RICHMOND, Va. - Scientists have confirmed the second case of a "virgin birth" in a shark.

In a study reported Friday in the Journal of Fish Biology, scientists said DNA testing proved that a pup carried by a female Atlantic blacktip shark in the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center contained no genetic material from a male.

The first documented case of asexual reproduction, or parthenogenesis, among sharks involved a pup born to a hammerhead at an Omaha, Neb., zoo.

"This first case was no fluke," Demian Chapman, a shark scientist and lead author of the second study, said in a statement. "It is quite possible that this is something female sharks of many species can do on occasion."

The aquarium sharks that reproduced without mates each carried only one pup, while some shark species can produce litters numbering in the dozen or more. The scientists cautioned that the rare asexual births should not be viewed as a possible solution to declining global shark populations.

Mr. Corsi, a right-wing author who specializes in attack books, came to Kenya to publicize his newest work, “The Obama Nation,” which raises pointed questions about Mr. Obama’s history of drug use, his “extensive connections” to Islam and his relationships with Kenyan politicians, among other things — allegations that Mr. Obama’s campaign and others have widely disputed.

The chairs and microphone were all set up in one of the biggest hotels in Nairobi, the capital. Many journalists had crowded in to hear what Mr. Corsi would say about Mr. Obama, the Democratic presidential candidate whose father was Kenyan and who is adored here like a native son.

A few minutes before Mr. Corsi was to speak, more than 20 Kenyan immigration agents swooped into the hotel and arrested him. He was whisked off to the immigration office, where officials said he had misled them on his entry papers. By the end of the day, Mr. Corsi’s aides said that he was being booted from the country.

Loren Coleman, an expert on suicides and author of "The Copycat Effect," notes that suicides actually decrease during times of social and economic stress: "Historical studies conducted by sociologist Steven Stack and others have discovered a noticeable dip in suicides and related violent events when there is society-wide anguish, for example, in times of massive immediate grieving in periods of wars and economic depressions."

Though hard times may not drive you to suicide, the stress they create can be dangerous.

The role of stress in health problems, from high blood pressure and heart disease, is well established. Then there are the secondary effects of stress that trigger unhealthy behaviors such as smoking.

In times of stress, people tend to seek comfort — and comfort foods. People who are worried about their retirement and paying the bills are even more likely to want hamburgers and a night of relaxing on the couch

A blacktip shark in the wild patrols the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean.

In a study reported Friday in the Journal of Fish Biology, scientists said DNA testing proved that a pup carried by a female blacktip shark in a Virginia aquarium contained no genetic material from a male.

The first documented case of asexual reproduction, or parthenogenesis, among sharks involved a pup born to a hammerhead at an Omaha, Nebraska, zoo.

"It is very unlikely that a small number of female survivors could build their numbers up very quickly by undergoing virgin birth," Chapman said.

High speed crash makes galaxies 'sterile'

A new view of two very well-known galaxies has revealed they are connected by faint, starless filaments of hydrogen gas, which trace back to a very high-speed intergalactic collision.

The smash-up between M86 and NGC4438 had not been suspected before, and may explain why M86, which is visible to the naked eye, is unable to give birth to new stars.

"Stars and gases behave very differently in collisions," says astronomer Professor Jeffrey Kenney of Yale University and lead author of a paper in the November 2008 issue of Astrophysical Journal Letters.

During galactic smash-ups stars rarely collide, since there is so much space between them. But gases do slam into gases. The faster the collision, the higher the temperature the gases reach.

In the case of M86, its gases are millions of degrees in temperature and radiate x-rays.

The new evidence of M86's collision may solve that mystery. What's more, the super-hot gas also probably explains why M86 is unable to produce new stars.

'St John's Wort plant as effective as Prozac for treating depression', say scientists

It has long been a happy alternative for those reluctant to pop pills for depression.

But the herbal extract St John's Wort now has more than just cheerful converts to testify to its mood-lifting powers.

In what is billed as the most thorough study of the plant, scientists have found it is just as effective as Prozac at treating depression.

The study's lead author, Dr Klaus Linde, from the Centre for Complementary Medicine in Munich, pooled data from 29 studies involving 5,489 patients with mild to moderately severe depression.

'Overall, the St John's Wort extracts tested in the trials were superior to placebo, similarly effective as standard anti-depressants, and had fewer side effects than standard anti-depressants,' he said.

A "co-ordination centre" that directs a bacteria's defence systems to fight off external threats and stresses has been detailed for the first time by

British and Australian researchers

In the latest edition of Science, the team shows how the centre alerts the bacteria to danger and prompts it to create proteins to negate the threat.

Co-author Associate Professor Peter Lewis, in the School of Environmental and Life Sciences at University of Newcastle says their study has overturned previous theories of how bacteria responded to stress.

Instead of a single receptor system, the team found a network of sensors connected to a signalling hub, which they named a "stressosome".

The stressosome initiates a "global response" to the threat, which results in the creation of an army of new proteins to counterattack the threat or stress

The study, part funded Australian Research Council, may help researchers better understand the mechanisms at work in some of the world's oldest microorganisms

Do mothers inherently favor sons over daughters? They do if the mom is healthy and she is a wild horse, according to a new study on literal horseplay, but researchers suggest the equine findings could carry over to other polygynous animals, including humans.

"Polygynous" refers to species with males that can mate with more than one individual over a relatively short period of time, with the pairings all possibly resulting in pregnancies.

"Mothers are advantaged differently by investing in sons or daughters in relation to their own condition and the future reproduction of their offspring," lead author Elissa Cameron told Discovery News.

Researchers Say Ancient Tibetan Practice May Improve Health & Happiness

Data from a new Emory University study suggests that individuals who engage in “compassion meditation” based on a thousand-year-old Tibetan Buddhist mind-training practice (called "lojong" in Tibetan), appears to effectively reduce the inflammatory and behavioral responses to stress that have been linked to depression and a number of physical illnesses. The practice revolves around fostering a sense of heightened compassion for others.

"Our findings suggest that meditation practices designed to foster compassion may impact physiological pathways that are modulated by stress and are relevant to disease," explains Charles L. Raison, MD, a lead author on the study.

The study focused on the effect of compassion meditation on inflammatory, neuroendocrine and behavioral responses to psychosocial stress, and evaluated the degree to which engagement in meditation practice influenced stress reactivity.
