Winston Churchill, the American, graduated from Annapolis in 1894. He wrote at least ten published books and was hugely popular in the early 1900s. Coniston, considered one of the best, concerns New England politics in the nineteenth century. I offer four of his works: The Celebrity, The Crisis, Coniston and Mr. Crewe's Career. They are in Good to Excellent condition with no tears or repairs. Three have names or salutations inside the front cover.

Our president has spent one-third of his entire two terms in office either at Camp David, Maryland, or at Crawford, Texas, on vacation.

Sen. John McCain takes weekends off and limits his campaign events to one a day.

It occurs to me that John McCain is as intellectually shallow as our current president

One after another, McCain's answers were shallow, simplistic, and trite. He showed the same intellectual curiosity that George Bush has -- virtually none.

John McCain graduated 894th in a class of 899 at the Naval Academy at Annapolis.

He no longer allows reporters unfettered access to him aboard the "Straight Talk Express" for a reason. He simply makes too many mistakes.

I am sick and tired of the president of the United States embarrassing me.

George Bush's record as a student, military man, businessman and leader of the free world is one of constant failure.

I fear to the depth of my being that John McCain is just like him.

Cigarette Tax Burnout

In New York City and State, tobacco taxes have been raised so many times that the retail cost can exceed $9 a pack -- about double the national average. Few budget-savvy smokers in the Big Apple pay that tax. Patrick Fleenor, an expert on tobacco taxes at the Tax Foundation, estimates that there is "now a 75% gap between cigarette sales in the city and cigarette consumption." In other words, three out of four cigarettes are bought elsewhere or are contraband.

In New Jersey, about 40% of the Marlboros and Virginia Slims that are lit up escape the $2.57-a-pack tax. In Washington State, evasion was so rampant that the legislature decided in 2005 to lower the 75% tax on cigars and other tobacco products as a way to raise revenue and help state retailers.

Politicians in Annapolis are scratching their heads wondering what happened to all those chain smokers who were supposed to help balance Maryland's budget. Last year the legislature doubled the cigarette tax to $2 a pack to pay for expanded health-care coverage. Eight months later, cigarette sales have plunged 25% and the state is in fiscal distress again.

As House Majority Leader Kumar Barve put it, fewer people smoking is "a good thing." Yes, except that Maryland may be losing retail sales more than smokers. Residents of Maryland's Washington suburbs can shop in nearby Virginia, where the tax is only 30 cents a pack, and save at least $15 per carton.

The Maryland pols are so afraid this is true that they've made it a crime for residents to carry two packs of cigarettes that weren't purchased in the state.

Out-of-state purchases, tax-free Internet sales and a cigarette black market are booming.

Israel mulls new settler enclave in West Bank

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel has proposed building a new Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank near Jerusalem, a spokesman for the main settlers organization said on Monday.

The Defence Ministry, which oversees the issue, made no comment on a move that would be seen by Palestinians and by Israel's U.S. and European allies as a breach of commitments to halt settlement activity on land Palestinians want for a state.

The Palestinians have already accused Israel of bad faith during the nine-month-old, U.S.-sponsored Annapolis peace process for approving the expansion of other settlements, mostly near Jerusalem, and for last month giving the go-ahead for an entirely new settlement in the Jordan Valley.

It's not a given that Republican candidate has the right stuff

Is McCain fit to lead America?

That question hasn't been asked, nor has it been answered.

A careful look at McCain's biography shows that he isn't prepared for the job. His resume is much thinner than most people think.

Like the current occupant of the White House, McCain got his first career breaks from the connections and money of his family, not from hard work.

The son and grandson of Navy admirals, he attended Annapolis where he did poorly. Nevertheless, he was commissioned as a pilot, where he performed poorly, crashing three planes before he failed to evade a North Vietnamese missile that destroyed his plane. McCain spent more than five years in a prison camp.

McCain hasn't accomplished much in the Senate. Even his own campaign doesn't trumpet his successes, probably because the few victories he's had still rankle Republicans.

Around the McCain campaign, they grouse that Obama “hasn’t bled.” He hasn’t bled literally, in military service, just like W., the last holder of an E-ZPass who sped past McCain. And he hasn’t paid his dues in the Senate, since he basically just stopped by for directions to the Oval Office.

McCain could dismiss W. as a lightweight, but he knows Obama’s smart. Obama wrote his own books, while McCain’s were written by Salter. McCain knows he’s the affirmative action scion of admirals who might not have gotten through Annapolis without being a legacy. Obama didn’t even tell Harvard Law School that he was black on his application.

Westfield Annapolis said 14 new retailers and eating establishments will be opening at the mall in the next few months.

New faces at the mall

12 shops and restaurants open up as part of expansion plan

West Coast style clothing, crystal sculptures and a new restaurant featuring American cookout fare are being added to the tenant mix at the Westfield Annapolis mall.

The stores are part of an expansion project heralded by Anne Arundel County officials as a major economic development project adding 60 new stores and a 240,000-square-foot wing that was unveiled last fall.

Sheila Laderberg, a founder of Punk's Backyard Grill who will be a manager at the new flagship restaurant, said Annapolis is a "fantastic market." The opportunity to partner with Westfield for its flagship store also was a deciding factor in the company's lease.

"There was mutual interest," she said.

Ms. Laderberg also said part of the company's concept is centered around its connection to the community.

"Annapolis is a vibrant community it gave us the opportunity where we could make that connection," she said.

Peace Talks Yet Israel Dramatically Expands Settlements

clipper's remarks: Although peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians in the West Bank resumed in Annapolis MD, Israel continues to expands its illegal settlements in the West Bank. It's contrary to the Geneva Convention to transfer part of a conquering nation's population into territories occupied because of a war. Over 200,000 Israeli settlers violate international law every day in the West Bank, yet Israel continues to expand the settlements. If Israel wanted a better way to sabotage the peace process, then it would be hard put to find a better means than expanding the settlements. Yet the present Israeli government claims it has done more to reduce settlements than any other administration. A 90% increase is supposed to be a better record. What a joke.

In the 11 months before the Annapolis summit, Israel sought bids to build fewer than 100 homes in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which Israel took from Jordan in the 1967 Six-Day War, according to Israeli government figures. Since Annapolis, Israel has asked companies to start building more than 1,700 homes, a 1,600 percent increase.

In the first three months of this year, after Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said that he’d rule on all building projects, construction companies started work on nearly 500 new homes in existing West Bank settlements, a 90 percent jump from the first three months of last year.

Olmert aides argue that he has a record of reining in unregulated settlement expansion.

The White House has not said whether President Bush will attend an oil summit, billed as a meeting of major oil producers and consumers to address rising petroleum costs, on June 22 in the Saudi capital, Riyadh. Prime Minister Brown of Britain has said he will attend, and the Saudis are hoping that other high-level Western officials, including Mr. Bush, will follow suit.

Washington has urged oil-rich countries such as Saudi Arabia to pump more oil to increase supply. But Saudi officials say the weak dollar and Israeli hints of an impending military attack on Iran, not declining production, are to blame for high prices.

Some Riyadh watchers trace the shift to a National Intelligence Estimate on Iranian nuclear progress, published in December. The report convinced the Saudis that America was not going stop Iran, a Saudi foe, from obtaining a nuclear weapon, the president of the Jerusalem Policy Center for Public Affairs, Dore Gold, said.

What do you call the person who graduates fifth from the bottom of his class at Annapolis? The Republican Party nominee for President. That's right. Senator John McCain actually graduated 894th out of 899 middies at the Naval Academy. Only five other crew cuts achieved less than John McCain did in his class at Annapolis.
