Fring VOIP and chat client goes mainstream

The iPhone app Fring, which acts as a VOIP client for Skype and other internet phone networks, as well as a voice and chat interface into IM networks like AIM and Yahoo, is now available for free to everyone. Previously it only ran on Jailbroken iPhones, severely limiting its audience.

On the iPhone, Fring can read both your IM and Skype buddy lists as well as the contacts in your phone's address book, and when you select a contact, you get the option of calling him or her by SIP call, Skype, or standard cellular. VOIP calls obviously don't count against your cellular minutes, but you do need to have a WiFi connection to make the calls.

IPhone Steals Lead Over Kindle

It's official: The iPhone is more popular than Amazon.com's Kindle. And not just in the obvious categories like listening to music, browsing the Web or the other applications where Kindle barely competes. Now, the iPhone is also muscling into Amazon's home turf: reading books.

Stanza, a book reading application offered in Apple's (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ) iPhone App Store since July, has been downloaded more than 395,000 times and continues to be installed at an average rate of about 5,000 copies a day, according to Portland, Ore.-based Lexcycle, the three-person start-up that created the reading software.

By comparison, Citigroup estimates Amazon will sell around 380,000 Kindles in 2008. Forrester Research analyst James McQuivey expects Sony's (nyse: SNE - news - people ) Reader will sell only a fraction of that number. In other words, Apple may have inadvertently sold more e-readers than any other company in the nascent digital book market.

If you're driving to a meeting and realize you're going to be late, what do you do? Pick up the phone and call ahead, right? But this means, possibly, trying to find the number for the person you're meeting with, which can be dangerous if you're in motion. And possibly illegal.

Mobile app Oops I'm Late does the calling for you. It runs on GPS-equipped Windows smartphones. If you start the app and give it access to your calendar so it knows where and when your next appointment is, it will automatically fire off text messages to the contacts in a meeting when it detects that you can't possibly make it in time. Optionally, it can also tell people how far away you are and your ETA.

The new version works with Twitter and Facebook to send both public and private messages.

There are free and paid versions. No word of iPhone support, and I have not put my hands on this product to try it. Love the idea, though.

CBSEyemobile gets an eyefull

Like a lot of news networks, CBS jumped on the citizen journalism bandwagon with a free iPhone app, Eyemobile for iPhone, to make it easy for users to upload news to its user-generated news site, CBSeyemobile.com.

Interesting, though, the citizens' definition of "news."

Karl Johnson, chief operating officer of BrandContent, a Boston-based agency, uploaded the app last night and saw a picture of a young woman bent over her kitchen stove, her skirt hiked up. Later he saw video of three women performing sexual acts on one another.

What's more, Google is advertising on the clips via AdMob.

Enabling users to easily upload video is a hot trend among the TV news networks. And several have jumped on the iPhone as a tool for citizen journalists. In addition to CBS, Fox News, CNN and The Associated Press all have iPhone apps that allow users to submit video of breaking news.

Retrieving common Windows folder names with Python

Often using Windows, you'll need to get the names of special folders, like "App Data," "Local App Data," "My Documents," and "My Pictures." This is especially true in Vista, where the recommended practice of writing app-specific data to the (Local) App Data directory is being enforced.

In addition, I've written a simple module that does this. It depends only on ctypes, and provides a simpler interface to the Windows shell API. Usage:

clipper's remarks: This new app is a great way to brainstorm ideas whilst on the go. I use this to and from work so I can plan lessons or produce essay plans for students. Most mindmapping software available on the PC can be expensive. This app allows you to edit the app only on the iPhone but when e-mailed as a PNG furthur editing can take place on the home PC or Mac. This is more limited but it does me that the mind-map can be shared and titled. A PDF export function is great for ensuring your ideas are not altered by others. This app has strong editing features and its userface is clear and simple. Whilst the cost is a little higher than I would hope, there is no denying its functionality. It can be used by students planning out their essays and by staff working out their lessons, schemes of work and building resources

iPhone software 2.2 beta sports UI tweaks; no push

A couple of details have begun to trickle out about iPhone 2.2, the next revision to the iPhone/iPod touch software. According to a piece at AppleInsider, Apple has released beta 1 of firmware 2.2 to developers that features a number of small UI tweaks.

Some naughty developer must have violated their Apple NDA agreement – tsk, tsk.

The Google search field in mobile Safari has been moved to the immediate right of the address bar (pictured). Currently you need to tap the address bar to bring up the Google search field.

Apple has also re-organized the App Store slightly with large category icons. They also made the “Tell a Friend” option more prominent and added an equally prominent “Report a Problem” button – presumably to report tethering and flatulence applications that slip through Apple’s screening process.

tap tap tap exists in somewhat of a virtual state… we have no central office and everyone involved is in a different part of the world. So how do we work efficiently on our projects?

Phill explained that he’d often hire Wolfgang for a whole workday interactive “session”. John was pretty skeptical about this method, mainly because he felt there’d be too much downtime for him between design iterations. But Phill recommended that he at least try this once with Wolfgang.

The present: enter Skitch

Our take on Skitch was that it was pretty much a fun, little app used to add annotations to and draw little doodles on pics. Most of our experiences with it had been with Austin Sarner using it to torture his friends.

There are numerous complaints that customers have about Apple's App Store. You can't try an app before you buy it, no refunds on apps, false app reviews, and from a developer's standpoint, too many restrictions and rules. Apple is now trying to fix at least one of those problems. The App Store now requires users to purchase an app before they can provide a review of it.
