If you want a tree for the holiday, the experts at Grist and TreeHugger say it's actually better to buy a cut real Christmas tree than an artificial tree.

Why? In a word, plastics. Fake trees are made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Producing this type of plastic creates a lot of pollution, and PVC is difficult to recycle.

Plus, lead has been found in PVC. According to a report (PDF) in the Journal of Environmental Health, lead levels are higher in older artificial trees. You've probably heard about lead in children's toys, so just imagine the kiddos hanging around lead-tainted branches of your fake Christmas tree. Not a merry scene.

Artificial and pre-lit Christmas trees may not be so charming, with their lead-based chemicals that could potentially cause cancer.

KXAN Austin News received e-mails from two different concerned viewers who bought different brands of pre-lit artificial trees with health warnings on the packaging about lead in the lights.

Both said the warning was in tiny print and only in English, so it could be easy to miss.

"We read on the box that it said 'contains toxic chemicals and lead' and to be sure and wash our hands," said Albert Sander.

"Everybody touches it, puts it together," said Melody Hunley. "It's in your face, and the cord is all throughout it, because it's a pre-lit tree, so you can't really avoid it."

The pre-lit artificial trees are being sold at multiple locations. The trees mentioned were purchased Garden Ridge and Family Dollar locations.

Customers should check the packaging for the warnings in fine print.

With everything going on in the environment, this is not the time to be cutting down trees.

FRIDAY, Nov. 16 (HealthDay News) -- While bringing home a live Christmas tree marks the beginning of the holiday season for many, the mold that thrives on its branches can trigger weeks of suffering for some, a new study shows.

Connecticut researchers have found that the mold count from a live Christmas tree rose to five times the normal level two weeks after the tree was brought indoors, and that can prove problematic for people with mold allergies.

An artificial tree may be a better option for people with mold allergies

but they carry their own set of problems, especially if they've been stored in the attic or basement where they can collect dust and mold

For some people who are sensitive to odors, the aroma from the tree, which most people like, could irritate their nose and cause symptoms

Store Christmas decorations in plastic containers that you can wipe off, since cardboard can potentially have mold
