Is he who he says he is?

Barack Hussein Obama is a Christian. We know this, he told us so. We've all seen the pesky emails stating that Obama is really a Muslim. His campaign came out and made a point of telling us that he is a Christian. He even sat down at a diner in Iowa to chat with some supporters and set the record straight about his background:

Barack Hussein Obama, Sr. was born in Kenya to a Muslim family. When he died in 1982, he was buried as a Muslim. Under Islamic law, if your birth father is a Muslim, then so are you. Obama may not see himself that way, but the Muslim world does. Barack Obama's half brothers and sisters are also Muslim. His half-brother Roy (now named Abongo) is a Luo militant Muslim activist in Kenya.

Obama says his mother was a Christian, but an LA Times reporter looked into her background and found that she was, at best, agnostic and that Obama's grandparents were atheists.

Groups Wants Atheists Included In DNC Interfaith Service

Democratic National Convention's Aug. 24 interfaith service in Denver is supposed to be about unity.

But to a Washington, D.C., coalition that supports nontheistic views, it's about division.

The Secular Coalition Group, a lobbying organization for church-and-state separation, is pushing to get an atheist on the speaker list, and contends the service is divisive because it alienates nonreligious Democrats at a time when the party needs to unite to support the presumptive nominee, Sen. Barack Obama.

"We can all hold different beliefs," said the group's executive director, Lori Lipman Brown, "but we can still come together as patriotic Americans."

Natalie Wyeth, a convention spokesperson, said Wednesday that everyone, regardless of belief, is welcome at the public service, but would not address if an atheist would be added to the speaker list.

Is science in danger of becoming its own religion? That’s what Karl Giberson is worried about. In a recent essay in Salon, he questions whether hardcore atheists such as P.Z. Myers, a biologist at the University of Minnesota at Morris and author of the popular pro-atheism (or rather, anti-religion) blog Pharyngula, are replacing religious fundamentalism with a new kind of absolutism: The belief that science (as opposed to God) holds the answer to every question in the universe, and religion is nothing more than a scam.

In “Atheism Remix: A Christian Confronts the New Atheism” (Crossway), Mohler engages the central arguments of four contemporary atheists, whom he calls “The Four Horseman of the Atheist Apocalypse:” Oxford University scientist Richard Dawkins, Tufts University philosopher Daniel Dennett, author Sam Harris and pundit Christopher Hitchens.

Mohler, who serves as president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, chose Dawkins, Dennett, Harris and Hitchens because “they are four figures who have especially come to embody the New Atheist movement.”

The new atheism is marked by:
· An unprecedented new boldness.
· A clear and specific rejection of the Christian God of the Bible.
· An explicit rejection of Jesus Christ.
· Arguments grounded in science.
· A refusal to tolerate even moderate and liberal forms of theism.
· An attack on the toleration of any form of religion.
· A questioning of the right of parents to instill religious beliefs in their children.

There's something about these new atheists, for whom P.Z. Myers is a folk hero, that's profoundly inhuman. "The ridicule is [their] goal; the contempt is the end; the sheer fun of sanctimony, self-righteousness and loathing are the purpose," writes a nonreligious blogger named Freddie (lhote.blogspot.com), distancing himself from the rancid preening of the Myers mob. "This is classic adversary philosophy: I think this thing is true because in its being true it debases you and elevates me."

"I pierced it with a rusty nail (I hope Jesus' tetanus shots are up to date)," the University of Minnesota-Morris biologist wrote. "And then I simply threw it in the trash."

The militant atheist photographed his sacrilege, which also included his tearing a page from the Quran and soiling it with banana peels and coffee grounds.

The hateful Dr. Myers and his spittle-flecked supporters insist that their right to profane symbols that Catholics and Muslims hold most sacred is absolute and sacrosanct.

But his audacious act of sacrilege crossed an important moral, social and psychological line, one that calls up metaphorical demons that, once summoned, are difficult to control. It is one thing to say that belief in God is foolish and wicked and that Catholicism and Islam deserve scorn. It is quite another to physically desecrate the artifacts believers hold sacred.

The Eucharist is merely a "sad little cracker," Dr. Myers wrote, and the Quran nothing more than words on paper.

So I’m a bit confused about the term “militant atheist”

It’s kind of weird because “militant” has a very clear definition of violence and war and physical force, and this is all completely absent in the recent rise of atheism in our culture. Out of our entire langauge, it’s a very odd word to choose

I don’t think calling Richard Dawkins and others “militant atheists” is a fitting label, especially because we know what militant islam and militant christianity looks like:

Belief in God symbolically evaporated when more than a hundred atheists were "de-baptized" with a blow dryer yesterday.

