An Irish run public school serving 1,000 girls in Sangota Swat near Islamabad in Pakistan, has been bombed and set on fire, and “the place is completely finished.”

So said Presentation sister, Sr Julia Watson, speaking on Morning Ireland yesterday from Rawalpindi.

The four block complex, located 25km from Mingora, the main town in the province's picturesque Swat valley, was bombed in a morning attack on Tuesday and then looted, before it was later bombed again and set alight. Pakistani media reported that a nearby boys college was also blown up.

She has been working in Pakistan for the last twenty years, and said it was the first time where “something we hold very dear has been totally destroyed.”

“Such incidents remind us of the often very difficult and dangerous conditions in which the Presentation Sisters - and many Irish missionaries around the world - serve the people," he said.

A conservative columnist called McCain's campaign "stupid" for continuing to run attack ads that criticize the character of Democratic opponent Barack Obama when "they haven't worked."

"It's not a horribly mean-spirited or racist or disgraceful campaign, but it's really become a pathetic campaign," said

Kristol said one of the McCain campaign's major problems is that it is "out of sync" with its presidential candidate, who has avoided ridiculing Obama.

"If he's not willing to [say these things], adjust the campaign," Kristol said. "Otherwise, you're just setting yourself up for what we've seen, which is Senator Obama quite correctly saying What's going on here, he won't say this to me and his campaign is saying it in ads."

"McCain is an attractive, impressive character, Palin is an attractive, impressive character. Why isn't Sarah Palin on this morning instead of Rick Davis? It is ridiculous," Kristol said.

Some key decision makers in Israel fear that unless they attack Iranian nuclear enrichment facilities in the next few months, while George W Bush is still president, there will not be another period when they can rely on the United States as being anywhere near as supportive in the aftermath of a unilateral attack.

In the past 40 years there have been few occasions when I have been more concerned about a specific conflict escalating to involve, economically, the whole world. We are watching a disinformation exercise involving a number of intelligence services. Reality is becoming ever harder to disentangle.

Bill Farmer, the Australian ambassador, read a statement from Kevin Rudd, the prime minister, during a ceremony attended by about 100 people at the Australian consulate on Sunday.

The attack, said to have been carried out by members of Jemaah Islamiyah, an Islamist group primarily based in South Asia, claimed the lives of 202 people from 22 countries.

Australia had the most victims, with 88 people killed.

"The 12 October 2002 tragedy shocked Australia. For those who lost loved ones, life will never be the same," Rudd said in the statement.

"We think of the families and friends of the victims. Our thoughts and sympathies will always be with them."

Rudd praised Indonesia for the crackdown it carried out in the wake of the worst attack in the region.

An elite 13-year-old athlete who dreamed of becoming the next Andy Murray died for 15 minutes but has miraculously survived.

Healthy teenager James Doherty is one of the youngest people in the UK to have suffered a heart attack and made a complete recovery.

The champion sportsman had a cardiac arrest while playing tennis and defied all odds to be brought back from the dead after he was given emergency CPR within seconds of collapsing.

He has now been hailed 'a miracle' by doctors at Great Ormond Street in London.

'The doctor who treated him said he was unique and it was extraordinarily miraculous that he survived,' said mum Sarah, 48.

I've been told that after your heart stops for more than 10 minutes your chances of survival are really remote.'

Pakistan tribes raze Taliban houses after bombing

KOHAT, Pakistan - Angry Pakistani tribesmen traded fire with Taliban militants and demolished their houses in a northwestern tribal region after a car suicide attack killed at least 30 people, residents said on Saturday.

Television channels put the death toll at as high as 70.

The bomber drove his explosive-laden car into the middle of a tribal council meeting in Orakzai tribal region on Friday where hundreds of tribesmen were discussing a government-backed plan to raise a lashkar or tribal militia to force militants out of the region.

"Everyone is angry and upset here. The tribesmen attacked houses of the Taliban in Khadizai after the bombing. Two houses have been demolished," Noorzad Orakzai, a resident of the Khadizai area where attack took place, told Reuters by telephone.

The attack in Orakzai came a day after a suicide blast inside the heavily guarded police headquarters in the capital Islamabad in which eight policemen were wounded.

But why should that give him a one-upmanship over Obama... as far as fair reporting is concerned? Maybe corporate media has more to gain under republican rule or maybe it's just that they fear a McCain attack because they've taken note of how McMean and his Cold-Hearted-VP pick's, mean-spirited, hateful innuendoes launched against Obama have stirred the "Republican base of loathing", to get "physical" with any contrived foe. In between, he confronted a hurricane that nearly wiped New Orleans off the map as his administration showed ineptitude in its response.

Now, as he spends his last months in office trying to avert a global economic collapse, Mr. Bush has been telling people privately that it’s a good thing he’s in charge.

Mr. Bush has always been confident of himself, even when the American public was not, and that has not changed. Just as he is convinced he did the right thing in Iraq, he is convinced he is doing the right thing on the economy — despite job approval ratings at historic lows and a presidential campaign in which both candidates have used him as kind of a battering ram.
