Dozens Detained Ahead of Convention

ST. PAUL, Minn. — On the weekend before the Republican National Convention, law enforcement agencies detained dozens of people and issued a series of search warrants aimed at groups believed to be organizing demonstrations while delegates and Republican officials are in town.

Police released one person at a time from a protest-planning headquarters where people were detained in St. Paul on Friday night.

On Friday night the Ramsey County sheriff's department, accompanied by the St. Paul police, detained people inside a building here that was being used as a headquarters to plan protests.

“They handcuffed all of us,” said Sonia Silbert, 28, from Washington. “They searched everyone.”

People who had been inside said teach-ins and legal training had been conducted there, and that the space was also a repository for such items as computers and bicycles.

Israel's Easiest Target - Part 1

This short piece titled Israel's Easiest Target documents the systematic use of degradation and humiliation by the Israeli government targetting innocent women and children.

A group of Palestinian women and a Holocaust survivor in exile speak of Israel's systematic method of humiliation and degradation of women and children in the occupied territories.

These specific instances are clearly just but one piece of a larger policy aimed at suppressing any remaining identity of the Palestinian people. Such policies reflect the unchanged Israeli motive of ethnically cleansing Palestine of all Arabs. McCain also announced this week that two of his closest allies, Sens. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) and Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.), would travel to Georgia’s capital of Tbilisi on his behalf, after a similar journey by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

The extent of McCain’s involvement in the military conflict in Georgia appears remarkable among presidential candidates, who traditionally have kept some distance from unfolding crises out of deference to whoever is occupying the White House. The episode also follows months of sustained GOP criticism of Democratic Sen. Barack Obama, who was accused of acting too presidential for, among other things, briefly adopting a campaign seal and taking a trip abroad that included a huge rally in Berlin. Obama made a speech and shook hands w/ people. He was criticized for meddling in foreign policy.

In the last year she lent Shavian barbs to the Guthrie's Major Barbara, then anchored the Blue Battleship's nicely realized premiere of Brian Friel's The Home Place with a light touch that underscored the work's conflicted take on Irish sovereignty. Most recently she appeared in the one-woman The Syringa Tree at the Jungle, a completely assured and accomplished evening that compelled her to play a little girl, her mother, and myriad members of an apartheid-era South African household. Surely someone so versatile has boatloads of craft to draw on; Agnew's trick is to always make her work seem freshly inspired.

And if you're a loved one of someone who made the ultimate sacrifice, remember that Senator McCain seems to think that your loved one died for something so trivial that it doesn't even break the "crisis" threshold.

McCain is still trying to use the Russian-Georgian conflict to play up his supposed national security credentials. Another day, another illustration of McCain's national security mindset being stuck in the cold war:

This of course comes on the heels of this gem from last month:

"The fact is we had four years of failed policy. We were losing. We were losing the war in Iraq. The consequences of failure and defeat of the United States of America in the first major conflict since 9/11 would have had devastating impacts throughout the region and the world."

Israeli Settlers Increase Violence Against Palestinians

7 August '08: Increase in settler violence

B'Tselem is investigating twelve cases of settler attacks on Palestinian between 29 July and 4 August. These cases reflect a sharp increase in reports of such violence, and represent a peak to an escalation that has been underway over the past few weeks. The cases recent took place across the West Bank, with a majority in South Mount Hebron and the settlements around Nablus.

Five of the cases involved stone throwing; in two livestock were stolen; one included gunfire, five physical assaults, and three involved property damage (some of the cases included more than one kind of abuse). In some of the cases, law-enforcement authorities failed to apprehend suspects. In the two thefts of livestock, police apparently did not return the livestock to their owners. At least four of the cases involve minors.

In one case of assault, a woman in her sixth month of pregnancy and her two daughters were hurt

Inquiry Launched After Film Shows Israeli Soldier Firing Rubber Bullet at Palestinian at Close Range

JERUSALEM - An Israeli human rights group released video footage last night showing an Israeli soldier firing a rubber-coated bullet at close range at a Palestinian man who had already been detained, blindfolded and cuffed.

B’Tselem said it passed a copy of the footage to the commander of the Israeli military police investigation unit and called for an immediate military investigation.

“B’Tselem demanded that the involvement of the lieutenant colonel who was holding the detainee is investigated,” it said. “B’Tselem stressed that members of the security forces are obligated to report unlawful acts. It is even more serious if a high-ranking officer participates in such a whitewash.”

Last night, the Israel Defence Force said an investigation had been ordered: “This was a serious incident in stark violation of the IDF’s rules of conduct and safety.”

Nelson Mandela celebrated his 90th birthday Friday by calling on the wealthy to share with the poor and wishing that he had been able to spend more time with his family during the long anti-apartheid struggle.

Mandela was imprisoned for nearly three decades for his fight against apartheid.