"Do you agree that the magical potency of today's ceremony is exactly equal to the magical efficacy of ceremonial baptism with dihydrogen oxide, and do you agree that the power of all magical ceremonies is nonexistent?" Frank Zindler, president of American Atheists, said to launch the de-baptism.

After a resounding "amen" from the audience, the first person in line yelled, "Dry me brother! I'm free!" The crowd laughed as each person squeezed his or her eyes shut and walked underneath the blow dryer.

I lived in a constant state of terror as a child. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that Satan the Devil and his demon hordes are real. They espouse a near hysterical fear of demons, even though this is not always as evident in their literature. According to Jehovah’s Witnesses, demons reside upon and rule over this world. They believe that demons may attack humans, psychologically, physically, and sexually.

I usually think that Richard Dawkins is overstating things when he calls religion child abuse. But in a case like this, I absolutely see what he means. And this is part of what atheists are talking about when we say that religion gets a free ride. If this sort of terror were being foisted upon a child in the name of anything other than religion — in the name of political beliefs, for instance — society would recoil in horror. Why does religion get a free pass?

The fellow in question had sent an irate letter to the Laurel and Hardy apologetics team of Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron, complaining about an insulting anti-atheist bumper sticker they were selling online.

Your Item #500 Atheist Day bumper sticker is a very un-Christian insult to all atheists. Just because your Bible states something, does not mandate that you use this information to insult atheists like me.

I am not a fool, and I want you to change the wording of your sticker. The average driver can easily read the words:

NATIONAL ATHEIST'S DAY
APRIL 1ST

Then, as the letter progresses, you can see his emotions starting to run away with him.

I understand that the U.S. Constitution guarantees you freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and freedom of the press. However, that does not give you unlimited license to publicly insult those who do not share your beliefs.

Uh...well, yeah, dude. It does.

Free speech is exactly that. Insults are not illegal.

My faith and commitment as a follower of Jesus won't let me decide based solely on party, litmus test, emotional appeal, or group affiliation

I see a wide range of issues that are all in play with varying degrees of weight

And because my faith commits me to a concern for "the common good,"

I must have a special concern for the poor and vulnerable, and must even take the needs of my enemies into account

I can't simply vote on what's best for Christians

My Christian commitment obligates me to ask what's best for Muslims, Jews, atheists, Buddhists, and others

what's best for birds of the air, flowers of the field, and fish of the sea too. Since they don't have a vote, I need to try to speak on their behalf. And as a citizen of God's kingdom, which transcends all national boundaries, I can't simply vote based on what's best for U.S. citizens: My vote has to have in mind the good of Mexicans, Canadians, Iraqis, Iranians, Chinese, and Burundians as well.

Christians demand removal of 'satanic' 10 Commandments

A Christian organization is pressuring the community of Elberton, Ga., to tear down a massive, granite monument that lists an alternative set of Ten Commandments that the organization labels satanic.

The monument, known as the Georgia Guidestones, was built under a cloud of mystery in 1980. It lists 10 commandments in eight different languages, including a call to establish a new world language, limit human population to 500 million and avoid being "a cancer on the Earth."

"We have atheists and Satanists getting the Bible's Ten Commandments removed from public property," said Mark Dice, spokesman for the group The Resistance, "yet the satanic Georgia Guidestones have stood for decades, and nobody seems to care. Well, we do."

Since the land the monument sits upon is owned by a private trust and is not public property, Dice said, the battle against the monument will have to take place in the court of public opinion, rather than a court of law.

Council ban on atheist websites

A city council has blocked its staff from looking at websites about atheism.

Lawyers at the National Secular Society said the move by Birmingham City Council was "discriminatory" and they would consider legal action.

The rules also ban sites that promote witchcraft, the paranormal, sexual deviancy and criminal activity.

The city council declined to comment on the possible legal action, but said the new system helped make it easier for managers to monitor staff web access.

Under the Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003, it is unlawful to discriminate against workers because of their religion or belief, which includes atheism.

National Secular Society president Terry Sanderson said the city council's rules also discriminated against people who practise witchcraft, which is also classed as a legitimate belief.

He said the society would initially contact the council and ask for the policy to be changed, and otherwise pursue legal action.
