8,611-metre) Himalayan peak , which is widely acknowledged as far harder to scale than Everest with a fatality rate almost five times as high.

"Two Dutch climbers were brought by our people and their colleagues down to base camp from an altitude of 7,300 metres overnight," army officer Captain Azimullah Beg told AFP by satellite telephone from K2 base camp.

"They were then picked up by army helicopter from base camp this morning and have now been shifted to hospital for treatment for severe frostbite," said Beg, identifying the climbers as Wilco Van Rooijen and Cas van de Gevel.
