Lifelike animation heralds new era for computer games

'Emily' will set a new precedent for photo-realistic characters in video games and films, says her creator, Image Metrics

Extraordinarily lifelike characters are to begin appearing in films and computer games thanks to a new type of animation technology.

Emily - the woman in the above animation - was produced using a new modelling technology that enables the most minute details of a facial expression to be captured and recreated.

Researchers at a Californian company which makes computer-generated imagery for Hollywood films started with a video of an employee talking. They then broke down down the facial movements down into dozens of smaller movements, each of which was given a 'control system'.

She is considered to be one of the first animations to have overleapt a long-standing barrier known as 'uncanny valley' - which refers to the perception that animation looks less realistic as it approaches human likeness.

The first collection is a series of audio-reactive ‘video sound sculptures’. Inspired by Synesthesia, the rare, sensory experience of seeing sound or tasting colours, these videos are physical manifestations of sound, sculpted by volume, pitch or structure of the soundtrack.

Olympic Fireworks Faked For TV

Parts of the spectacular Beijing Olympics opening ceremony were faked, it has emerged.

The global television audience of more than three billion people watched in amazement as a series of giant footprints outlined in fireworks proceeded through the night sky from Tiananmen Square to the Bird's Nest stadium - except they were watching a computer animation.

Even the giant television screens within the stadium itself broadcast the fake images.

Stunned viewers thought they were watching the string of fireworks filmed from above by a helicopter.

But in reality they were watching a 3D graphics sequence that took almost a year to produce.

It even included a 'camera shake' to mimic the effect of filming from a helicopter.

The dupe was revealed by China's Beijing Times. Speaking to the paper, the man responsible for the animation said he was pleased with the result.

"But most of the audience thought it was filmed live - so that was mission accomplished."

clipper's remarks: It should have been obvious what the Chinese were looking for in an opening when they hired Steven Spielberg. After he bailed over Darfur (did he ever intend to follow through with the gig in the first place?) the producers stuck with their script and made the best show they could.

So if some CGI shots and some lip-syncing found their way into the spectacle why is anyone surprised?

Don't get mad about the cute girl who can't really sing. Get mad about the the 12-year old gymnasts. The latter have a strict code to follow that is set out by the IOC. The former is just show-biz.

BEIJING -- China's $100-million Olympics opening ceremony wowed its global TV audience with a lavish spectacle and pizazz that tried to present a perfect image of China to the world, right down to the perfect teeth of the little girl who took center-stage and sang an ode to the motherland.

Except the voice was not hers. It was recorded and belonged to another girl, with better pipes but crooked baby teeth and a chubby face.

Nor was all quite what it seemed with the dazzling fireworks sequence watched by a billion or more television viewers. Worried about the difficulty of cameras capturing 29 sequential explosions from Tiananmen Square to the Olympic Village, the Chinese visual effects team re-created all but one of the big bangs in an animation studio, and inserted the 55-second clip into the live TV coverage.

Perfection, it seems, must sometimes be faked.

I have been performing Orbit with nu 3 times now , the first time was for ClubTransmediale in berlin , it was our first time , still beta version with few bugs , but i think the result was quite cool for a first time , you can see a video on vimeo .Then there was the Node08 festival organise per the vvvv group , the festival was taking place in Frankfort in a cheesy club , but it was really great to meet all this vvvv users…
