Saimir Strati

Saimir Strati (Vlora, Albania, April 11, 1966) is an Albanian artist who is regarded as one of the world's most well known modern mosaic artists.

He has used materials including nails, toothpicks, corks, sea glass, eggshells, compact discs, coffee beans, porcelain and mirror glass among other materials. He is also a painter.

Every world record attempt has Saimir Strati has attempted has been a live performance. He has also done large scale artistic performances in Dubai.

Esref Armaga is an exceptionally talented artist from Turkey. What sets him apart is he was born without eyes.

Esref, from an early age, had a better grasp of perspective and proportion than many sighted artists, which based on everything science knows about sight, should have been absolutely impossible.

As a visual artist, I found it very difficult to accept and understand that a man without eyes could paint accurate and beautiful landscapes, even seascapes, without ever having "seen" them.

The video's slightly long but absolutely worth watching.

Rock Hall will honor music innovator Les Paul

clipper's remarks: In 1952, Gibson introduced the Les Paul model, which became the instrument of choice for musicians such as Duane Allman, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page.

"It's not just his innovation and his musical playing, but sort of the residual effects of that guitar," Stewart said. "It's become the beginning point for so many people in music, particularly rock music."

Paul still performs weekly at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York City. He was inducted into the early influence category of the Rock Hall in 1988.

Paul is only the second living recipient of the annual American Music Masters award, which began in 1996 to pay tribute to artists who helped change American culture. Jerry Lee Lewis was the first living recipient in 2007. Past recipients include Woody Guthrie, Muddy Waters and Sam Cooke.

Rock Hall will honor music innovator Les Paul

CLEVELAND - The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will pay tribute to the "father of the electric guitar" this fall.

Les Paul will be honored at the annual American Music Masters series, a weeklong event that begins Nov. 10, Rock Hall officials said Tuesday. A tribute concert — artists will be named later — is scheduled Nov. 15 at Cleveland's State Theater.

Paul, 93, is hoping to attend, said Rock Hall President and CEO Terry Stewart.

Paul began playing guitar as a child and by 13 was performing semiprofessionally as a country-music guitarist. He later made his mark as a jazz-pop musician, recording hits like "How High the Moon" with his wife, singer Colleen Summers, better known as Mary Ford. They divorced in 1964.

He built a solid-body electric guitar in 1941 — an invention born from his frustration that audiences were unable to hear him play.

World Body Painting Festival 2008 in South Korea

Daegu in South Korea is playing host to the World Bodypainting Festival, it's the largest bodypainting event on the planet.

The main festival is held every year in Seeboden, Austria, but expanded into Asia for the first time this year with a bonus exhibition. It lasts until 31 August.

The World Bodypainting Festival is the biggest annual event of the body painting culture and community. The festival is the first of its kind in the world and has become the “Mecca of Bodypainting”. It draws over a hundred artists and models, and thousands of visitors, from all over the world every year.

From across the country activists have converged on San Francisco for the 'Slow Food Nation" rally

These activists insist that consuming non-local foods harms the environment, exploits workers, severs community ties, and numbs our taste buds.

Why not also reject non-local news - such as this very report from San Francisco? And why not also reject non-local culture? Surely we Washingtonians would be happier and more in touch with ourselves if we read only novels written by locals such as Christopher Buckley and not those written by the likes of Milan Kundera, Margaret Atwood, or Larry McMurtry. And what's with the Kennedy Center bringing in performers from outside the Beltway? How much CO2 is unnecessarily emitted into the atmosphere whenever the Kirov Ballet flies in from St. Petersburg or when James Levine comes down from Boston? And how many local artists do we overlook in our thoughtless insistence on seeing non-local acts performed on our local stages?
