Fort Hood shootings suspect may have wired money to Pakistan Dallas Morning News

Authorities have been examining whether Fort Hood massacre suspect Nidal Malik Hasan wired money to Pakistan in recent months, an action that one senior lawmaker said would raise serious questions about Hasan's possible connections to militant Islamic groups.

Hoekstra, the ranking Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, would not identify the sources. But he said "they are trying to follow up on it because they recognize that if there are communications – phone or money transfers with somebody in Pakistan – it just raises a whole other level of questions."

Homeless woman saves child

JOLIET, Ill., June 24 (UPI) -- Police in Joliet, Ill., are crediting a homeless woman with saving a 10-year-old girl from being kidnapped and sexually assaulted.

The woman told police she was parking her car when she saw a man approach the girl and try to force her to go with him, the Joliet Herald-News reported Wednesday.

Instead of walking away, the woman confronted the man, told him to leave and watched as he walked across the street to his apartment building.

"She called 911 and stayed with the girl," says Joliet Police Chief Fred Hayes but then disappeared once officers arrived.

The suspect, identified as Alfredo Guzman, 52, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of child abduction.

"Had it not been for this brave and courageous citizens, I can't even think of the horrible things that would've occurred if he'd gotten her into that residence," Hayes said.

Police later found the Good Samaritan at a local homeless shelter.

The opening credits scroll over a raucous rave-up in a cramped apartment, with revelers—white and black—boozing and singing along to an impromptu jam. Without a word of dialogue the demimonde is established—this is not Don Draper's Manhattan. Shadows centers on three siblings: Benny (Ben Carruthers), a brooding beatnik and unemployed trumpet player; Lelia (Lelia Goldoni), the innocent little sister who puts up a worldly front; and Hughie (Hugh Hurd), the oldest and a struggling jazz musician. The three are African-American, but only Hughie looks it—both Benny and Lelia are light-skinned enough to pass for white.

FORT HOOD, Tex. — Staff Sgt. Gilberto Mota, 35, and his wife, Diana, 30, an Army specialist, had returned to Fort Hood from Iraq last year when he used his gun to kill her, and then took his own life, the authorities say. In July, two members of the First Cavalry Division, also just back from the war with decorations for their service, were at a party when one killed the other.

That same month, Staff Sgt. Justin Lee Garza, 28, under stress from two deployments, killed himself in a friend’s apartment outside Fort Hood, four days after he was told no therapists were available for a counseling session. “What bothers me most is this happened while he was supposed to be on suicide watch,” said his mother, Teri Smith. “To this day, I don’t know where he got the gun.”

Amber Alert!! Missing 2 Year Old Girl

Maine police have issued the state's first Amber Alert for a missing 2-year-old girl who was taken by her father after he allegedly assaulted the girl's mother at her Sanford apartment.

Authorities are searching for 38-year-old Gary Traynham and his daughter, Hailey, who was taken from her mother at 11:15 a.m. Monday.

This is the first Amber Alert issued in Maine since the system went into effect in December of 2008.

Police believe Traynham and the girl may be in eastern New Hampshire.

Traynham is driving a 1998 green Dodge 1500 pickup truck with Maine registration 8629NB.

He is described as 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing 230 pounds with balding brown hair, hazel eyes and a dark goatee. Police say the girl has shoulder-length blond hair and blue eyes.
