A jar of yummy Larval Old Ones in Ichor:

several pounds of fresh mushrooms
medium or large canning jar, with lid
salt (optional)
microwave oven
pressure cooker

This is a good recipe for storing mushrooms if your grocery gets stuck with a bunch of aging mushrooms and puts them on sale dead cheap. Mushrooms with large rounded heads look creepiest. Portobellos are good as long as their telltale edges don't show.

The trick is that only the first quarter-inch or so of the mushrooms will be visible through the liquid they throw off, so what you get is a jar of nearly-opaque inky fluid filled with pallid, mottled, suggestively rounded shapes pressed against the glass. It really does look creepy. If you want, you can add a label saying Larval Old Ones, Preserved in Their Ichor, or similar sentiments.

When you get tired of your artifact, the mushrooms in their juice can be used in cream of mushroom soup, added to pot roast or London broil, or whatever you please.

The history of Eastern Canada is generally viewed in two stages: 1st - recent history, measured in decades and centuries, involving the early, white settlers and 2nd - the early history, measured in many centuries and millennia, represented by petroglyphs, stone mounds and arrow heads that takes us several hundred, sometimes a thousand or two years back into North America's native past.

A third stage may now have to be added: the ancient past, when the landscape hardly resembled the forest clad hills of today and the environment was just recovering from thousands of years of glaciation. Some ten thousand years ago, human populations were not measured in thousands or even millions like today, but dozens, or at best hundreds. Even this handful of ancestors managed to leave us proof of their existence. In a cold lake in remote Central Ontario a possible artifact has been recently discovered.

Why Not Test the Phaistos Disc?

If there are suspicions that the renowned Phaistos Disc is fake, why not address them by determining its age? That was the excellent question raised by Lab readers in response to a post on the disc. The short answer is that the keepers of the disc — the Herakleion Archaeological Museum in Crete, where the purportedly ancient artifact was found a century ago — won’t allow it.

For a longer answer, I consulted Jerome M. Eisenberg, the editor-in-chief of Minerva and the author of the article in that archaeological journal questioning the disc’s authenticity. He provided more details, and also addressed other questions raised by Lab readers. He told me that he has been trying for many years to test the disk (as well as another artifact at the museum, the Archalochori Axe, which he considers suspicious):

For 20 years the archaeological community believed the artifacts had been destroyed or had disappeared into the antiquities market as a succession of mujahideen warlords won and lost control of Kabul. Finally the Taliban came, and smashed any artifact that seemed vaguely like a religious idol. The Roswell Rock

The Roswell Daily Record reports that a strange rock recently discovered outside Roswell, New Mexico may be an alien artifact. The small brownish rock, measuring less than two inches across, was found in September 2004 by a local businessman named Robert Ridge who discovered it while deer hunting in Cedar Hill, 17 miles away from the spot where a UFO supposedly crash landed near Roswell over sixty years ago.

The rocks odd shape, intricate carvings, and strange magnetic properites has sparked interest in scientists, anthropologists, ufologists, and even the town mayor of Roswell. The design on the rock appears to have been made with no discernible marks of drilling or cutting, which has caused anthropologists to be perplexed as to its possible origins.

Every year for the past couple of decades, scientists have tried to estimate the size of the dead zone that forms where the Mississippi River enters the Gulf of Mexico.

The dead zone is technically an area of hypoxia, or low oxygen content, first detected in the early 1970s. A decade later scientists realized it was caused largely by agricultural nitrogen — and some urban effluent — washed downstream from farms throughout the Mississippi watershed

The mechanisms that create the dead zone are entirely natural — algae feeding and dying — but there is nothing natural about the zone itself. It is almost entirely an artifact of modern agriculture, accompanied by treated and untreated sewage and industrial runoff.

There could be no starker reminder of the tragic human tendency to treat the oceans as dumping grounds.

Within hours of the story's publication, the Internet and blogosphere erupted in wild debate over the small red rock with magnetic properties, engraved with what appears to be moon phases, a supernova and an eclipse.

"I'm not a geologist," he said. "The rock is surely strange looking, but when someone showed me a picture of crop circles in Europe exactly like the design on the rock, I believe that someone may have created the image, for whatever reason."

Their statement concluded: "What's interesting about this artifact is the magnetic polarity. The top side with the design will spin a compass needle, but it does not do that on the underneath side. The compass needle just moves back and forth, and will not spin. So the design itself is creating a magnetic polarity."

Scriptural scholars are abuzz over a stone tablet that is said to bear previously unknown prophecies about a Jewish messiah who would rise from the dead in three days. But there are far more questions than answers about the tablet, which some have suggested could represent "a new Dead Sea Scroll in stone."

Do the tablet and the inked text really date back to the first century B.C., as claimed? Where did the artifact come from? Can the gaps in the text be filled in to make sense? Is the seeming reference to a coming resurrection correct, and to whom does that passage refer? Finally, what impact would a pre-Christian reference to suffering, death and resurrection have on Christian scholarship?
