ATHENS, GA–Captivated by her adorability and off-the-charts hipness, the U.S. populace sheepishly admitted a deep infatuation with 22-year-old Danielle Metzler, that amazing girl with the multi-colored hair who works at Slipped Discs in Athens.

"[Metzler] works at the coolest record store in Athens, and she's totally up on all the latest stuff," said Ryan Griggs, 48, a television repairman from Salem, OR. "You have no idea how many people go in there every day and buy some obscure Go-Betweens B-sides collection or the latest Stephin Merritt side project just to try to impress her."

"I couldn't believe it," Griggs said. "For 45 glorious seconds, it was just me and her talking about bands like Tipsy and Jazzanova."

Informed of the nation's crush, Metzler shrugged her shoulders. "That's cool," she said, "but lately I've been more into British guys." She then returned to sorting CDs.

Halloween fest may grow a beer garden

In a move modeled in part on Columbus' annual ComFest celebration, Athens Mayor Paul Wiehl plans to allow a "beer garden" where partyers 21 or older can legally sip suds on the street in a fenced-in area while they listen to live music.

The city will split the revenue with whichever distributor is chosen to supply the beer garden. The money will be used to help defray city costs for policing the party and cleaning up afterward.

RENO, Nev. – A few tents cropped up hard by the railroad tracks, pitched by men left with nowhere to go once the emergency winter shelter closed for the summer.

Then others appeared — people who had lost their jobs to the ailing economy, or newcomers who had moved to Reno for work and discovered no one was hiring.

Within weeks, more than 150 people were living in tents big and small, barely a foot apart in a patch of dirt slated to be a parking lot for a campus of shelters Reno is building for its homeless population. Like many other cities, Reno has found itself with a "tent city" — an encampment of people who had nowhere else to go.

From Seattle to Athens, Ga., homeless advocacy groups and city agencies are reporting the most visible rise in homeless encampments in a generation.

Cheers and applause rang out at Heathrow as a triumphant British Paralympic team arrived home from the Beijing Games.

Greeted with flags and camera flashes, the team collectively bought back 102 medals, including 42 golds, finishing second in the medals table behind the host nation.

Gold medallist Helene Raynsford, dressed in the now familiar uniform of white and blue tracksuit, said the welcoming reception began as soon as she came off the plane.

The crowds were much bigger than those of four years ago, when 2008 bronze medallist Anthony Stephens returned from Athens with a clutch of medals

While the homecoming crowds were a boost to the athletes after the long-haul flight, those who travelled to China to see events first-hand were appreciated too.

Rachel Morris, gold medallist in cycling, said the union flags flying in Beijing had made a real difference.

The group says the problem has worsened since the report's release in April, with foreclosures mounting, gas and food prices rising and the job market tightening.

"It's clear that poverty and homelessness have increased," said Michael Stoops, acting executive director of the coalition. "The economy is in chaos, we're in an unofficial recession and Americans are worried, from the homeless to the middle class, about their future."

Treasure trove uncovered in ancient Macedonian cemetery

An ancient cemetery in northern Greece has yielded gold jewellery, copper and iron weapons and pottery in a new excavation.

Archaeologists digging in part of a vast burial ground near Pella, the ancient Macedonians' capital, have unearthed 43 new graves.

The dead included 20 warriors who had been buried in the Archaic period, between 580-480 B.C., with copper helmets and iron swords, daggers and spearheads.

Ornaments of gold foil - specially made for funerals - covered their mouths, eyes and chests, according to the Greek Culture Ministry.

A total of 915 graves have been excavated over the past eight years at the site of Arhontiko, about 330 miles north-west of Athens. Archaeologists estimate this represents just five percent of the cemetery.
