The use of zero emission hydrogen fuel cells is growing, and eventually could prove viable for mainstream applications like automobiles. Leading data center technology provider APC by Schneider Electric is making the environmentally friendly energy source an option now for replacement of diesel-fueled generators and much heavier traditional batteries.

APC’s Fuel Cell Extended Run fuel cells are designed to work with three-phase uninterruptible power supply systems and provide hours of critical back-up power without harmful emissions. They can be used in locations such as high rises, where diesel systems are prohibited, and where lead acid batteries sufficient for multiple hours of protection would result in too much weight, or require too much room for storage.

The second generation fuel cells will be available in the fourth quarter.

Follow the “3 Second Rule”

As you are driving down the road - particularly at highway speeds - make sure that you give keep plenty of space between your car, truck, SUV, etc. and the vehicle in front of you. In most cases, you are giving proper spacing if you are traveling three seconds behind the car in front of you, however, you will likely need to give more time and space if you’re driving in bad weather.

By tapping your brakes, you essentially waste the energy it took to get up to and maintain the speed at which you were traveling.

This energy - both the wasted energy and the newly required energy - came from or will come from the burning of your car’s fuel.

Using less fuel tends to mean better gas mileage!

Cleveland's Historic Cultural Gardens Are Focus of Attention

It's hard to imagine a better symbol of Cleveland than the city's Cultural Gardens. That's a mixed statement, of course, which is exactly the point.

The gardens, launched formally in the mid-1920s, adorn approximately three miles of leafy Rockefeller Park from University Circle to Lake Erie on Cleveland's East Side. The park, born in the late 19th century, was conceived as a romantic swath of greenery in the tradition of New York's Central Park.

Today, however, Rockefeller Park has been reduced primarily to a parkway for automobiles, and many of the Cultural Gardens have slid into squalor.

Despite the decay, the future of the gardens and the park is brighter than it has been in decades.

Nationality groups belonging to the Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation are reinvesting in the gardens, building new monuments and staging myriad public events to bring life back to the park.

clipper's remarks: The future is not all doom and gloom, there is hope after all. This UN "State of the Future" report says, "The future continues to get better for most of the world, but a series of tipping points could drastically alter global prospects."

Despite Global Warming, racial tensions, war, famine and other real problem's we face, things are getting better for humanity as a whole and can continue to do so.

Dinosaurs were not seriously studied until just little over 100 years ago. Just 50 years ago, blacks and white were still segregated. Women still had very little in the way of rights in business, courts, and even their homes.

We have global communications on such a massive scale that anyone anywhere can practically talk to any one of 8 billion people.

The microchip, microbiology, space travel, flight, automobiles, home computers, satellites... all of these things (and more) have been available for a hundred years or less.

In the latest sign of trouble in the planet's chemistry, the number of oxygen-starved "dead zones" in coastal waters around the world has roughly doubled every decade since the 1960s, killing fish, crabs and massive amounts of marine life at the base of the food chain, according to a study released yesterday.

Low oxygen, known as hypoxia, is in significant measure a downstream effect of chemical fertilizers used in agriculture. Air pollution, including smog from automobiles, is another factor. The nitrogen from the fertilizer and the pollution feeds the growth of algae in coastal waters, particularly during summer.

We are not going to abandon gas and oil any time soon, no matter what the loudest advocates of renewable energy sources insist. As a writer noted at Fosters.com, a sane energy policy will require tuning in to a program of multiple sources. Fossil fuels -- developed and yet to be developed -- wind power nearing a scope envisioned by T. Boone Pickens, solar power, nuclear power, biomass, geothermal power and sources we haven't thought of yet are in our future - as in waaay in our future.

Apparently there's a financial reason to Nancy's madness over the drilling issue and her being a proponent of the Texas oil billionaire T. Boone Pickens' "Pickens Plan" to move our nation from foreign oil dependence to domestically produced wind power and natural gas fuel for automobiles. The plan that's touted as a cleaner, more eco-friendly alternative to our current reliance on coal power and gasoline., is a big time money maker for its investors. It's quite an interesting and profitable scheme. Madam Speaker is clearly a sleaze bag.

While Pickens deserves credit for coming up with a creative plan to reduce dependence on foreign oil (and Pelosi deserves condemnation for letting her personal agenda get in the way of what's right for America), America can't let itself be fooled into thinking that drilling here and drilling now isn't desperately needed for the foreseeable future. While using gasoline that carried a lower octane rating than the engine required was once a sure path to disaster, that is no longer the case. Nearly all automobiles sold in the United States since the 1990s will happily run on regular-grade 87-octane gasoline without causing engine damage, a benefit of the electronic controls that now manage all engine functions.

Before the switch to fuel injection and computerized controls, engines were subject to damage from prolonged knocking. But today’s engine management systems incorporate electronic knock sensors, which detect the condition and adjust the ignition to stop the problem. As a result, it is almost impossible to hurt a current engine by using 87-octane fuel, industry experts say.

“Modern engines prevent the damage from happening before it starts,” said Patrick Kelly, a fuels analyst with the American Petroleum Institute. “It wouldn’t impact fuel economy. And it wouldn’t impact the emissions. What it would impact is the performance.”

The latest scientific research indicates that there could be no ice at the North Pole this summer, while the Siberian permafrost—soil that is below freezing temperatures year round—may start melting three times faster.

The scientific consensus on global warming is that it has been caused by greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, which are emitted by fossil fuel-based power plants, automobiles and other sources.

The melting now extends 1,000 miles inland into areas that previously have been frozen all year long. As the area of sea ice decreases, less sunlight is reflected and more heat is absorbed.

It is not the case that temperatures are simply going up at a steady rate each year; instead, the quantitative change of rising temperatures appear poised to transition to a phase of qualitatively different, accelerated climate change.

The only solution to the crisis of global warming is a drastic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions

General Motors and Ford are pulling back on leasing. Chrysler and Wells Fargo Bank will stop writing new car leases altogether. Ford and BMW have already taken charges because of losses in their lease portfolio. Should the carmakers have seen this coming? Yes, but not for the reasons you might think.

That freefall in sales of gas guzzlers means that when carmakers get these three-year-old suvs back after a lease, they’re worth far less than they thought they would be. That explains why BMW took a nearly $400 million charge in the first quarter for lease problems and Ford said bad lease deals will cost it $2.1 billion.

Sales and prices of suvs have been on the wane for at least three years and the auto makers are just now pulling back on leasing. They should have seen this coming and pulled back earlier.

Most Cost Effective Vehicle Ever

In a local Shanghai suburb, one man has created what has to be one of the most cost effective automobiles ever.

The car has a very simple design, basically a bunch of wood scraps tied together with wire, four wheels, and a seat that can barely fit one person.

An open frame allows for a nice breeze, so an air conditioner is not required, and it even has a headlight.

No word on the gas mileage this things gets, but all in all the vehicle is pretty impressive.
